Coming out of my cave and... oh wow, it's bright

Call me Phil (she/her). This blog consists of whatever random crap I find amusing, including various fandoms. Anyone can follow me (except porn bots, blocked on sight), but some of you might not like what you read, and you'll be blocked if you're an asshole about it.

They De-Tumblrized Ms. Frizzle

@transfagsculine

why would you leave this in the tags lmao

Allow me to explain:

Everyone dropping this pic

And talking about how the new frizz her is her niece, allow me to do a direct side by side instead

These are STILL not the same woman. Where is the icon fashion, the earrings (the chameleon, which might be in the new show idk I haven't watched it), the prominent hooked nose, the broader shoulders, the volume to her hair, the LIFE IN HER EYES

This frizzle looks like she's been called into the school board for inappropriate behavior and dress one too many times and has been broken.

Also others have said it before me but I couldn't find it in the scroll backs but they whitewashed all the kids too. They same face syndromed everyone to either be easier to draw or be more ambiguous so as not to offend or both or something, and it just makes me sad

Fuck it I did the digging cause I'm still mad

And that’s not even to mention what they did to the bus itself.

The old bus had a personality and life and fun and now it’s just… a bus.

HOW DO Y’ALL WHITEWASH A BUS?!

It's gives "anti abortion Jehova's Witness cartoon" now

This, I find, is an excellent example of how “aesthetic cleanliness” usually just means making something less interesting. Taking the bus and Frizz’s dresses as a relatively unproblematic, but very stupid, example first. What the showrunners have done here is seen the visuals of the original show and tried to declutter them for the tastes of modern audiences. The issue is that the taste they’re catering to is that of parents because they are generally choosing what children watch, and those parents don’t like clutter, and they see all of those fun shapes and colors as visual noise. YouTuber Tantacrul has a great video on how this effects children in music education. In short it’s why no children’s music toys have the capabilities for experimentation that normal instruments do, parents can’t stand “inharmonious sounds”

The much bigger problem here comes when this design philosophy bleeds into the character designs. What they’ve tried to do is make the show easier to look at by smoothing everything out making it all look a little more “cohesive.” Problem is that when you homogenize everything you, well… homogenize everything. Skin tones are lightened, curls are straightened, Noses are smoothed, fat kids are made skinny, it all becomes less diverse and less interesting. It paints a picture of an executive who thinks that people of color and other marginalized people won’t sell, their version of the magic school bus will be much neater, much more fitting to show our kids.

TL;DR:

Problem a) they tried to declutter the visuals to cater to modern parents who like “clean aesthetics,” without considering what will be fun for kids to watch

Problem b) in doing so they whitewashed the character designs and send the deeply insidious message that certain people don’t fit the desired aesthetic and are thus, not fit to be represented in kids tv

Brutally I suspect it's also because the 'cleaner' visuals are less detailed and therefore take less time to animate and are therefore cheaper to produce

Why pay an already overworked animator for ten hours of actually good content when you can pay them for five hours of 'modernised' (read: shittier) content?

ok so these new tariffs are likely going to be primarily affecting red states. i want y’all to ignore the urge to respond by saying the people in those red states deserve it because of the political representation we have. not because some of us are progressives but because this is an opportunity. if conservatives from these states start complaining about higher prices and financial strain, do not respond with “well you voted for this!” this is your opportunity to pull them to the center. say “wow that is really awful. i’m sure this isn’t what you wanted when you voted last year. you deserve representatives that will have your best interests at heart, you should let them know how upset you are! you deserve to be heard!”

because listen to me. republican politicians don’t give a shit about what progressives in red states have to say. they aren’t gonna change their voting trends for us. but if a bunch of small town conservatives start to get restless and angry with their politicians, if they lose support from their most important demographics, that has a shot at changing things. so swallow your pride and disgust and have a conversation with that republican truck driver instead of taking the pot shot that’ll get you 10 minutes of dopamine. do the hard work.

Time to roll this image out for the conservatives for once.

Make them mad that they've been made fools of, because that right there is an out. A lot of them are going to dig their heels in because if they admit that they were making shit choices then what have they been doing all this time? The sunk-cost fallacy wouldn't allow it.

But! What if they were flat out lied to? There's the excuse to back out! They didn't sign up for this, didn't know that they were voting for a liar (🙃 I know. I KNOWWW). But aren't they pissed now? At the guy who fucking SCAMMED them out of their vote?

yup. the republican party’s big pull is that they’re very good at pointing the finger at xyz minority group to blame them for the country’s ills. people like to know who to blame. conservatives especially like to know who to blame because very often they are not educated enough to understand what the actual problems are, because conservative politicians do not prioritize education.

so with the trump administration doing such a phenomenally horrible job at everything, now is the time to give those conservatives a group to blame. gas prices skyrocketing? trump isn’t following through on his promise to lower gas prices and i’m pretty sure those tariffs he imposed are why! groceries getting way too expensive? trump promised to make them cheaper but he’s doing the opposite!

if their options are imploding with embarrassment and having their entire worldview fall apart or ignoring reality, they’ll choose ignoring reality. if they have a third option of getting mad and blaming someone, that is the one they have been trained to choose. use that.

Guys. This works.

I live in the fucking Bible Belt. This place is so atrociously red that I am the weirdest person that most of the people I know have ever met.

I’m not even the weirdest person I’ve ever met. But we are few and far between.

And I’m telling you, they are angry about the same exact things we are. They just have a different narrative.

Now, FINALLY, we are coming to a point where there won’t be anyone else to blame properly EXCEPT the people in power.

And nothing, NOTHING, makes these guys listen closer than when you point out it was their special guy who did this to begin with and doesn’t that make you angry? This fucker lied to us!

Us. Not you. Us.

Because they did lie to us even if some of us didn’t buy it.

Make it us, the truck driver and the other guy next to him in the Kroger, against the evil dip shits in power.

That’s how they work.

Make them identify with YOU.

You may look different and like weird books instead of football and have a rainbow pin, but you’re here, in their community, dealing with the same grocery prices.

Make them see that.

And then point them in the right direction.

“Fucked up that the (insert policy) seems to be backfiring. I feel lied too. You?”

ON WISCONSIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what I mean by right wingers being the MOST out-of-touch!!!! Journalists who interviewed Wisconsin voters are saying that voters for both candidates were really turned-off by Musk's role in the race, and that they thought it was clear he was trying to buy their election. Musk and DOGE are getting booed in town halls in deep, deep red districts. These Republican Party officials are failing to listen to their own voters, not even just Democrats or swing voters, when they say these things. The only way you'd fail to recognize that Musk is unpopular throughout the American populace and its political spectrum is if you're in a far-right echo chamber, probably online. If you're just straight-up not leaving the house to get your impressions of how people vote.

There’s a post about how we need more female characters who genuinely care about people but are really bad at caregiving, and honestly that fits Kira Nerys really well. I’m thinking of Starship Down where she’s tasked with looking after Sisko and keeping him conscious when he has a head injury, and she just starts visibly flailing despite making an effort to hold it together. “Listen up…. because there’s going to be a test later” and then trying to keep him alert by droning on about duty rosters because she gets Task-Oriented when things are in dire straits and does not know how to scale things to a more personal level with someone she has a working relationship with.

Like, so much of how she deals with emotionally fraught situations is by getting up and doing something about them (even so far as traveling back in time) or just keeping busy to avoid dwelling on the matter at hand. When her father was dying, her response was to go out and kill some Cardassians about it, and then order another attack upon his death, rather than sit by his bedside. When Bareil died (pre-resurrection via mad scientist noodling) she went right back to work despite Bashir telling her she didn’t have to. It is a trauma mindset from someone who witnessed a lot of death and suffering and had no choice but to pick up and keep moving and keep fighting. And when she has to sit down and really focus on someone else’s vulnerability, it’s very uncomfortable for her. She cares very deeply about the people around her but she’s clumsy about it.

I don't mean any of this in a weird way but if we're interested in breaking down binaries, we can't cling onto the binary of cis versus trans. If gender expectations are as constrictive as we say they are, then this imagined class of people who are okay with gender expectations 100% of the time with no complications is just that. Imagined. It's similar to "neurotypical" as an imagined class of people who are completely comfortable with the social and mental expectations of their jobs and would never understand what it's like to get overwhelmed or feel out of place. The unintended implication is an obsession with labelling and pathologizing that says that it's not gender or workplace norms that need to be interrogated, it's you.

The truth is that you can be outside the binary without formally committing to calling yourself nonbinary. I am a cis gay man who feels most comfortable and affirmed when I'm free to wear earrings and garments I bought in the "women's" section. I tell people my pronouns are he/him because it's the simplest explanation, but they/them and even she/her are comfortable, even validating, in the right circumstances. There are a lot of cis gay men just like me. Am I actually nonbinary and just in denial? No. Being a gay man is deeply meaningful to me. Am I encouraging nonbinary to start calling themselves cis and questioning whether they're actually nonbinary? No, and I feel more comfortable in my own manhood knowing I have the option to leave. I just want us all to define ourselves on our own terms. I want celebrate common ground and shared queerness with trans people and not have to overstate our differences. We treat it as a political and moral obligation to fine tune our labels for the sake of establishing who's allowed to say what, who's allowed to relate to who, and I have to ask: Are we committed to breaking down boundaries or not?

Scan of signed painting, here is the original.  I can’t thank both of them enough for indulging me and being so sweet, even if Sid had to do it by insinuating at me and Andy talked about ‘balance’ and made me babble at him like a giant nerd.   They were both so lovely and now I get to be a dork and frame my own art because this piece of paper is my new favorite thing.

Sony Pictures Classics will release a filmed version of Broadway’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” a Tony-winning production starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez.

SPC, which acquired worldwide rights to the movie, hasn’t announced theatrical release plans.

This adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical became a critical and commercial smash, recouping its $12 million investment in addition to winning several Tonys including best musical revival and acting awards for Groff and Radcliffe. It’s a sharp contrast to the reception of the original 1981 production, an infamous flop that was panned and closed after a short stint of 16 performances and 44 previews.

Told in reverse chronology over decades, “Merrily We Roll Along” follows the relationship between three lifelong friends — composer Franklin Shepard (Groff), writer Mary Flynn (Mendez) and playwright Charley Kringas (Radcliffe). The show features Sondheim classics like “Old Friends” and “Franklin Shepard Inc.” Maria Friedman, who helmed the stage show and was praised for finding a way to deftly crack the show’s intricate narrative structure, also directed the cinematic version.

“Sony Pictures Classics is the perfect home for our film. From the very beginning, they felt what we felt — that ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ is, at its core, a universal story about friendship: how it changes, how it lasts, and how it shapes who we become,” Friedman said in a statement. “This isn’t just a stage production captured on film — it’s something more intimate.”

“Merrily We Roll Along” joins a slew of Broadway productions, like “Hamilton,” “Come From Away” and “Waitress,” that have been preserved on film and distributed by companies such as Disney+, Apple TV+ and Bleecker Street. Meanwhile, a separate feature film adaptation of “Merrily We Roll Along” is in the works with director Richard Linklater and Paul Mescal as Franklin Shepard, Ben Platt as Charley Kringas and Beanie Feldstein as Mary Flynn.

“’Merrily We Roll Along’ is unlike anything we’ve seen before,” Sony Pictures Classics said in a statement. “With precise editing and a knowing camera that moves from closeup to sweeping gesture, Maria Friedman not only establishes herself as a formidable filmmaker but she more than preserves the seminal performances of Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez in creating with them an even greater goosebump experience for the audience than ever.”

Oh, what did I lose a follower for this time -- posting about Hamas torturing and killing a leader of protests against them, or about a hostage testifying that Hamas tortured and sexually assaulted female hostages in front of him? Can't stand to read about what your plucky revolutionary Leftist heroes get up to?

Holy shit, I just lost two more. Guess that touched a nerve with some people, huh?
