The thing is, Latin American identity is not something that began a couple years ago because we all think El Chavo del 8 is cool. It is born out of struggle. Conquest, genocide and slavery were the inheritance of the Iberian empires. The independent states had, and still have, to deal with neocolonialism and the remains of the racist elitist structures reinforced by eurocentrism, which are just getting dismantled at a great cost, with many setbacks. The history of Latinoamérica is not pretty. There is racism, there is genocide, slavery, oppression, and imperialism that still continues to this day.

Cinco siglos igual.

This is why the Latin American identity is based not only in shared culture, but a shared historical struggle against oppression. It's not only fiesta and carnaval and stuff, it's not all cultural exchange and utopian harmonious communities living in peace, it's also a shared consciousness of our place in the world, among the oppressed nations, the Third World. This is why people of so many different backgrounds consider themselves, and thus are, Latin American, which is a concept hard to grasp for Usamericans used to separate communities in discrete units, while our main identity as members of our many nations is this, Latin American. Some people identify more strongly with it, others don't, and everybody has different ideas on how to deal with this, but it is a pervasive "ghost" that hangs over our heads. The pain of the open veins, if you want to get all poetic.

So here we stand then, with our common identity shaped by a cycle of violence that continues to this day. The question that remains is: do we choose to continue it out of greed and negligence, or do we choose to join together in struggle to create a fair, just and free society for all of us? When I was a kid (probably 4-6 years old) I had this irrational fear that wrinkles were contagious, and if I was visiting my grandma's house or my aunt & uncle's house and someone who I deemed as "old" used the bathroom before I did, my little kid brain told me I had to wait a bit because if I sat on the toilet right after my butt would get wrinkly like a raisin and I'd fall in.

I used to not understand that the phrase "I saw you in my dreams last night" was intended to be flirtatious... Because the first time someone told me I had been in a dream she had I was crawling on her ceiling. So I just assumed that that was a Common Felix Dream Appearance. Back in 2019 when I started my job, during the first week I broke the lock of a small safe where we used to keep company phones and important documents. I had late shift and the duty to close down that day, there wasn't anyone else around I could tell this to. I didn't know who to call either! Freshly graduated from uni 21 year old Ruby was worried sick and truly on the verge of tears (actually, I was legit crying). I thought I made a huge mistake and everyone's gonna hate me, the things will be stolen, the boss is gonna hate me, I'd be fired, etc. etc. but I had no choice and I just went home 😅

Came to work the next day and found out they had a spare lock anyways. And all doors close automatically during the evening so nobody can break in. Everything was normal and it didn't go as bad as I thought 😅 no big deal! Thinking back on it, it was a silly little incident...

I have LFC in my bio and a player from LFC as my avatar but the actual deciding factor for me in supporting LFC was because people assumed I did so I thought, I guess I do.
