  So much better than its reputation suggests! Prince is magnetic even before he gets to perform a single song, and a first time out Kristen Scott Thomas really is a joy to watch.

  The poster made me think it was a 20s period drama, but it isn't. The black and white photography makes it look absolutely lush.

  Starts as an interesting lowkey social drama with some interesting camera work, but then gets brutally waylaid by an extended homophobic attack sequence which takes up nearly a third of the film and is almost unwatchable in its graphicness.

  The last third sees another shift in tone, but by then it's hard to settle back into the narrative, if you've still got the stomach for it. Thought provoking, but ultimately, too excessive.
