グーグルは12月7日、米国で開始した電子書籍販売サービス「Google eBooks」に関する説明会を開催した。同サービスはこれまで「Google Editions」（日本では「Googleエディション」）と語られてきたもの。7月に開催された「第17回 東京国際ブックフェア」では、北米で2010年夏、国内では2010年内に展開すると発表していた。 Googleでは、書籍の全文検索サービス「Google Books」（日本では「Googleブックス」）を展開している。このサービスに向けてパブリックドメインの書籍をスキャンし、パートナープログラムに参加する出版社の書籍を収集している。プログラムに参加するのは70カ国約3万5000社、書籍数では200万冊に上り、「北米では参加していない出版社を探す方が難しい」（グーグル 戦略事業開発本部 ストラテジック パートナー デベロップメント マネージャー
