I'd just like to clarify some things about Senator Cory Booker's marathon Senate speech in protest of the present administration and everything they are doing to the American people.
Senator Booker was NOT allowed to sit down, eat, or use the bathroom during his speech. Sitting or leaving the room to use the bathroom would be considered yielding the floor. Eating would have interfered with his speaking and the person who has the senate floor must continue to speak, except when listening to questions that they will then answer.
He only took occasional sips of water.
The person who previously held the record for longest speech on the Senate floor did have bathroom breaks and also did things like read from the encyclopedia.
Senator Booker did not do that. His speech was to point out the damage that this administration is doing and he stayed on that subject.
Senator Booker's speech did reach many people. It wasn't a silly stunt that was done so that he could take the record for longest speech. He wanted to show the country that democrats will do something to bring attention to the problems we are facing. That democrats are listening to them.
Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours and 4 minutes to "make good trouble."
daily affirmations: you are isildur’s heir, not isildur himself. You are not bound to his fate.
I was going to make a "same braincell" joke but honestly reading this over and over again was actually very moving and I might need to go lie down.....maybe the real affirmations were the friends we made along the way etc etc
Well put. (Source: Writing About Writing Facebook page)
as a lawyer who’s been practicing for six years now I can say with certainty that this 100% applies to lawyers
Today's action item:
Call Cory Booker's office and say thank you. If you're not one of his direct constituents, say so and indicate you're calling to show he has national support. Aides and pages are allowed to speak with him and other Senators may receive messages they can pass on via questions, meaning he will find out at some point in proceedings.
Also, you can watch direct from his website:
The NPR article is so so good, just FYI.
If Booker continues to speak a few minutes past the 24-hour mark, his speech will surpass the previous longest-spoken filibuster, set in 1957 by noted segregationist Strom Thurmond, who took the podium at the time to oppose the Civil Rights Act.
Booker is Black.
He beat the record by the way! So suck it Thurmond and Cruz!
The speech has covered a wide range of topics from health care and Social Security to immigration, the economy, public education, free speech and foreign policy. And it included portions of letters that Booker said he had received from affected constituents, as well as public comments from world leaders, in recent weeks.
And he's not doing bs tactics either.
Booker has not yet pulled out the phone book or children's literature to read from, as some of his predecessors have done on the Senate floor. He has stayed focused on the topic of Trump's agenda and how he says it is hurting everyday Americans — weaving together domestic and foreign policy concerns.
Unlike other politicians like Ted Cruz in 2013
Later that year, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took to reading Dr. Seuss’s "Green Eggs and Ham," while holding the floor to oppose former president Obama’s health care law.
At 25 hours and one minute, with basically no voice left, Cory Booker has ceded the floor.
The longest speech in the history of Congress is now one in defense of democracy, checks and balances, and protection for lower-class Americans.
We finally found one, guys, it's a Democrat with a fucking BACKBONE.
I was so thrilled he made it past Thurmond's record. I watched him for awhile very late last night and listened on CSPAN most of the day today while I was working. I went out tonight, but kept checking in on him. I hope he has the best night of sleep of his life tonight.
SAME. When he beat the record I heard someone else at my job go "woo!" and I was like ah, I see I'm not the only one listening.
Was playing FF14 at the time and someone mentioned they were watching him in chat (and so was I-trying to fish and listen).
Senator Booker had a fantastic filibuster. Like I was almost in tears at parts; the man was absolutely speaking from the heart. And he said a lot of things I was thinking, which is also nice.
I actually was in tears.
John Lewis would be proud.
Honest question, because i didn't watch the speech, how do you talk about one topic for 25 hours straight without crying or panicking?
I mean I have a crippling sleep disorder and would never be able to do it, and I just wanted to know if this was like a conventionally possible human feat.
1) he prepared for several weeks, and (for those bitching about how it's "finally" happening, this is why) came with a very large stack of paper. I'm not sure if it was a marathon speech or just notes, but he did have backup. My suspicion is that it was an outline with relevant notes in it, especially because toward the end as he started flagging a few other senators had to nudge him on dates or names he couldn't remember.
2) during a filibuster (or in this case simply a taking of the floor, because he wasn't technically speaking about a single piece of legislation), other senators may provide short breaks for the speaker by asking questions about the topic at hand. During the time I was listening I heard several senators begin their questions with stories from their own districts to provide Booker with a minute or two of reprieve.
3) after a certain point, as fatigue sets in you just kinda pick a focal point and keep gong, and he did indicate one of his friends in the Senate had agreed to be that focal point for him and also (literally) stood in solidarity with him several times during the filibuster. By the time he was done he looked like someone had just dragged him off the beach at Normandy. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't even entirely aware of his audience anymore.
4) he almost definitely ate and drank very well the day beforehand.
5) by the time he was done he was hanging onto that podium like he wanted to marry it.
Actually he ate and drank almost nothing. For a few days. Proper filibuster prep involves dehydration to avoid bathroom problems. He even admitted his doctor will be mad.
I liked when he started just reading letters from his constituents for a bit. That fired him right back up.
Holy hell. I figured he'd eat large in the morning and give it 24 hours for everything to work through.

also like, a Black man breaking Strom Thurmond's record is absolutely *chef's kiss*
for those who are too young to know about Strom, he was literally a white supremacist
Dehumanizing bigots is bad, not because I want to be nice to them, but because they are human beings and they serve as a reminder that anyone is capable of evil ideation and action. Violent bigots are not fundamentally different beings from you. They are human beings, who have developed a reactionary and destructive belief system due to their circumstances combined with their biases. In a different timeline, that could've been you. Anyone can be radicalized. Nobody is immune to propaganda, not even the person reading this.

Wow.
The Assembly of Southern Gaza Clans has issued a powerful call for a popular uprising (Intifada) against Hamas, accusing the group of gambling with Palestinians’ lives for its own narrow, self-serving interests.
Google translation:
Statement issued by the families and clans of the southern governorates - Gaza Strip
Our steadfast people in Gaza, enough is enough, there is no longer room for silence or waiting Years of oppression, starvation and destruction, and now our people are being pushed towards destruction without mercy or responsibility In the name of the clans of Gaza, you are calling for a popular uprising against injustice, and a march of anger that will shake the ground under the feet of those who sold our blood and exploited our suffering for their narrow interests. The people of Gaza have sacrificed the most precious and valuable, and what was the reward? More death, more hunger, more humiliation We will not accept to remain fuel for narrow calculations, and we will not allow this farce to continue Enough playing with our lives and the future of our children! Enough trivializing our suffering! Hamas must lift its hand from Gaza immediately, and end this unjust blockade imposed on us due to decisions that do not represent us. We call on you all to take to the streets and make our voice heard to the world: Gaza is not held hostage by anyone. Gaza will be liberated by the will of its people.
OK, so, Middle Eastern people will already know what I'm going to say, so this is for Westerners : this is huge. Not just because Gazans are calling to kick out Hamas, but because it is a assembly of CLANS.
For Westerners, clans are seen as, in effect, an outdated concept that doesn't really have that much weight, so why care. You'll have some famillies that still hold up their clan structure to a point, like when three or four different branches of the same familly gather at the same place at set dates with some degree of regularity. But overall, the idea of "clans" in the West is seen as something of the past, a piece of folklore.
That is very much not the case in the Arab world. Clans still play a major role, socially AND politically. Clans are a very, very, very important part of someone's social identity. So if the Clans of South Gaza are calling for an Intifada against Hamas, then those clans' fighters will at minima be given an unofficial ultimatum : Hamas or the Clan, quit one.
Will we see flashy consequences on TV ? Most likely not, Hamas is from the same cultural sphere and knows the social rules and context. But it DOES show a loss of faith and trust in Hamas, and also a loss of strength sufficient that the Clans feel comfortable attempting this. So Hamas won't be able to just slam a foot down on that. My point being : this is huge in the Arab cultural context.
Thank you, @lordadmiralfarsight, for this context.
Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now
He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.
For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.
Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.
He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor
Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going
For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.
He has yielded the floor at 25 hrs and 4 mins. His eyes are so wide they look like they’re going to bug out of his skull so I don’t blame him for stopping. He said to go out and get in some good trouble.
To be clear, he didn't actually get to sit down. The rules say you can only keep talking as long as you're standing.
Also, that record he broke? Was held by a man opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1957, which was intended to protect voting rights for Black citizens.
John Lewis was so outraged by what was happening during the civil rights movement that he started donating time as a lawyer pro bono. His work included setting up housing stings to catch real estate agents who were refusing to sell to Black families.
One of the agents he stung was representing a white family, who said "fuck that and fuck you, we'll sell directly to this Black family...."
....and that's the house Cory Booker grew up in.
Strom Thurmond and his ilk pissed off pre-Senator John Lewis so badly that Lewis started doing legal work that would lead to a Black boy living in a mostly-white neighborhood with very good schools and that Black boy would grow up to be a Black man who became a Black Senator who just destroyed Strom Thurmond's famous record speaking in defense of the ordinary people of our nation and let me tell you not only is truth sometimes stranger than fiction, the wheel of justice grinds slow but exceeding fine and it just turned Strom Thurmond to fucking dust.
And he wore a pin in support of getting the Jewish hostages kidnapped by Hamas home. This shouldn't have to be seen as brave, but in the current climate, it is. Thank you Cory Booker.
I'm headed home for the holidays, so I made this very simplified watered down comic to explain why I got top surgery!
It's obviously much more complex than I could fit into words, let alone a little comic, but I hope it resonates with someone! 🏳️⚧️✂️
Happy Trans Day of Visibility!
Here's a comic I made in 2022 about having top surgery! 🏳️⚧️

Addition for those unaware: Cory Booker is black. Strom Thurmond set the previous record about 70 years ago in protest of civil rights. Booker spent much of the time I was watching talking about the importance of working together for the people and the idea that it's not "left versus right but right versus wrong."
The new record speech is on the right side of history.
These pictures are killing me
