Doesn't cut quite as deep as some of Bong's other works, and Ruffalo can be gratingly hammy at times.

Mid-tier Bong is still better than most. Always grateful for weird blockbusters getting financed.

Appreciated it more the second time.

Light, silly, earnest filmmaking. So much better than that soulless Mario movie.

Interesting to see Carrey get an artistic consultant credit. We'll bring auteur theory back one comedic dance sequence at a time.

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie

    ★★½

It's Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the year 2023, if you've seen the trailers you know pretty much what to expect.

Paced like a YouTube compilation video, and probably written by a computer, it's far too much of a speedrun, rather than the full playthrough the plot needs.

Still, animation's great and the cast is good. Lots of fun details from the animation and sound teams.

Sonic 2 remains the king of 2020s video game adaptations (Sega finally did what nintendon't), but its fun with company and there's plenty of groundwork for better follow-ups.

Anya Taylor Joy Peach goes hard.

    ★★★½

A little bit underwhelming on the screenplay given the strength of Gerwig's prior films, and there's a niggling corporate money stench simmering in the background, but still everything that everyone who's going out for cocktails and Barbie could want and more. I'm sober and boring, so, alas, many laughs but no life-changing experience.

Even more Ryan Gosling Ken than I anticipated, he pretty much carries a good 60% of the film at least. Not to say that everyone else isn't…
