Working within the vast world of Arabic poetry, writer, translator, and professor Huda J. Fakhreddine has done much to elucidate the movements of literary forms throughout history, the necessity of constantly interacting with tradition, and the inner universe of poems as they communicate and exchange with one another. Through her extensive knowledge and sensitivity to the capacities of poetic language, Fakhreddine has demonstrated powerfully that, as in a piece by her father that she translated: "Poetry is the deepest sea, distant yet more urgent than surf breaking on rocks." Here, in this wide-ranging interview, Alton Melvar M Dapanas speaks to her on the importance of form and meter, the necessity of removing Arabic poetry from reductive study, the ongoing engagement of reading and translation, and the intimate way she came to love and feel safe in the world of a poem. Alton Melvar M Dapanas (AMMD): Certain paradoxes and ironies made an impression in me after reading your latest book, The Arabic Prose Poem (https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/book-the-arabic-prose-poem.html) (2021): that the Arabic free verse, or the qasīdat al-tafīla, is not "free" in the way of its Anglophone (free verse) and Francophone (vers libre) counterparts, and that Arabic free verse poets like Nāzik al-Malāʾika and later on, Ahmad ʿAbd al-Muʿtī Hijāzī, are, surprisingly, the fiercest opponents of the prose poem. Huda J. Fakhreddine (HJF): Meter is the marker of poetry in the Arabic tradition, even if symbolically and not fundamentally. It is the fence that separates poetry from other forms-even those that have strong claims to the poetic. The modernist movement of the 20th century was the first organized and theorized effort to jump the fence of meter; this doesn't mean that the fence was not jumped before, only that it was not done so in such a collective and deliberate manner. The Arabic free verse poem was the result of that formal experimentation or innovation. But a more accurate label than "free verse" is qaṣīdat al-tafʿīla. The tafʿīla is the single foot or metrical unit, and a pattern of tafʿīlas makes up a meter in classical prosody. The modern poets no longer committed to the meters in their full patterns, but simplified them or reduced them to their building units (the individual tafʿīla), and often in qaṣīdat al-tafʿīla, the poem is built on a single metrical unit and its variations. The term free verse (al-shiʿr al-ḥurr) is thus confusing and not very accurate, since such poems still adhere to metrical considerations. The use of the term free verse is a testament to the influence of translation in the formative years of the Arabic modernist movement-though, as I argue in the book, translation was not that most decisive influence. I think the conversation with the Arabic poetic tradition, even when antagonistic and fraught, is really at the core of that movement, and is the real springboard to its most significant contributions. This is also why the term qaṣīdat al-tafʿīla is the most reflective of the movement's intervention in form and its thinking about the role of meter.

This article examines a famous element in the reports on the canonization of the Qurʾānic text under the auspices of Uthman, in which the committee of scribes that were to write the standard text came to a disagreement on how to write the Qurʾānic word for at-tābūt "Ark." After examining the different versions of the report that contain this episode, and concluding that the report of this episode goes back to the common link of Ibn Šihāb al-Zuhrī (d. 124/741-2), it is shown that early on the linguistic details of this disagreement were no longer understood. However, by examining how Aramaic and Classical Ethiopic loanwords that end in stem-final-ūt or-ōt are treated, this report can be understood as referring to two competing adaptations of this foreign word into Arabic. On the one hand at-tābūt, the form that ends up in the standard text, and on the other hand at-tābāh (or more precisely: at-tābōh), which shows a similar strategy of adaptation as several other central loanwords in the Qurʾān such as aṣ-ṣalāh "prayer" and az-zakāh "alms."

Este trabalho apresenta uma breve crítica etimológica do termo étnico-geográfico zanj, de origem árabe-persa e empregado como categoria de classificação de sociedades africanas em textos histórico-geográficos do mundo islâmico desde, pelo menos, o século VIII EC. De maneira diacrônica em relação a outros termos análogos, interessa-nos a presença da denominação zanj em textos produzidos em contexto leste-africano, por eruditos muçulmanos da chamada Costa Suaíli, em meados do século XIX EC - nominalmente, as crônicas Kitāb al-Zunūj e Kawkab al-Durrīya al-Aḫbār Ifrīqīyah. Após uma apresentação da etimologia do termo zanj, analisaremos as implicações do emprego de tal palavra, originalmente cunhado em designação derrogatória de povos africanos, por uma sociedade afromuçulmana em contexto colonial.

The Mesopotamian Qəltu dialects are well-known for their extensive use of ʾimālah. This paper reexamines the historical development of this ʾimālah and identifies three independent processes. One of these processes clearly continues the phonemic distinction between two early Arabic phonemes *ē and *ā which have merged to ā in Modern Standard Arabic. It is shown that this phonemic distinction was present in several Quranic reading traditions from Kufa. It is shown that specifically the reading tradition of al-Kisāʾī (d. 189/804) show clear traces of all three ʾimālah processes now found in the Mesopotamian Qəltu dialects, and thus serves as one of our earliest witnesses of these processes.

This research was conducted with the purpose of identifying the ability to write essays in Arabic among students of the Bachelor of Arabic Language in public universities. A total of 283 students from four public universities i.e. Universiti Malaya (26 students), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (41 students), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (86 students), and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (130 students) participated in this research. Data collected was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) versi 22.0. A simple descriptive analysis method i.e. means score analysis is used to obtain findings. The overall findings show that the students’ ability to write essays in Arabic in the public universities chosen is average with a mean of USIM (min=3.34), UNISZA (min=3.60), UKM (min=3.50) dan UM (min=3.50). Статья посвящена описанию рукописных сочинений дагестанских авторов, оказавшихся в коллекции Института восточных рукописей РАН. В формате небольшого каталога авторы знакомят читателей с манускриптами из фонда Мусульманских рукописей: указывается название сочинения на арабском языке с транслитерацией на русский, автор, формат рукописи, количество строк и листов в ней, тематика, дата переписки, переписчик и место переписки, если это возможно определить, а также дополнительные сведения о рукописи, в том числе и палеографические. Исследование выполнено с опорой на материалы каталога А. Б. Халидова: сочинения были выявлены, повторно исследованы и более подробно и предметно описаны. В коллекции института удалось найти сочинения авторства Са'ида Араканского (ал-Харакани) (1763-1834), Идриса-афанди из с. Эндирей (ум. 1874), Хасана ал-Алкадари (1834-1910) и многие другие.

A preacher in premodern Islam discoursed on religion and ethics in various devotional, political, military, and social contexts. He was known by terms that denoted diverse forms of preaching, albeit with considerable overlap. Each form of preaching had individual characteristics and distinct chronological developments, some official and some popular, yet all types of Muslim preachers based their pious counsel squarely on the Qur'an, and, to varying extents, on the prophet Muhammad's hadith, and they were mostly in classical Arabic and had roots in the themes, style, and form of early Arabic oration (khutba); all urged virtue and piety.

In this research, the aim is to determine the timeline for the creation of the works Asrār al-balāga and Dalāil al-i’jāz by the 11th-century scholar ʿAbd al-Qāhir alJurjānī (d. 471/1078-1079). Al-Jurjānī did not specify which of these works, which encompassed poetry criticism, rhetoric, and i’jāz, was composed first. This lack of clarity has led to the debate on whether Asrār was written before Dalāil. Over the years, researchers have approached this issue primarily through implied evidence, leaving room for speculation and avoiding definitive conclusions. In contrast, this study is grounded in a manuscript that provides crucial insights into the timing of Dalāil’s composition. The study begins by presenting the perspectives of researchers on this topic and subsequently conducts a thorough analysis of significant copies of Dalāil. Within this framework, notable conclusions about al-Jurjānī’s scholarly pursuits were drawn by scrutinizing the information in the manuscript, which conveys the statements of a contemporary of al-Jurjānī named Abû Zayd from Jurjān. This pioneering study aims to enhance our understanding of al-Jurjānī’s scholarly endeavors and objectives by identifying the chronology of Asrār and Dalā’il, recognized as fundamental sources of rhetoric.

أيُّهُما أسبَقُ تَأليفًا: أسرار البلاغة أم دلائل الإعجاز؟" دراسة تحليلية حول تاريخ تأليف الأسرار والدلائل
تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استقصاء تاريخ تأليف كتابَي الشيخ عبد القاهر الجرجاني (ت 471 هـ) أسرار البلاغة ودلائل الإعجاز. حيث يُلاحظ أن الشيخ عبد القاهر لم يُقدّم أي معلومة واضحة بشأن تاريخ تأليف هذين الكتابين. لقدْ أثار هذا الأمر تساؤلات بين الباحثين منذ القرن العشرين. اعتمدت الدراسات السابقة =مع جودتها ورسوخها= على الأدلة الداخلية والتخمينات في ظل غياب نصوص صريحة تحدد تاريخ التأليف بدقة .من خلال هذه الدراسة يسعى الباحث إلى إلقاء الضوء على هذه القضية مستندًا إلى معلومات مستمدة من نسخة مخطوطة تعود إلى القرن الخامس أو السادس الهجري، والتي تُقدّم أدلة مهمة حول تاريخ تأليف كتاب دلائل الإعجاز. في بداية الدراسة، تم عرض وتحليل آراء الباحثين السابقة حول الموضوع، تليها دراسة نقدية وتحليلية للنسخ الأصلية لكتاب دلائل الإعجاز، مما تسهم في وضع سياق تاريخي لتأليف هذا الكتاب .تهدف هذه الدراسة التي تُعد الأولى من نوعها إلى الإسهام في فهم المسار العلمي للشيخ عبد القاهر الجرجاني وأهدافه في دراسة الإعجاز القرآني.

Lahirnya Kitab Ayyuhal Walad bermula ketika seorang murid menemui Imam Al-Ghazali. Ia telah menghabiskan waktu bertahun-tahun dalam ber-mula zamah dengan gurunya itu. Berbagai jenis ilmu telah diwarisinya. Kitab-kitab karya Al-Ghazali, seperti Ihya' 'Ulumuddin, telah selesai dibacanya. Meski demikian, ia be lum puas. Saat hendak meninggalkan Sang Guru, murid itu datang meminta nasihat. Inilah contoh adab murid kepada guru. Ia tidak sekadar berbasa-basi untuk ber pamitan kepada gurunya, tetapi juga me minta nasihat wada' (nasihat perpisahan) secara tertulis. Tujuannya agar selalu ingat dengan nasihat gurunya.


Al-Ghazali berkenan mengabulkan permintaan murid kesayangannya tersebut. Ia menuliskan baris-baris nasihatnya sehingga menjadi sebuah buku kecil. Barisbaris itu selalu diawali dengan kalimat "ayyuhal walad" yang berarti "wahai ananda". Kalimat itu menunjukkan betapa akrabnya hubungan antara murid dan gu ru, seperti hubungan antara anak dan ba pak. Oleh karena itu, Al-Ghazali selalu me manggil muridnya dengan kalimat "ayyuhal walad", wahai anandaku.


Lantas, siapakah nama murid yang karenanya Kitab Ayyuhal Walad itu di tulis? Nama murid yang berjasa bagi mun culnya kitab Ayyuhal Walad ini me mang tidak diketahui. Jadi, ia adalah pahlawan tak dikenal. Melalui dirinyalah, umat Islam hari ini bisa mengambil manfaat dari Kitab Ayyuhal Walad.

Al-Ghazali mengawali nasihatnya dengan kalimat yang sangat indah. Ia me manggil muridnya dengan panggilan penuh simpati juga mendoakannya. Kata Al-Ghazali, "Wahai ananda tercinta. Se moga Allah memanjangkan usiamu agar bisa mematuhi-Nya. Semoga pula Allah memudahkanmu dalam menempuh jalan orang-orang yang dicintai-Nya."

ركزت البلاغة وما ارتبط بها من دراسات عبر تاريخها الممتدّ على البلاغة البالغة، ونادرا ما التُفت
إلى بلاغة الأطفال على الرغم من الدور الأساس الذي أدّته ومازالت تؤدّيه هذه البلاغة في صناعة الرأي والتأثير فيه، وفي مقاومة خطابات السلطة وأشكال الهيمنة السائدة؛ إذ كثيرا ما ينتج الأطفال خطابات بليغة، أو يُستغلون بوصفهم موضعا بلاغيا عاطفيا للتأثير في المتلقي، أو يوظفون في إلقاء خطابات بليغة أنتجها البالغون، لكن إلقاء الطفل يضفي عليها قوة حجاجية وعاطفية أكبر، قد تفوق قوة بلاغة الكبار. تسعى المقالة إلى التحليل البلاغي لبعض خطابات الأطفال على موقعي فيس بوك ويوتيوب، وبعض الخطابات التي توظف الأطفال في خطابات مقاومة العدوان على غزة وإيقافه، وفي إنتاج ما سمّاه دافيد ألثايد))) بِ «خطاب الخوف » ومقاومته، والوقوف عند وظيفة هذه الخطابات ومساهمتها في تغيير الواقع الاجتماعي والسياسي القائم، لاسيما أن أطفال اليوم هم رجال الغد، وللطفولة آراء ومواقف يمكن أن تحيي ضمائر الراشدين وتدفع بهم إلى مقاومة الهيمنة والطغيان حتى يورّثوهم عالما أفضل وغدا أجمل. ونستعين بمنهج التحليل البلاغي للخطاب، لاسيما أدوات مدرسة البلاغة الجديدة، والوقوف عند العناصر البلاغية ووظائفها داخل سياق الوضعية التخاطبية. وقد خلص البحث إلى أن الأطفال صاروا قوة خَطابية وبلاغية، لاسيما مع ظهور وسائط التواصل الاجتماعي، لينتجوا خطابات تعبّر عن آرائهم في الفضاء العام الافتراضي، وتهم القضايا الاجتماعية والسياسية العامة، وانشغالاتهم الحقوقية ودائرة رغباتهم واهتماماتهم، وليؤثروا في الرأي العام العالمي من أجل الدفع به إلى تبني آرائهم ومواقفهم ونصرة قضيتهم.

يُقدِّمُ هذا الكتابُ رؤيةً جديدةً لبناء مقرَّر القواعد العربيَّة للناطقين بغيرها، لأنَّ المقرّرات الحاليَّة - برأي المؤلّف - لا تلبّي حاجة المتعلِّم في النصوص التي يدرسها.
وقدَّم المؤلّف تصوُّرَهُ لمعايير مقرَّر القواعد المناسب للناطقين بغير العربيَّة، فحدَّد الأهداف من تعليم القواعد، ووضَّح منهجيَّة الوصول إلى تلك الأهداف، ووضع المعايير التي تضبط ترتيب الموضوعات وتبويبها، ثمَّ دعم تصوُّرَهُ النظريَّ بنماذجَ تطبيقيَّةٍ.

Bu kitap, Arapça bimeyenlere Arapça gramer müfredatının hazırlanmasında yeni bir vizyon sunmaktadır. Çünkü mevcut gramer müfredatının metodolojisi ve yapısıyla, arzu edilen amaca hizmet etmediği düşünülmektedir.
Yazar bu kitapta, Arapça bimeyenlere uygun bir gramer müfredatına yönelik vizyonunu ortaya koymuştur. Gramer öğretiminin amaçlarını tanımlamış, bu amaçlara ulaşmanın metodolojisini açıklamış, ve konuların sırası ve sınıflandırılmasını ortaya koyan kriterleri belirlemiştir. Bu teorik görüşünü uygulamalı örneklerle desteklemiştir.

CENTENARY OF ARABIC LANGUAGE TEACHING IN KERALA
This book, "Centenary of Arabic Language Teaching in Kerala," explores the rich history and evolution of Arabic language education in the Indian state of Kerala over the past century. It traces the origins of Arabic instruction, highlighting key figures, institutions, and cultural influences that have shaped its development. Through a comprehensive analysis of pedagogical practices, curriculum changes, and community engagement, the book illustrates the significant role Arabic language teaching has played in fostering cultural exchange and enhancing religious and scholarly pursuits. By examining contemporary challenges and future prospects, this work aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Arabic language's impact on Kerala's socio-cultural landscape, celebrating a century of linguistic heritage and educational progress.

This article explores the history of the Türkenbeute manuscripts in Halle. The decades following the Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683 witnessed an influx into Central-Europe of Qur’ans, prayer books, Qur’anic commentaries, and legal compendia that had been looted from battlefields and conquered cities. Many such items found their way to Halle, where they came to stock the libraries attached to the complex of schools and the orphanage founded in 1698 by the Pietist theologian, August Hermann Francke (1663–1727). Following a sketch of the manuscripts’ provenance, the article summarises the factors that encouraged the study of the ‘Oriental’ languages at Halle in the early eighteenth century. It then documents the work of two Pietist students of Arabic, Christian Benedict Michaelis (1680–1764) and Johann Heinrich Callenberg (1694–1760), in order to show how the spoils of war could be put to use to further the aspirations of scholarship.

The compilation and transcription process of classical Arabic poetry has sparked several significant debates. These debates have centered around the authenticity, origins, and historical aspects of Arabic poetry. Within this context, questions such as "When did Arabic poetry first emerge? Who were the first poets? When were the first long qasidas recited?" have arisen. Scholars have offered various perspectives on these questions. For instance, Ibn Sallam al-Jumahi's (d. 231/845 [?]) explanations regarding the period in which the first long qasidas were recited and al-Jahiz's (d. 255/869) assessments of the history of Arabic poetry illustrate these differing viewpoints. These perspectives, which contribute to a better understanding of the development of Arabic poetry, have influenced researchers' approaches to classical Arabic poetry, not only in the classical period but also in contemporary times. Although it is challenging to determine the exact history of Arabic poetry, the prevailing view is that it emerged during the pre-Islamic era known as the Jahiliyyah. However, due to scholars' interpretations, researchers have reached different conclusions regarding this period. Al-Jahiz's explanations about the history of Arabic poetry have been particularly misinterpreted by some researchers, leading to attributions of views he never supported. An example is the notion that Arabic poetry began 150-200 years before Islam. In reality, while al-Jahiz mentioned numerical values in his discussion on the history of poetry, he did not refer to its origin. Instead, he highlighted its perfect form that developed over centuries. This study aims to analyze and evaluate al-Jahiz's views on the history of Arabic poetry. To ensure a correct understanding of al-Jahiz's perspective, the views of his contemporaries on the subject are first presented, followed by an analysis of al-Jahiz's own views. The study investigates texts related to the question, "Did al-Jahiz, with his findings and assessments, point to the deep-rooted past or the perfect beginning of classical Arabic poetry?" The primary aim of this study is to demonstrate that, contrary to some researchers' claims, al-Jahiz's emphasis on 150-200 years refers to the period of the poetry's maturation. To achieve this aim, the study employs the tazawwuk method, which focuses on details arising from sentence structure and word choices. Within the framework of this detailed analysis required by the method, the word choices and emphases in al-Jahiz's views are identified and subsequently synthesized with other sources. Thus, the study illustrates how literary texts prone to misinterpretation should be analyzed using the tazawwuk method. This distinctive aspect of the study is significant in providing an example for future research in the fields of poetry criticism and literature in general.

The authenticity of pre-Islamic Arabic poetry has long been debated, with claims suggesting that some poems were actually composed after the advent of Islam. As these works were orally transmitted and recorded centuries later, questions about their true origins remain. In our present article, we explore how modern text-processing techniques can help identify when classical Arabic poems were composed. Using a dataset from two major periods—the pre-Abbasid and Abbasid eras—we trained machine learning models to predict a poem's composition period, achieving strong results (F1 scores of 0.73–0.90). Our analysis of disputed poems revealed that only a small number of the disputed texts we examined were truly composed during the Abbasid era, while the majority were not. This offers a valuable insight into the authenticity of many poems attributed to the pre-Islamic era.

Meşhur mutasavvıflar yetiştiren Sivâsîler ailesinden olan Abdülahad Nûrî eserlerinin çoğunu döneminde Kadızâdelilerin tasavvuf ehline yönelik eleştirilerine cevap olarak kaleme almıştır. Bunlar arasında Hz. Peygamber'in anne-babasının imanı, devranın caiz olması, zikrin fazileti ve faydaları, tayy-i mekân meselesi, vefat etmiş müminlere amellerin sevabını bağışlama meselesi, velilerin tasarrufu gibi konular zikredilebilir. İlahi sevgiyi konu edinen Huccetü'l-vidâd de müellifin döneminde tartışılan bir meseleye, kulun Allah'a, Allah'ın kula karşı sevgisinin niteliği konusunda tasavvuf ehlinin görüşlerini ortaya koyan bir eserdir. Kelam âlimleri Allah Teâlâ'nın kullarına karşı muhabbetini onlardan hoşnut olması ve rızası, kulların Allah Teâlâ'ya karşı muhabbetlerini de O'na boyun eğmeleri olarak tevil etmektedirler. هدفت الد ارسة إلى التعرف على أساليب الدعاية في الخطاب الاس ارئيلي الموجه للجمهور العربي عبر وسائل الاعلام الحديثة صفحة (اس ارئيل تتكلم بالعربية) انموذجا. ولتحقيق أهداف الد ارسة والإجابة على تساؤلاتها, قام الباحث بتصميم استمارة تحليل مضمون, وقام الباحث بإتباع المنهج الوصفي الارتباطي والعينة العشوائية لأغ ارض هذه الد ارسة. توصلت الد ارسة إلى عدد من النتائج وكان أبرزها: أظهرت الد ارسة أن الخطاب الإس ارئيلي الموجه للجمهور العربي يعتمد على استخدام اللغة العربية في منشو ارته وقد بلغ العدد على منشو ارت اللغة العربية 55 بنسبة 100% اعتمادها اللغة العربية. وكشفت الد ارسة أن الخطاب الإس ارئيلي يستخدم النص بشكل مكثف لتوصيل رسائله وإيصال فكرته بشكل قوي وفعال فقد بلغت النسبة عليه 50% أما جاءت النسبة على فئة صورة 30% أما فئة مقطع فيديو فقد بلغت 20%، تشير الد ارسة إلى أن الخطاب الإس ارئيلي الموجه للجمهور العربي يستفيد بشكل كبير من السياسة الحديثة في ترويج رسائله والتفاعل مع الجمهور حيث بلغت النسبة على منشوارت السياسة 20% من عينة الد ارسة. ومن ابرز التوصيات التي اوصى بها الباحث: تتجه التوصيات بشكل رئيسي نحو الصحفيين والناشطين الفلسطينيين الفاعلين في المنصات الرقمية وشبكات التواصل الاجتماعي لإد ارك أهمية موقعهم

The literature presented to the Arab child, including inherited tales and
melodies, contributes to the formation of the child's culture and enables him or her to accomplish uniqueness in a world where the cultures and knowledge presented to them today are intertwined. As the child grew up with his family in accordance with a particular pattern of customs, traditions, and legacies, his intellectual and linguistic structure formed. The child of today has not had the opportunity to learn, converse with the elderly, or play while listening to inherited stories and melodies. The child grew up within a system of knowledge and data that contributed to his education and indoctrination. Children's literature contributed to the formation of a generational divide in terms of linguistic
dictionaries related to cultures and identity concepts. From this standpoint, the current research aims to investigate the reality of
interest in the literature of the Arab child by examining the most important Arab initiatives for recording children's stories and shedding light on some
international and Arab models in this field.
The research followed descriptive analytical research methods in investigating the most important stories and initiatives for the registration of children's literature globally and in the Arab world, and the research came out with a number of recommendations, the most important of which is the need to intensify attention to Arab children's literature because of its role in shaping children's culture through diversity of shapes, concepts, symbols, and words. In addition to the necessity of building a linguistic dictionary for the Arab child,
focus should be placed on Arabic culture and identity.
