Welcome to Mythic Mayhem, a webtoon where the wise wizard Gwydion and the mischievous dragon Goch take on fantastical tales of mythical creatures near and far. Wishing to help bring to light the lesser known myths and magic of yesteryear.

I think it’s incredibly fucked how capitalism discourages learning for learning’s sake. People will have interests they’ve spent years researching then say it’s “useless knowledge” bc it didn’t go towards a college degree and isn’t part of their job. Learning is never useless! Your brain is growing and developing throughout your whole life! People would never have epiphanies or sudden lightening strikes of creativity if they weren’t learning new things! That goes double for topics like science, politics, and history, which inform your understanding of the world you live in!

Probally not canon I'm just messing around - trying to design what the pear-shaped cartoon dragon archetype would look like in Dracones Mundi then went wild with the colours.

This dragon would be related to the firedrakes, but ?herbivorous?, nibbling at vegetation with it's beak and letting it ferment/digest in it's round belly. In my mind it's similar to ground sloths and Therizinosaurus.

I probably won't include this dragon in Dracones Mundi, I don't think it fits folklore as well as my firedrakes. It does fit modern pop culture, which is a sort of folklore, but I already have too many pop culture dragons.

...I could add this to the roster of extinct dragons (and say "oh we don't know what colour they were" and use it as an excuse for more purple monstrosities, along with any other fun colour schemes I come up with). If this dragon makes it into the final Dracones Mundi project it'll probably be a brief mention.

absolute bird of a creature

he does look fun to draw

The Picts were actually Really Really Good at engraving fish. And dogs. And birds. And cattle. Which makes the Pictish Beast all the more delightful. I’ve seen it be referred to as the Pictish dragon and the Pictish elephant but I don’t think it’s supposed to be those things either. It’s just a whimsical critter fr.

Sometimes an art meme is an art meme

nah, THIS is a Pictish boar. put some respect on the Pictish boar.

Happy Dracones Monday! The Makara

Happy Dracones Monday! Today's Dracones Mundi dragon is the makara, based on the makara of South Asian folklore, a beast of both land and water ridden upon by deities.

I am not certain on this design but I think it is cute, so I am keeping it for now!

Nordic Monsters - Folklore monsters and other creatures from Finland, Lapland and Karelia is now available! Contains 50+ monsters, eyewitness testimonials, folklore stories and old spells. Much of the book's information is available for the first time ever in English.

drawing a dragon is a high stakes operation that nets you the exact same pedantic comments as dinosaur art but for a totally made up animal

Tagging my dragon mutuals on this one (you know who you are)

It's been 6 years in a back burner but finally I will put this ebook together. It has 55 monsters and creatures, old spells and eye-witness testimonies. Available soon in Ko-Fi and vie email orders!

No way it is a seriously made study book but just to give some information of these Nordic creatures in English, also in cases where such information doesn't exist in English yet. So don't shoot me!

I'm almost done! I'll drop this next week.

No need to worry! The book will be just 5 euro (5.50$ or £4). Anyone wishing to pay more or tip me will have an option to do so.

I don't want to keep the price high because I wish many people to be able to obtain this book.

Some other resources that might be worth checking out (not strictly about faeries but related):

The Corpus of Electronic Texts, or CELT, a collection of Irish cultural materials. This includes English translations of Irish myths.

Mary Jones - similar to CELT, and a resource we used for translations in the Irish mythology class I took in undergrad.

An Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katherine Mary Briggs, a British folklorist.

The Folklore of Cornwall by Ronald M. James. Unfortunately this book is harder to access and is often only in university libraries, but if you're interested in piskies it's a potentially very helpful read.

British Goblins by Wirt Sikes is THE encyclopedia of Welsh faerie mythology

The Fantasy Book Club

Gods and monsters, dragons and magic… It’s just fiction, right? Antisocial student librarian Fiona isn’t convinced that’s true. Turns out, belief in magic is all it takes to make you a target, but believing in others is the only way to survive.

My supernatural drama webcomic features LGBT+ books nerds in peril, monsters, magic, and one very grumpy librarian turned dragon-girl. Over 100 episodes and going weekly episodes for over 3 years!
