Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean 1982
An absolutely fantastic and massively underrated Altman gem. Seriously, what were the critics at the time thinking??? This is one of the very, very, very few occasions where I actually agreed with Pauline Kael—Siskel, Ebert, and Vincent Canby were completely full of sh*t on this one.

A staggering portrayal. Despite looking very little like the real man, Hopkins manages to completely transform himself into Tricky Dick through subtle body language and contortions. That teethy grin and of course that unmistakable grumbling voice. As a film, it’s stylistically very similar to Stone’s JFK and thus almost functions as a spiritual sequel of sorts. Despite being far less derivative and having more of its own bizarre, almost experimental creative spark, this “antisequel” is a commentary on the incel fan culture that built up around the first film. The storyline is exceptionally more tragic. Also, the masses and comic book fans have been spoiled on connected cinematic universe bullshit for the last ten years. That’s why this is being met with such a negative reception.
