Maybe it's just because I'm a proud northerner and a bit of a music geek but this heresy/history of the Manchester music scene from the late seventies to the early nineties absolutely kills me everytime. Such a funny script, wonderful casting and cameos and the fourth wall breaking moments are executed so well. Maybe sags a little in the second half but Steve Coogan, Michael Winterbottom and writer Frank Cottrell Bryce deserve so much credit for a film that perfectly captures the mix of grime and romance that makes Tony Wilson, Factory Records and the Hacienda so compelling.

So fun how Steven Soderbergh can just knock out films like this. Performances that really show the star power of Fassbender and Blanchett plus an excellent supporting cast (Marisa Abela in particular). Really enjoyed the dinner party scene and how it folded back at the end.

I'd love to see the next James Bond film learn loads from this. A conversation can be as exciting as a plane crash. Tight pacing and effective characterisation. Humour that is well integrated, not just flippant quips. Loads of fantastic outfits. Minimal special effects. Integrating technology effectively but believably.

There's still a suspicion that Wright doesn't get under the skin of these characters as well as he did with…

One of the most intense films I can remember watching. Deserved Oscar win for JK Simmons, great editing and direction and poses some uneasy questions about what it takes to be a legend.
