I was never a baby goth so this holds no particular place in my heart but I needed something to stick on while cooking and this fit the bill. A simple but effective story with some cute production design.
Maybe it's just because I'm a proud northerner and a bit of a music geek but this heresy/history of the Manchester music scene from the late seventies to the early nineties absolutely kills me everytime. Such a funny script, wonderful casting and cameos and the fourth wall breaking moments are executed so well. Maybe sags a little in the second half but Steve Coogan, Michael Winterbottom and writer Frank Cottrell Bryce deserve so much credit for a film that perfectly captures the mix of grime and romance that makes Tony Wilson, Factory Records and the Hacienda so compelling.
Kinetic musical heist movie about a tinnitus afflicted getaway driver and the one last job he is forced to pull before he can flee with his waitress girlfriend, packing a fantastic soundtrack, neat action and some great performances from the charming leads Ansel Elgort and Lily James as well as vampy Bonnie and Clyde types, Jon Hamm and Eiza Gonzalez.
