Alright, let's clear this up.

If someone tells you they have a disability, mental or physical, you can not tell them they are faking it unless you know it as a fact. Leave people alone. They are not attention seeking and they don't want pity. But it is not your place to tell anyone that they don't actually have a disability. Don't look down on them, just try to accept.

You mentioned the Joplin tornado so um. Rant time!

The Joplin tornado touched down in the late afternoon, gaining strength as it moved through the city. Within minutes, entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble. The tornado struck St. John’s Regional Medical Center, destroying much of the hospital and forcing medical personnel to evacuate patients under dire circumstances. The local high school and numerous businesses were also obliterated. More than 8,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, leaving thousands homeless and causing over $2.8 billion in damages.

The human cost was staggering. In addition to the 161 lives lost, over 1,100 people were injured. Many residents had only minutes to seek shelter, as the tornado intensified rapidly. The sheer power of the storm left vehicles tossed like toys, trees stripped of their bark, and entire streets unrecognizable.

In the wake of the disaster, emergency responders and volunteers from across the country rushed to Joplin’s aid. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Guard, and countless nonprofit organizations, including the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity, coordinated efforts to provide shelter, medical care, and basic necessities for survivors. Local residents, despite their own hardships, joined in to help their neighbors.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Joplin’s recovery was the overwhelming support from volunteers. People traveled from across the nation to assist with search-and-rescue efforts, clear debris, and help rebuild homes. The phrase “Joplin Strong” became a rallying cry for the city, symbolizing its determination to rise from the wreckage.

Rebuilding Joplin was a massive undertaking, but the city demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to recovery. The Joplin School District worked tirelessly to reopen schools by the next academic year, ensuring that students had a sense of stability despite the surrounding devastation. New housing developments emerged, businesses reopened, and the city gradually regained its footing.

One of the most significant milestones in Joplin’s recovery was the opening of the new Mercy Hospital Joplin in 2015, replacing St. John’s Regional Medical Center, which had been destroyed in the storm. The new hospital was built with reinforced structures designed to withstand future extreme weather events.
