“Rayban charity glasses event” is a scam don’t click any link in a post that says that.

Old tumblr users remember this scam back when it first went out.

Also no, this isn’t a joke. This phishing scam is 100% running its course again so watch out for your mutuals long abandoned accounts suddenly posting it. Please make everyone aware of it since most users here are newbies who have not seen it before!

alright everyone is being sassy but nobody has brought up the actual reason why scientists are interested in the titanic in the notes

Per wikipedia:

The Titanic was made of steel, presumably to resist corrosion (i mean. thats why boats are made of steel i assume) but even when iron/steel rusts people did not expect to find like. decomposition. bacteria are EATING the titanic.

and there's wood furniture from the titanic that isn't decaying. hell, there are wood ships at the bottom of the ocean that archaeologists study. so the expectation people have for the titanic is not that the steel would decompose at the bottom of the ocean. Even in 100 years, since there are much more ancient preserved wooden ships iirc.

(im not particularly knowledgeable about ships, i just had heard about the science going on around the titanic so i wanted to clarify that on this post for people)

hi, a lot of you need a perspective reset

  • the average human lifespan globally is 70+ years
  • taking the threshold of adulthood as 18, you are likely to spend at least 52 years as a fully grown adult
  • at the age of 30 you have lived less than one quarter of your adult life (12/52 years)
  • 'middle age' is typically considered to be between 45-65
  • it is extremely common to switch careers, start new relationships, emigrate, go to college for the first or second time, or make other life-changing decisions in middle age
  • it's wild that I even have to spell it out, but older adults (60+) still have social lives and hobbies and interests.
  • you can still date when you get old. you can still fuck. you can still learn new skills, be fashionable, be competitive. you can still gossip, you can still travel, you can still read. you can still transition. you can still come out.
  • young doesn't mean peaked. you're inexperienced in your 20s! you're still learning and practicing! you're developing social skills and muscle memory that will last decades!
  • there are a million things to do in the world, and they don't vanish overnight because an imaginary number gets too big

I seriously can't fucking stand when arrogant and condescending Europeans online that be acting like their shit don't be stinking too within their own countries that be having just as many fucked-up political problems as well.

Especially in terms of Far-Right extremism/Fascism and how some be acting like racism and being horribly shitty towards Black & Brown People are "American issues only."

Like Europe doesn't also have deep-rooted issues with White-Supremacy and White nationalism or has an ongoing history of being xenophobic and bigoted towards specific groups of people.

Be it Jewish people or Romani people or those of African descent and South Asian, etc.

Seriously, some of these White Europeans online are acting like their countries are extremely incapable of being just as racist and prejudiced as America is.

Like racism and bigotry are just "Americans problems."

Them using Signal wasn't stupidity, it was done on purpose to avoid having any official records of their conversations--which is legally required. Avoiding an official record is part of Project 2025 to help them all avoid charges or any protests.

That is the part that needs to get focused on, while also continuing pressuring everyone involved until the issue is unavoidable and again, they back down or admit what they are.

And it needs to get stressed over and over again to Republicans who love the military or are in the military--this will get soldiers killed. This is a breach of National Security and it was done on purpose.

These are deeply evil people but this groupchat o'death was done deliberately because Signal will delete their messages.

Tulsi Gabbard will get US soldiers killed. Drunk-ass Pete Hegseth will get US soldiers killed. J.D. Vance will get US soldiers killed. That person in the chat who was *in Russia* will get US soldiers killed.

Regular soldiers who even slightly might breach operational security are punished, even if it was an accident.

You want everyday Republicans and military personnel to get mad about this? Say that. Say all of that. And remember that it's all to "expand" US (Russian) interests and appear strong in true fascist style.

And every Republican and Democratic Senator who voted to confirm these people should not be forgotten either.

Imagine being so braindead that you think the UK being one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world is a good thing 🤡

wtf are you talking about, they didn't "deplete" the nature of their country, they cultivated their wilderness over centuries into some of the most idyllic pastoral landscapes in the entire world. And they did such a good job of it that the phrase "English countryside" is now synonymous with beauty and serenity and peacefulness. They didn't destroy their country's nature, they became its caretaker, they're right to be proud of it. All you're doing is pretending that the only kind of nature that should count is whatever is completely untouched by human hands.

Not to mention over populated deer destroying what little is left due to a lack of predators, 60 million non-native birds released for sport shooting every year, plus huge amounts of wildlife crime, including large numbers of birds of prey being shot/poisoned.

There is nothing beautiful about a sterile, ecologically damaged landscape that contains nothing but sheep and deer. Don't comment on something you clearly know nothing about. I live in England. I can see first hand just how dire the situation is.

The English will create a wasteland and call it a garden.

I feel like there is a weirdly xenophobic subtext about how much danger even an average American is on an average hike (in more stigmatized areas, such as Africa, you obviously get eaten by a hyena while you are still trying to lace up your boots). Like. The dangerous things I am likely to meet in my area include all four dangerous snakes and a spider that could make me pretty sick. These are fairly easily handled by. Like. Not poking them? Honestly the biggest danger is getting lost. (And weather conditions I suppose.) People who live in different areas will have different safety protocols, but the idea that nature is something that must be at all costs adjusted for human convenience and made safe in order to be "usable" by humans is a really fearful outlook and makes me worry if some of y'all are okay?

😭

Calling scam victims stupid, much like cult members, serves to do nothing but make you feel superior, blame victims for the wrongs done to them, and in turn actually makes you more vulnerable to scams (and cults, and so on). "Look at these people! Morons! I could never be one of them because I am smart, unlike these people who fell for them because they are stupid. It is not about vulnerability and luck, both of which are factors that could affect me, it is all simply a matter of in-born intelligence, which is why I, a better human, don't have to worry about falling for them."

And boom, you have already let your guard down - you would never fall for a scam (or cult, etc.) so you can safely click on that link or read that pamphlet because if it was a scam you'd have identified it as such immediately, because you are smart. You don't need to stop and question. You're too smart. And, really, if they didn't want to get scammed they shouldn't have gone out dressed like that.

We're all potential victims. Every single one of us has been at one point or another been at vulnerable to a scammer, or a pickpocket, or any other number of external force trying to harm you for their own benefit. Blaming the victims feels good but it doesn't help shit in the long run.

My father worked in computer engineering and tech for forty years, is still the person I go to for most standard computer upkeep (despite the whole Boomer/Millennial thing), knows pretty much everything there is to know about internet safety and drilled it all into my brain growing up; and even he got caught on the hop once when a scammer happened to contact him during a very stressful day when he wasn't paying attention. He managed to stop any money from leaving his account, but still months later he admits how embarrassed he is for 'letting' something like that happen. And that's not fair because this wasn't something he did to himself: he just happened to be not paying close attention when someone else decided to be a dickhead.

Genuinely, all it takes is one lucky strike when you happen to be focusing on something else, when you're in a rush, when you're vulnerable, when you're sick, when you're running on autopilot. Sure there are best practices everyone should take into account to protect themselves, but patting yourself on the back for not falling for a scam so far in your life is giving yourself far too much credit for being lucky.

I read recently that criminals doing romance scams (which can be exposed by requesting a video call with one's online suitor; scammers generally aren't anywhere near as attractive as their photos make them out to be and sometimes aren't even the same gender/race/nationality, so they'll do all they can to dodge that request) are now looking into generative AI that would effectively spoof video conversations with targets using the faces and bodies from the photos. This is just once instance of scammers studying anti-scam tactics and working out ever-newer ways to circumvent them. Tactics that work now might not work next year.

The year is 2040. My wife of nine years reveals herself to be a sophisticated bot net run out of a sever farm in Tennessee but I don't care, I still love her.
