March's Favorites: 80's Slashers
There is no question that "Earth vs The Flying Saucers" legacy persists due to Harryhausen's iconic stop motion UFO sequences, best represented in the films extremely entertaining 3rd act. Paul W.S. Anderson has sunk to new lows with this unwatchable mess of a movie. It's visually muddy and uninteresting, the plot is nonsensically thin and every big action sequences is nothing more than a ripoff of scenes and stunts done far better elsewhere.
The animation is beautifully stylized, the action is extremely inventive, and the humor mostly hits (yeah, the fart jokes are a bit much). "The Bad Guys" is a surprisingly fun animated heist adventure that manages to convey a poignant story about overcoming how the world perceives you to forge your own path. Oh, and the throwbacks to classic heist films, like the "Pulp Fiction" inspired opening, warm my little cinephile heart.
