It had some really great scenes like the extended kitchen service scene which weaved front of the house and back off the house in one super-tense ballet. But I don’t think the director pulled it off ultimately. I could see what he was striving for and I respect it but there were too many moments in the film that felt gimmicky or heavy handed. I left wanting to see a lot more Estela and a lot less Pedro.

The Substance 2024
The only thing that saved this movie for me was the ending which was the only part I didn’t see coming from the opening credits.

Earth Mama 2023
I would recommend watching this movie just for some great breakout performances by a lot of the cast. Maybe because there is so much new talent, this movie feels very raw like exposed nerves.
I appreciated the exploration into a cycle of race fueled dehumanization that seems destined to produce the worst outcomes. A woman is raised in foster care. She is not given the tools to function in society. She has kids. She gets in trouble. The kids are put in foster care. Repeat. You have to wonder who does this system serve?

Chronicles of a Wandering Saint 2023
An enjoyable and light hearted story about death. We follow a woman who wants so much to be loved by others but has to die to realize that all the love and admiration she was seeking could have been found in her husband.
There are a lot of fun aspects of this movie from the gossiping old church ladies to the underwhelming angels and devils that seem to go through the afterlife like the laziest employees at a fast food…
