A dystopia stylistically akin to Blade Runner. A world dripping with neon and steeped in grime, where the technologic, sociopolitical, and authoritative tendencies are uncomfortably similar to our own. I wasn't alive when this was made, just born in the year it's set, and it is still extremely relevant. A fascinating time capsule (it's not lost on me that the rapist is a greasy haired Italian archetype, not the all American footballer type). The character of Ann and her understandable reaction to her assault was great, but the implication that rape is a purely mental problem and not a societal one, not so much.

The cognitive dissonance of the target audience (religious conservative) is amazing; to sit in the theatre and applaud this film for stating the value that European immigrants brought to the development of North America while not one person of colour is visible.
