  This was my first trip to the Herzog well (excluding Jack Reacher and that video of him *getting shot* mid-interview with Mark Kermode) and I had some concerns that this was going to be austere or somehow inaccessible. Fortunately(?) Aguirre plays like a knife fight between sanity and madness and gripped me from the first shot, a mesmerising image of the film's characters trekking through a distant South American mountain range to an ominous semi-religious score.
