Blade Runner 2049 2017

I really dislike Denis Villeneuve's movies. They are very deceitful: stylish, polished, deliberate, but with no soul, no emotional substance, and ultimately with little to say beyond token expressions like "it's morally grey" (Sicario). 2049 is no different. It revels in bleak nihilism and its "serious" technique, which Villenueve interprets to just be never cutting and holding on superfluous but stylish shots FOREVER. Didn't the original Blade Runner run through just as many philosophical enigmas and questions but in a way that was actually fun to watch and that wasn't nearly three hours long (needlessly)?

A truly beautiful film. Really must be seen multiple times - the depths of character and nuances are incredible, as is the way Anderson manages to delicately shift gears into new, exciting tones. Film of the year no question. The fact that Shape of Water or Billboards will beat it to the major awards season accolades is a sad indictment of the current state of film.
