A Quiet Place: Day One 2024
I love sentimentality, it’s becoming harder to find in global blockbusters - but you can’t have a film with this much death/mutilation/terror - feel so saccharine.
There’s a lot to like. It’s got a wonderful visual style and the feeling of an isolated New York descending into Hell is a cool one. Reminds me of Halo 3 ODST. Shame that’s just a better story.

The Northman 2022
‘The Northman’ manages to be extremely faithful to the structure and style of Norse Sagas, whilst also satisfying more modern Hollywood storytelling. As grateful as I am that we get the scale that only big studio money could bring, I feel like Eggers’ vision is neutered by this marriage. The film truly shines at its more nightmarish and unconventional, but never revels in these scenes enough.
That being said, it is still one of my favourite films I’ve seen in recent times, and an oddity I’m very grateful for amidst current releases.
