I’m going to hide some ducks today.

I’m not sure how many I’ll actually hide, but I’ll have to leave one with the Terry Pratchett books when I go to the library.

If someone sees me it’d probably be one of the two people I’m going with, so they’d know me well enough to know that they could either ask again or decide it’s easier to leave it at that rather than try to understand my answer.

I don't see enough people mourning over the slow death of physical media. And I don't just mean TV shows, video games, or movies--which don't even get me started about how we don't really 'own' anything anymore. It includes notes, journals, and letters to one another...so much of our history is lost when we lose a password, a website goes down, a file/hardware is corrupted, or a platform disappears. History that doesn't seem important until you no longer have access to it. Physical media does a lot for memory recall. How many memories will we lose because we don't have something tangible to tie it back to? Something to hold in our hands and stir up those memories we thought were once lost? Sometimes I wonder what the difference between burning a book and losing access to physical media is when someone can pull the plug and remove your access so easily.

Just a fun reminder from one of my heroes. "There has never been a time when the people who've banned books were the good guys."

She's also publicly stated that she believes that anyone who reads her books or watches her shows and films does so because they explicitly agree with her political views.

There's no "agree to disagree" with her work. Every time you pick up her work or talk about it you are saying to her "I agree with you Joanne" whether you like it or not.

Just because Rowling thinks that doesn't make it true.

The 10-year-olds at the school I work at aren't transphobes, they're kids reading a classic children's series who have no idea about her views.

English majors reading her books for a children's literature course aren't transphobes for reading an assigned work.

Context matters, and this kind of black-and-white thinking is dangerous and wrong.

Rowling doesn't get to determine what other people believe.

If you think she has that right you're as delusional as she is.

One of my favorite historical tidbits is that Arab traders, for centuries, fooled Europeans into thinking cinnamon came from a rare, vicious and fearsome cinnamon bird.

The belief was so prevalent, in fact, that the mythical cinnamon bird shows up in the writings of Herodotus and Aristotle, all the way into medieval European manuscripts where it’s illustrated in all its fierce, cinnamony glory:

Pliny the Elder expressed skepticism of the bird in his writings, rightly assuming that it was a tale invented to keep control on the trade and prices by reducing competition, but the belief was already so widespread that it persisted in many areas into the early 1300’s.

When I was in the hospital, they gave me a big bracelet that said ALLERGY, but like. I'm allergic to bees. Were they going to prescribe me bees in there.

So there's a medication called hyaluronidase. It's used to make other medications absorb better, because it makes the cell wall more permeable.

One common usage is to make local anesthetic more effective during surgery, for instance. It's used in a number of injected medications.

Bee stings contain an enzyme very similar to this medication, so sometimes, people with bee allergies have an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase.

This is called cross-reactivity, where your body mistakes something for the thing it's actually allergic to, and has an allergic reaction anyway. For instance, sometimes people with latex allergies also are allergic to bananas and other fruits. They don't actually contain latex, but there are some similar proteins.

Apparently, hyraluronidase used in humans is derived from one of four sources: sheep testicles, cow testicles, cow testicles again, and GMO hamster ovaries.

tl;dr: They won't inject you with bees, but they might inject you with purified cow testicle juice, and your body might say 'eh, cow balls are BASICALLY bees' and try to kill you anyway.

The world is full of such beauty and wonder. Thank you for that sentence.

@theshitpostcalligrapher how do you feel about

Your body might say 'eh, cow balls are basically bees' and try to kill you anyway.

oh right this was the context post for this one

i fucking love the trope of like. apocalyptic event occurs and takes out the majority of humans, but certain disabilities made ppl immune to the main mechanism of apocalypse (ex: blind ppl in birdbox being unable to see the thing that drives u insane). its so good everytime. i love apocalypse fiction centering on rhe disabled its always so much more interesting than the ableism driven idea that all disabled ppl would instantly die in the apocalypse bc we R all little weaklings
