  Hard to explain I don't like many aspects of this film and still think it's a very good 100 minutes of film. Somehow it's structurally extremely solid and sound. Second or third time I saw it.

  The over the top Hans Zimmer theme, the American flags, the confederate flags, Randy Quaid, and Robert Duvall in his baseball cap. I liked the beginning for this display of Reaganite patriotism with the stands full of cheering Americans having a good time in the 1980s. But then the movie is completely void of any meaning. Unstimulating zero-effort script.

  So this seems like a VICE documentary about the REAL Lord of War. The camera work is so bad (and incredibly rude!!!), and the documentary maker/interviewer only got lucky getting tipped off by the real local investigative journalist Richard Mgamba. There is also a real documentary about the fish in the lake which is shown at the ecological congress, and I would've preferred to watch that one. This is called 'highly controversial' as some sort of slick selling point, but…

  I guess I'm just not that into Alfonso Cuarón movies. They're extremely hyped each time as some life-changing, never-before-seen cinematic experience. While they're decidedly not (*imho -- I hurry to say that I'm just thinking of my personal impressions of the, for me, largely underwhelming Children of Men and Gravity here). My take is that Cuarón somehow makes small movies on a grand scale. And I hurry to start off by also saying this one isn't half bad, at all.…
