I know that household bleach and hair bleach are very different beasts, but it's still weird to be doing the "bleach completely dissolves protein fibers" fabric identification test and remember that I apply a bleaching agent to the protein fibers on my head, like, recreationally.

Listen, folks, I also hate generative AI and do not think it is an effective accomodation, but if your argument against it is "Oh, you think [task] is hard? What a stupid idiot baby!" then I'm sorry to say that is Literally Just Ableism. Please think about what you are saying. The point should be that it doesn't actually work to solve the problems that people are struggling with, not that they're wrong for struggling in the first place.

my main takeaway from that post is that the "asexuals should be put in meat grinders" crowd didn't actually go away they just got quieter

it really is crazy how hearing the word "aphobia" makes the compassion just immediately drain out of people like a plug got pulled in the soles of their feet. ace people can talk about our experiences with ostracisation and medicalisation and corrective rape and abusive relationships and assault and conversion therapy and familial rejection and societal pressure and self-hatred and loneliness and erasure and lack of representation, and everyone agrees that those things are bad. but the second the word "aphobia" is mentioned people are instantly just falling over themselves in their desperation to Commit To The Bit

back again encouraging people to start using the hobby stuff they've been acquiring for years

reasons to start can include:

  • the hobby industry wants only for us to keep buying and never use, so using the stuff pushes back
  • some hobby items do not survive long term storage
  • if there's some craft or hobby thing that you want to do but feel your skills aren't up to, consider that those skills won't improve if you don't practice on other things
  • using it allows it to move from the hobby hoard to the [whatever you made it into] hoard, where you may be more likely to enjoy it more often than just when you specifically look at the hobby hoard
  • making things is good for the brain

curious to see what other reasons people might add

Me trying to persuade myself to use the foamboard I've been "saving for a special occasion" 😅

I wouldn't be encouraging people to use the hobby stuff they've been acquiring for years if I hadn't personally started using the hobby stuff I've been acquiring for years, and found out it felt pretty good, actually XD

So, I know exactly how it feels to be saving that thing for something special

and also how--for me--it normally ends up feeling pretty special to use it at all

Not always, though! there will inevitably be hobby projects that don't go the way you expected. I have learned (and am still learning) to acknowledge that nothing's perfect and mistakes happen and then move on to the next project.

While it's true that you can never mess up a project if you never do it, that also keeps you from making the things you end up having fun with and loving, doesn't it?

Trans visibility has gotten scarier for years now, and the trans people celebrating today are extraordinary. I love every single one of my trans siblings, including the ones who don't want to be visible today or can't be. Stay safe, and don't let them take your pride away from you.

learned it was trans day of visibility so. behold. this post is visible

comic transcript:
