March's Favorites: 80's Slashers
There is no other film out there that screams '80's' quite like "Big Trouble In Little China". It is one of John Carpenter's most bizarre films, and I say that with all the love in my heart. Kurt Russell is having an absolute blast and it's impossible not to fall for his bumbling macho charm. One of the best things about the film though, and what has helped it become the cult classic it is today, it is glorious practical and makeup effects! It absolutely would not be the film it is without the enormous talent of Steve Johnson, who designed and created all the creatures.
Based on a story by legend Ray Bradbury, "It Came From Outer Space" is a super fun slice of 50's sci-fi. Stars Richard Carlson and Barbara Rush are both very good in their roles and actually have some great on screen chemistry. Like many science fiction films of it time, the Cold War paranoia is palpable here. Mix it all with some extremely charming old school special effects and you have yourself one hell of a entertaining film! For fans of retro science fiction, this is one you can't miss.
"The War of the Worlds" was released in the early years of the Cold War as humanity moved into the atomic age, so it makes since that it encapsulates 1950's ideology so well. The films chilling and almost beautiful apocalyptic scenery echos the rising fear of atomic war, while the overall sense of paranoia that grips the narrative is indicative of the 'red scare' that had begun to sweep the country. The special effects are truely special and actually hold up given the era. There is a reason why it's considered a true Sci Fi classic.
