I must admit that my expectations for this one were somewhat tempered. Millennium Actress is the red-headed stepchild of the Satoshi Kon films; it's not as renowned as Perfect Blue, as beloved as Tokyo Godfathers, or as notorious as Paprika. Fittingly, the story at its core is more simple than any of Kon's other three films as well. The audience will find no psychological twists and turns, no city-wide odyssey, no surreal dream world. Millennium Actress is about a woman,…

All things considered, this is pretty decent sharksploitation. A novel approach to the concept with the protagonist being stuck so close to shore, yet she may as well be a million miles away for all the good that does her. I also like how we stay with her the entire time. The CGI's passable, not great, but I've seen way worse on similar movies. Steven Seagull has more charisma than his namesake.

I absolutely love the way this movie is crafted, keeping you sucked in for all two and a half hours without a single lull in the pacing. I'm not sure that I can say the same for its weird politics regarding capital punishment. I mean, obviously the two rednecks who set off the plot by raping a little girl deserved to die, the story is constructed in a way that you couldn't possibly think otherwise, and obviously nobody in the…

"AT LEAST IT CAN'T GET WORSE THAN MASTER OF DISGUISE," I SAID, STUPIDLY, WITH NO IDEA THAT THIS FILM'S SPECTER WAS HOVERING OVER ME LIKE A RAINCLOUD. THE FACT THAT THERE WAS A WIDE THEATRICAL RELEASE FOR BUCKY LARSON: BORN TO BE A STAR IS A BIGGER INSULT TO CINEMA THAN ANY MARVEL MOVIE COULD EVER BE. WHOSE FUCKING IDEA WAS IT TO GIVE NICK SWARDSON HIS OWN MOVIE? AND THEY DO THE FUCKING MIDWESTERN ACCENTS THE WHOLE FUCKING MOVIE!…

Netflix handed Joe and Anthony Russo an unjustifiably bloated budget to make ~content~ for them and they turned in a hollow celebration of 1980s and 90s consumerism. How the fuck did they manage to make a WORSE version of Ready Player One? Exhausting, ugly to look at, and a waste of so many talented individuals, all in the service of trying to tell basically the same story as The Creator but for fucking idiots. Seems to know that it has…
