I’m reading that new memoir about working at Facebook,”Careless People,” and it’s just fucking insane.

At one point Facebook wanted to be an international hub for organ donation. The “Lean In” lady asked why she couldn’t go down to Mexico and buy a kidney if her four year old needs one. This is literally on p.57. What the fuck else is going to be in this book if that is on page 57

Facebook also had to have protocols for armed raids of its foreign offices because they violated so many laws or failed to pay taxes or comply with other official protocols!! How is this a company that still exists!!!

“Doing jail time in a foreign country is not a reasonable ask from your bosses” — legitimately an argument the author’s husband had to have with her!!

Is this what gilded age readers felt like when they read Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle”???

Though strangely nothing Mark Zuckerberg does is worse than Sheryl Sandburg, who comes across as an unhinged hypocrite who uses her uncontrollable anger issues to cultivate a reign of terror, I am just… baffled and appalled at how much Zuckerberg does not care about the world outside of Silicon Valley. There have already been two instances of him trying to wear a hoodie to state visits, and not in a Zelenskyy protest way. He just doesn’t like clothes that are not hoodies.

Wow they just abandoned a team member in the middle of an out of control crowd in Indonesia! Horrible company!

Guess who Mark Zuckerberg thinks is the best president of all time?

Hint: it’s Andrew Jackson!

Another mind-boggling line: “I think the point at which you have to explain Nuremberg to the head of the team leading your China entry is probably a red flag.”

Real exchange that happened between book author and the head of the DC office:

This conference room detail seems like too much for satire. But it isn’t!

This book has gotten so insane I can’t even summarize anymore. I can only post photos of this moment where Sheryl Sandberg wears her pajamas on a private jet and tries to make her heavily pregnant employee cuddle in bed with her on a flight back to California from Davos, Switzerland.

Following this, we discover that Sheryl says, “you should have gotten in the bed,” and ices out the narrator. Sheryl also has her assistant Sadie buy $10k of lingerie for her, and $3k of lingerie for herself, after which Sadie has to go to her house to model the lingerie and stay overnight. What the actual fuck.

Woooow FB knew the whole time that Trump was using trolls and spreading disinformation before the 2016 election but because they were making so much money off of it, they were just fine with it. They completely ignored the author pointing out how Duterte had done the same thing.

Direct quote on p 251: “Outrage is a lucrative business for Facebook right now, a month before the election….”

Jaw-dropping.

Guess who lied to Congress about how the Chinese Communist Party would apply its laws and regulations to Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg!

A lot of this later stuff about Facebook’s attempts to get into China are going a little over my head but I can see why Meta was trying to discredit the book and shut down reviews. She’s whistleblowing violations of US AND international laws. I doubt they’ll see consequences under Trump but YIKES

“By now it feels like the day-to-day at Facebook is lurching from one dismaying shit show to the next.”

SEEMS ACCURATE

This is so evil!!!

I don’t even know how to summarize the particularly heinous things that happened with Facebook in Myanmar and I’d have to take photos of the whole chapter to select bits but BASICALLY

-thanks to a telecoms deal Facebook came preloaded on a lot of mobile phones and often time on FB didn’t count towards your minutes so to many in Myanmar Facebook WAS the internet

-nonetheless FB was not optimized for Burmese, Myanmar was not renders on Unicode, and the terms of service were translated extremely late and passed out on paper flyers instead of posted anywhere. FB in Myanmar had little to no oversight and there was only one contractor in Dublin monitoring hate speech in Burmese even when there were LITERAL RIOTS caused by misinformation posted on Burmese FB

-Myanmar was not a priority for FB leadership so after LITERAL RIOTS they only hired one other contractor who seemed to remove posts from peace activists rather than hate speech or posts calling for violence

-due to what seems like internal politicking against the author, the person she tries to hire to be in charge of Myanmar in the right time zonenever gets hired

-FB higher ups were warned in advance of huge misinformation efforts like troll accounts and takeovers of fan accounts for pop stars but did nothing, leading pretty much directly to what the UN calls genocide and crimes against humanity

Why did it all happen? The author’s conclusion: higher ups “didn’t give a fuck.”

Wow and after all that they fired the author for reporting sexual harassment from her Bush-trained, Trump insider boss

Holy shit was this a harrowing read. These insanely rich people have so much money they are insulated from the consequences of any and all actions and don’t care what countries they smash as long as they can pull money from the wreckage

By the way... Zuckerberg doesn't want you to have the option to read this book.

If you can you should get it.

I just finished this book and it's really that bad. the author nearly dies from an amniotic embolism during childbirth and spends the next months of maternity leave bleeding profusely to the point she needed 35 total blood infusions and could barely survive day to day

Facebook still makes her work the entire time she is on maternity leave and suffering from these health issues, and they offer to chip in for a couple weeks of hiring a nanny for her new baby in order to guilt her into working even more.

She still has weekly check ins with her boss in which he lays down in bed and takes the video call from his cell phone, and asks her "where are you bleeding from" multiple times and asks her to describe in detail the process of breast feeding, despite numerous instances of pushback.

When she returns from maternity leave, her first week back her boss pulls her into a performance review where she is given poor marks for not being more available while on maternity leave.

She was then fired for seeking advice on how to handle this boss, despite a verbal agreement that she would not be fired if she dropped her plan of submitting any formal complaints, which she complied with. He is still an executive at facebook to this day

I know this is going to make me sound pretensions but I have to get it off my chest. I feel an unimaginable rage when someone posts a photo and is like "this picture looks like a renaissance painting lol" when the photo clearly has the lighting, colors and composition of a baroque or romantic painting. There are differences in these styles and those differences are important and labeling every "classical" looking painting as renaissance is annoying and upsetting to me. And anytime I come across one of those posts I have to put down my phone and go take a walk because they make me so mad

In case you're curious here's what I mean.

Renaissance(distinct lines, stability and the individual man):

Baroque (bold, chaotic, dramatic):

Romantic(romanticize the simple hard working life):

Do you see the difference?

this post has re-wired my brain in the best way

Hey i’m a fashion design student so i have tons and tons of pdfs and docs with basic sewing techniques, pattern how-tos, and resources for fabric and trims. I’ve compiled it all into a shareable folder for anyone who wants to look into sewing and making their own clothing. I’ll be adding to this folder whenever i come across new resources

Updated just now with new hand sewing resources (mainly buttonholes) and textbook pdfs on fashion history, fashion illustration, and thinking through designs!

OP I owe you my life

OP you are the greatest person currently in my life. You beautiful, thoughtful creature.

so much care put into housing this aging spider. why are my eyes wet

Alien Scientist: No, you don’t understand. Humans will pack bond with anything.

If you are trying to overcome a fear of spiders I can’t recommend this TikTok enough. They never post jump scares and always put warnings if a spider moves fast in a video. All of the videos are super cute and portray the spiders in a very positive and non threatening manner. 11/10 would recommend.

products are so bad now that i have to do approximately 8 hours of research before i buy anything

Seriously, if you're planning to spend a coupla hundred bucks on an appliance, or thousands for a car, spend $4 for a month of Consumer Reports (consumerreports.org).

They're a not-for-profit consumers union, dedicated to fair and honest reviews of everything people buy. Totally worth the membership.

And yeah, if money is tight you can join for a month then cancel the membership easily when you're done with your research.

Also check to see if your local public library has a subscription, either in print or digital format (might be listed as a database rather than a magazine - that's the case at my library in Canada).

Most libraries will provide access to CR, either in print or digital format. The digital archives are what you want when researching a specific product, since they cover different areas each issue.

Triple confirming that there is most likely a public library near you that either provides access to the print or digital (sometimes both) format of Consumer Reports. Please ask your librarian if they have it because sometimes we can’t leave periodicals out unattended.

HOW AM I JUST NOW LEARNING that there's a 90s cartoon about a crossdressing vigilante hunting down zombies who looks like THIS:

with the goons in question being led by a little kid who uses 'YOU FOOLS' in every other sentence named JOSE VON REICHTER.

JOSE

VON

GODDAMN

REICHTER

who looks like THIS:

AND the animation of FLIPPIN' Trigger!?

Was ANYONE going to tell me??

dont put the name of the show in the post or anything helpeful tho

Doing some digging and it's called Cybersix, based on an Argentinian comic book but created in English, never fully aired in the US and I think was censored there, but all 13 eps were shown in Canada. It's apparently on Hulu atm but I have no idea in what form

HTH :D

the entire show is up for free on TMS' youtube channel

Also it was not animated by Trigger. Trigger didn't exist yet. It was animated by TMS who famously did the animation for several early 90s cartoons like Animaniacs and Batman the Animated Series. As well as local anime like Lupin the third, Dr. Stone, and Fruits Basket. They also work in Collaboration shows like Cybersix and the 1990s Moomin show.

Studio Trigger was formed in 2011 by former Gainax studio members.

Also yes, this show WILL give you Gender envy

This is so 90’s that it actually hurts omfg.

Harry Meets World, the feel-good sitcom spinoff. He’s just a kid that has to learn to navigate the ups and downs of high school and young love while also dealing with his charmingly quirky family made up of military vets, ex-cons and the always-overbearing Uncle Tuvok.

Oh shit this commentary is so good I have to reblog this again.

If anyones interested in learning about the first black vampire short story, published in 1819, heres a link to the wiki, its called The Black Vampyre, and its about a former slave turned vampire who seeks revenge on his slave master. Its actually a first in many categories!

you can read the story itself here

Not only is it the first Black vampire story, it's the first comedic vampire story, the first story to include a mixed race vampire, the first vampire story by an American author, and probably the first anti-slavery short story. Some scholars believe that the text was written in response to John William Polidori's The Vampyre.

I have read it, in fact! I even doodled the titular character just for fun:

If anyone was wondering, Duolingo just got even worse.

Duolingo was already on a downward spiral for years. I discovered it in 2015 and it was an incredible tool and I used it for a few years but then I started to notice a decline. It got worse and worse in a lot of ways.

I actually ended up having a surreal and jarring one-on-one conversation with Luis von Ahn, the founder and CEO, who reached out to me after a scathing critique I posted on Reddit started to get significant traction.

Talking to him was like talking to someone who had been brainwashed by a cult. I told him how I and others in my life had found Duolingo so useful and efficient for language learning, and that its usefulness was evidenced by me noticing a real-world improvement in ability to listen to, understand, and speak the languages I had been practicing, but that recent changes had made it dramatically less useful to where I needed to put much more time in to get the same amount out.

His response was like "But all our metrics are up, our data shows that our changes are working." It was so frustrating. The metrics were all about engagement. He was showing people were spending more time practicing languages, not that they were getting more real-world ability to converse in those languages. Practice time was going up but actual language ability was going down. I tried explaining that to him but he seemed completely unable and/or unwilling to understand my point.

It was like talking to a wall.

I left the conversation with any remaining faith in the Duolingo leadership completely shattered, and I completely withdrew from using the site.

I now use Clozemaster to learn languages in place of Duolingo, and I think it is far superior it terms of efficiency, especially when combined with listening to material produced by native speakers.

If you're looking for alternatives to Duolingo, here are some options that I'm aware of (and none of them are Babbel. Don't use Babbel):

  • Busuu - Busuu is what I used while studying Chinese and Japanese, and the app is comparable to Duolingo.
  • MangoLanguages - Many library systems are offering access to this to free! Make sure to check to see if your library card gives you access to this resource.
  • Great Courses Plus - They also have a ton of language material, and are often offered through libraries!
  • Linkedin Learning - Multiple language (and other!) options, also available through many public libraries.
  • Anki - Gives you access to thousands of flashcards and the ability to make your own.
  • Pimsleur - Pimsleur is one of the most highly recommended language programs, especially if you're working for a conversational level.

Other alternatives to consider are Youtube, often a great place for smaller schools and creators to post content. I supplement my classes with Easy German, and I used to be pretty reliant on EveryDay Chinese to practice my tones. If you're looking to learn it, there's bound to be a channel out there that is tailored toward your language learning.

A second resource to look into is textbooks with app learning. MaGraw Hill, for example, has a free app with practice material for the books you purchase. My German textbook is published by Hueber, and they also have an app. When you're looking to self study, it's definitely worth seeing if there's a textbook to work out of that has built-in app support.
