still as frustrating and distancing as it was when I first saw it in 2015. occasionally as sleek and nihilistic as a Bret Easton Ellis novel. I can sense Malick pushing to create a new cinema here and sometimes it works. beautifully photographed and sound designed. a movie that lures you in and pushes you away on repeat.
vibrant, funny, authentic and bathed in that golden glow of a sweaty NYC summer
More of a series of events than a story, A Complete Unknown can’t compete with other Dylan films like No Direction Home or Dont Look Back or Inside Llewyn Davis in their depictions of the 60s and Dylan’s rise. Chalamet is pretty good and Edward Norton is excellent. Absolutely insane choice to make a movie about Bob Dylan in the 60s and not show him doing any drugs.
My middle school basketball teammate Brian would make me watch Juwanna Mann on the tiny screen in his mom’s Ford Windstar every time she drove us to practice.
