Hybrid Apostolic / Lite Catholicism / Pop Zen / Vague Eastern Philosophical / Commercialized Surrealism (borrowing that last one from Pauline Kael).
Vivid imagery! Definitely a film to get high to. Not really that hard to follow along despite needing a few paragraphs to describe all the major points and events. This could be my old age showing, but few movies truly deserve to be over two hours long.
LOTS of nervous repertory cinema laughter where it was not truly warranted. Unless I missed the memo that a woman licking and kissing another woman's whip-inflected flesh wounds is supposed to be a riot.

Anora 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Tr*mp's America is gonna produce a lot more Ivans in this world, I'm afraid. A human wrecking ball. And just like America, Anora gets herself bamboozled by an alluring foreign influence.
Surely Ani has met and expertly maneuvered her way around her fair share of dick swingin' trust fund nepo babies before Ivan, but for this boy the money was so gargantuan that she really let her guard down. Kind of an inverse of the old country / hip hop song cliche of falling for a stripper.
As is cosmically correct, it was the WIFE of the unfathomably powerful Russian Oligarch who is most threatening.

Barbie 2023
I will praise nearly anything that scares far right-wing politicians and makes the zoomers in the audience google search "patriarchy" on their smartphones during the movie.
HAPPY that I got several good chuckles throughout, and about the phenomenal set + costume design.
SAD that the real winners here are the mega corp MATTEL® who will no doubt see their most profitable quarter in decades, and who have, like, 8 other toy- and franchise-based movies from parent / child companies already…

Oppenheimer 2023
Re-watched again this time on good old regular 70mm (as opposed to my first watch which was on 70mm IMAX™️ 150 miles away).
The regular 70mm picture quality was MUCH better. It was sort of jarring seeing it on IMAX and having the aspect ratio change from HUGE SQUARE IMAX to regular non-IMAX CINERAMA WIDESCREEN mid-scene and sometimes even mid-dialogue sequence! I get that the jumbo format cameras are big and noisy and not good for recording scenes with dialogue, and therefore impractical if not impossible to film the whole movie in 15 perf 70, but what’re we doing here?!
