A pair of thieves, Lily (Miriam Hopkins) and Gaston (Herbert Marshall) fall for each other while pulling jobs in Venice. Decamping to Paris, they steal the handbag of a perfume magnate Madame Colet (Kay Francis) and Gaston returns it for the reward money, and soon Colet becomes entranced with him. Lily soon comes to believe - not without reason - that Gaston is falling for Colet in return.

    What a delightful pre-Code gem.

Tony Camonte (Paul Muni, in a star-making role) is a gangster lieutenant in a barely-disguised Chicago who murders his way to the top of the food chain (he is VERY happy to discover the Tommy gun), causing a gang war in the process by horning into Irish-controlled territory against the wishes of his boss (whom he kills shortly thereafter). A couple of different endings of the film exist, but the one I saw has him gassed out of his fortified apartment during a standoff with the police and killed in a hail of bullets.

In a society where bears and mice live in fear of each other, a young mouse named Celestine befriends a grumpy bear named Ernest. Beautiful, hand-drawn animation. I might have cried a little at the end.

Two young siblings try to retrieve some money they found frozen in ice on the street in order to buy their friend some new glasses (a prize-winning turkey startled him in a parking garage and made off with the spectacles). A deadpan tour guide leads a group through the streets of Winnipeg in the dead of winter to show…
