Soya bean oil
Soybean oil is harvested from soya plants and can be used in a multitude of recipes. The soya plant grows primarily in regions with an abundance of water and a moderate climate such as the USA, Brazil, Argentina, and China. Contract months are October, December, January, March, May, July, August, and September for soybean oil. It can be traded until the business day prior to the 15th of the month with delivery on the last business day of the month. (read more)
To make soybean oil, raw soybeans are run through a catalytic cracker in a refinery. The oil is extracted and the remaining byproduct is turned into soybean meal, another tradable commodity. One bushel of soybeans produces 11 pounds of soybean oil and approximately 48 pounds of soybean meal. The oil itself has a light-yellow color and a mild taste. It can also be used in paint, plastics, lubricants, hair dyes, and biofuel as well as salads, shortening and margarine. Soybean oil can lower low-density cholesterol (LDL), treat osteoarthritis, and repel mosquitoes and other insects.
