Altaic Linguistics

Uluslararası Türkoloji alanının en önemli isimlerinden, 28 Kasım 2015 tarihinde kaybettiğimiz Prof. Dr. Talat Tekin’in çalışmaları hakkında sağlığında da pek çok değerlendirme yazısı yayımlanmıştı. Bu nedenle, önceki değerlendirmelerin de göz önünde tutulduğu bu yazıda, bilinenler yinelenmemeye çalışılarak gerektiğinde göndermelere başvurulmuş, özellikle genç araştırmacılar için kılavuz niteliğinde bir metin oluşturulmaya çalışılmıştır. Yazı, kilometre taşlarının öne çıkarıldığı bir Akademik Yaşam Öyküsü, Talat Tekin İçin Yayımlanmış Armağanlar ve Değerlendirme Yazıları, Makalelerinin Yer Aldığı Toplu Yayınlar ve Kronolojik Yayın Listesi bölümlerinden oluşmaktadır.

This paper concentrates on those maxims of Manchu language which deal with education and learning, and shows the attitude of Manchu people towards these aspects. Therefore, the article is an attempt to show how the Manchus perceived education and learning during the Qing dynasty, to translate their attitude to knowledge and to understand its role in their lives.
On the other hand the interpretation of maxims is fortified with insight into the cultural and social background of the times when Qing dynasty took power in China. Along with historical facts and cultural background on education, the paper suggests, where possible, parallels with relevant sayings (or proverbs) of Korean language.
Thus, the paper studies 18 Manchu language maxims on education and studies. Each maxim is translated into English and Korean languages and is provided with comments.

In the monograph for the fi rst time, based on the materials of the All-Russian Agricultural Census in 1917, ethnodemographic and ethnosocial development of the indigenous population of the Northern Altai foothills is analyzed. A plurality of identities of the indigenous population
of the Northern Altai foothills was enucleated, and the transformation of their anthroponymic system was studied.

Los numerales ibéricos: ¿indoeuropeos, afrasiáticos, proto-vascos, urálicos, o mas bien eurasiático-altaicos?

Ensayo epigráfico-lingüístico comparativo donde se muestra cómo los dos únicos dados conocidos hasta la fecha con letras ibéricas en sus caras, de acuerdo a la hipótesis acrofónica (signos para el principal fonema del término usado para cada numeral), solo pueden ser explicados como tales desde las lenguas de la familia conocida como Altaica o Eurasiático-Altaica.

Руническая надпись из Калбак-Таша II в Центральном Алтае (к вопросу об азах и территории их расселения)* Статья посвящена вводу в научный оборот, прочтению и интерпретации новой рунической надписи, найден-ной на местонахождении петроглифов Калбак-Таш II в Центральном Алтае. Если соседний петроглифический пункт Калбак-Таш I представляет собой крупнейшее местонахождение наскальных рунических надписей древнетюркской эпо-хи на территории не только Республики Алтай, но и всей России, то на данном памятнике это первая подобная наход-ка. Профессор М. Эрдал выполнил транслитерацию, перевод рунической надписи, которая насчитывает семь знаков, и дал комментарии к ней. Перевод звучит как: «Племя лошади. Охотники Азов (племени), откройте (путь)!». Вероят-но, эта надпись маркирует границы пастбищных угодий племен или небольших социальных групп, в данном случае – пле-мени азов. Предположительно она была нанесена в VIII в. В статье приводятся упоминания племени азов в рунических памятниках Монголии и Тувы, а также мнения различных исследователей относительно вероятной территории про-живания, связи с соседними племенами, происхождения азов и их дальнейшей исторической судьбы. Найденная руниче-ская надпись подтверждает точку зрения большинства ученых, согласно которой т.н. горные или горно-таежные азы обитали не только в Западной Туве, но и в Восточном и Южном Алтае, в то время как степные проживали совместно с кыргызами в Хакасско-Минусинской котловине. Не исключено, что племени азов могли соответствовать археологи-ческие древности кудыргинского типа на Алтае. Упоминание в надписи из Калбак-Таша II этнонима – племени азов – подчеркивает важность этой новой находки на Алтае. Подобные памятники древнетюркского письма, несмотря на их лаконичность, являются существенным дополнением широко известных орхонских рунических текстов, повествующих об истории тюркских каганатов.

The article introduces and interprets a new runic inscription found at the Kalbak-Tash II petroglyphic site in Central Altai. Whereas the adjacent petroglyphic site, Kalbak-Tash I, is the largest collection of Old Turkic runic texts in the Altai Republic and in Russia at large, Kalbak-Tash II has so far yielded only one such inscription, consisting of seven characters. Professor Marcel Erdal has suggested its transliteration, translation, and commentary. The proposed translation reads, " The Horse tribe. Hunters of the Az (tribe), open (the way)! " The inscription, evidently dating to the 8th century, marks boundaries of tribal grazing areas or those of small social units, in this case, the Az tribe, mentioned in runic texts from Mongolia and Tuva. Various viewpoints regarding their location, affi nities with neighboring tribes, origin, and later history are discussed. This new inscription confi rms the common

Almost twenty years after the publication of this piece, it may be in order to insert a remark: For me, who is (albeit only due to the realities of the Latin alphabet only) listed as the main author of this paper (in fact I did little more than furnish bibliographical data and oversee the historiographical sections of this), the skepticism towards Altaic as a valid genealogical grouping has grown even bigger over the years, and it is, thus, important to note that the final paragraph of this text, which documents my position as of 1998, is more valid today than it was back then. This joint paper was written in its time to forge a bridge between proponents and opponents of the hypothesis, and it took some effort to do so. As such, it may stand, but it is wrong to assume, or to construct from my co-authorship, that I was a "pro-Altaicist" back then and have changed my mind. In fact, the development of the field since the end of the 20th century did anything but mollifying my skepticism toward this, quite on the contrary. My position is, certainly, better reflected in other (single-authored) contributions of mine, as e.g. 'Haupt und Glieder' or 'The poverty of Altaicism'.

Изучение древних культур Алтайской горной системы являлось приоритетным направлением в деятельности Владимира Дмитриевича Кубарева как ученого-археолога. Ни одно серьезное исследование по проблемам петроглифоведения, раннего железного века и особенно древнетюркской археологии Центральной Азии не обходится без привлечения результатов работ Владимира Дмитриевича в этом регионе. Наши изыскания на могильниках Берел, Каракаба и других в Казахском Алтае во многом развивались в русле его научных взглядов. Данью уважения его памяти является этот краткий раздел о предварительных результатах наших работ в верховьях р. Каракаба.
Археологический памятник Каракаба в Казахском Алтае, открытый нами в 2002 г., расположен на территории Катон-Карагайского района Восточно-Казахстанской области Республики Казахстан. Могильник Каракаба состоит из нескольких разрозненных «курганных» групп (рис. 189, 190). К настоящему времени нами на этом памятнике зафиксировано около 60 разновременных объектов. В 2012–2015 гг. на разных участках некрополя исследовано 15 объектов (рис. 190), из которых 8 относится к раннесредневековой эпохе. Приведем краткое описание части из них.

This interdisciplinary study, published in Scientific Culture, journal supported by the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, allowed me to establish, on the basis of linguistic, genetic, archaeological, historical and religious data, that linguistic concordances between Gaulish and Slavic were linked with Neolithic migrations from NorthWestern India and Pakistan to Iran, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, the North of the Black Sea, Danubic and Balkan Europe, Gaul and Iberia, where Neolithic farmers contributed to the formation of the megalithic civilisation which developed in Gaul from 5.000 BC and brought an archaic language stemming from a Trans-Eurasian original language. This explains the linguistic concordances I established between Gaulish and Dravidian languages-250 common words from the 500 words I studied (and 160 with Burushaski), as well as with Altaic, Uralic, Kartvelian, Anatolian and Middle-Eastern languages. This also explains similarities I have found in the organisation of the Society and religion, which lead certain researchers to suggest, on the basis of the spread of the very ancient haplogroup H2 P-96 from India to Western Europe, that first Europeans and proto-Dravidians had a very ancient common origin, as the macrohaplogroup F and the haplogroup H could appear in India.

La Lista Swadesh de voces vascas estables resistente a la donación lingüística y lo que revela su comparación con las restantes familias de lenguas del mundo. Aún hallamos en los libros de textos universitarios y en las enciclopedias más autorizadas el viejo paradigma de que el vasco ­como aún es denominado a nivel internacional y por los mismos vascólogos­ es un idioma aislado sin pariente alguno y que por ello mismo no sabemos nada sobre su origen. ¿Es realmente cierto que la lengua vasca no tiene parientes ni siquiera en otros lugares de Eurasia? ¿Surgió espontáneamente de la nada? ¿Acaso fue inventado por una persona que vivía en una de las cuevas paleolíticas del País Vasco y desde entonces se mantuvo el idioma aislado sin apenas evolución? Vamos a intentar dar respuesta a estas preguntas desde las herramientas que nos ofrecen la Lingüística Histórica y la Léxicoestadística comparadas.

Genealogía de la Lengua ÍBERA

Fono-morfotipología frecuencial de la lengua íbera, comparada con la euskérica y las principales familias de lenguas eurasiáticas1 sino-caucasianas y afrasiáticas2

Sobre la lengua íbera -tal como sucede con la lengua euskera- aún se sostiene que no se conoce su filiación, y que si no estuviera realmente relacionada con el Pre-Proto-Vasco o el Proto-Vasco mismo (hipótesis con más partidarios), muy probablemente se trataría de otra lengua aislada. El autor considera que la lengua íbera perteneció a alguna de las antiguas familias lingüísticas conocidas de Eurasia y este breve estudio fono-morfotipológico frecuencial y comparativo tiene como objetivo lograr, al menos, una aproximación a la cuestión.

This paper provides further evidence for the well-known fact that typology  is meaningless for establishing genetic relationships. In fact, I demonstrate that Korean shares with various Paleosiberian languages more common typological features than with 'Altaic', where the commonality of the typological features was and still is is taken as a proof of the 'Altaic' pedigree of Korean.
