  We gain so much, but what do we lose? What do we do with people no longer useful? Progress steamrolls its former heroes. Even having been a part of something bigger than yourself isn't the solace you'd imagined it to be, once you're of no use. Eat another rat!

  It is horrible, what happened.

  I don't want the easy release of thinking that there are strictly good and evil people - I want to know how all-in-all normal people, not monsters, commit monstrously heinous crimes. The alternatives, of just having throat-stomping scenes one after another, feels to me like an evening at the feelies. Afterward, all I'm left with is the same rage and hatred that fueled the acts, but pointed at a different target.
