Arabic Language and Literature

This is a short poem by Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Ṣabbān (d. 1206/1791) translated from the original Arabic into English verse. The poem is a concise, technical list of the ten essentials aspects of any science. It is intended to help students memorize the outline of the topic, while a teacher's additional commentary would be needed to really understand the content and meaning of the ten essentials.

A partir de l'étude du chapitre 38 de l'ouvrage du savant mecquois al-Fâsî (m. 1429), Shîfâ' al-gharâm bi-akhbâr al-balad al-harâm, consacré à l'histoire du hajj, cet article tente d'identifier les modes de représentation du pouvoir mecquois dans l'oeuvre d'al-Fâsî. Il suggère que le récit récurrent des fitnas qui déchirèrent la cité sainte au moment du pèlerinage était une manière de
mieux en neutraliser les effets et les traces, à un moment où s'affirmait un nouveau pouvoir local fort, autour du chérif Hasan b. 'Ajlân.

The Theme of Anecdote and its Place in The Literature Arabs and Turks
When jokes or anecdotes are studied, it is possible to find the ideas, traditions, customs, morality and ethic values, socio-cultural constructions of the folk even the subject matters such as their histories. So we may state that the jokes or anecdotes are mirrors of the society reflecting its characteristics.
In this article the position of jokes and anecdotes especially in Turkish and Arabic literatures was studied.

Although the 19th-century Sufi figure al-Shaikh Māʾ al-ʿAynain led a major resistance movement in the Northwestern Sahara and Morocco and was one of the most widely printed authors on the Fez lithographic press, very little information on his literary and scholarly output exists in Europhone sources. This is largely due to the marginalization of texts inconsistent with Middle East-centered narratives of reform and revival inspired by the encounter with Europe. As part of a larger effort to read Maghrebi literatures on their own terms rather than imposing European or Middle Eastern timelines and concepts, this paper reads Māʾ al-ʿAynain’s 1858 riḥla (travelogue) to Mecca for how he conceptualized his world and traveled within it, including local, regional, and transregional elements.

Found in *Teaching Arabic Literature in Translation* edited by Michelle Hartman  (MLA Publications 2018; pp 41-61), this essay is an exploration of the potential pedagogical spaces of alternative methodologies and theories for teaching Arabic literature in English translation in North American university classrooms. This proposal encourages academics—specialists, comparativists, and generalists alike—to reflect not only on the contexts of Arabic literary production (i.e., the context of the text, author, language, etc.) but also on the social relations in which educators, their students, classrooms, and institutions are enmeshed with the translation, circulation, deployment, and reading of Arabic texts within any given political moment. In exploring teaching Arabic literature in translation, this chapter takes a decolonial approach where the students and instructor not only locate themselves in regards to the text and the origins of that Arabic text (for example, in the age of  the Cold War, the American Unipolar World, or post-American Empire). But also, the pedagogical thoughtfulness considers ideological constructs of reading and writing (the commuting between the context, history and contact points of Arabic and English) that might be mutually untranslatable but also could yield ways to decenter the coloniality of the learning process in US higher education and its experience with the Global South.

A partir de los textos de las epístolas denominadas zurzūriyyāt, en este artículo se pretende profundizar en las dos caras del personaje en torno al cual se articulan estas originales y singulares composiciones, exclusivas de la literatura andalusí. El retrato literario que de él transmiten tiene mucho que decir sobre la figura histórica de un hombre apodado al-Zurayzīr, que en estas creaciones literarias oscila entre el símbolo y la realidad y que recuerda mucho al héroe de las maqāmāt.

Based on the epistles called zurzūriyyāt, in this article we try to study in depth the two sides of the character around which these original and unique literary pieces —exclusive of Andalusian literature— revolve. The literary portrait that these texts convey about the mentioned character has much to say about the historical figure of a man nicknamed al-Zurayzīr, who fluctuates between symbol and reality in these literary creations and who is very reminiscent of the hero of the maqāmāt.

The paper (in French) analyses the influence of German philosophy, especially Nietzsche and Heidegger, on the poetry and thinking of the Syrian Poet Adunis (or Adonis, pen-name for Ali Ahmad Said Esber). It was published in the catalogue of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris on the occasion of an exhibition about Adunis in 2000.

This article explores the workings of second-person pronoun forms in Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 post-apocalyptic novel The Road. More particularly, the analysis focuses on examples of ‘doubly deictic you’ (Herman, 2002), and demonstrates how the novel exploits the uncertain deictic, referential and address functions of this particular pronoun form to develop what I term a ‘post-apocalyptic poetics’, through which it attempts to explore – and enact – the spatial and temporal dislocations that ensue from the fictional apocalypse. The article also demonstrates how the novel’s indeterminate use of narrative you creates profound hermeneutical (and often ontological) uncertainty for readers, who must often suspend any attempt to fix the positions from and to which the story is addressed. McCarthy’s opaque use of the terms you and your throughout the novel creates profound polyphony and multivalence by preventing readers from clearly distinguishing the discourse and perspectives of protagonist...

L’invenzione del dialogo raccoglie una serie di testi letterari cristiani in lingua siriaca, di un genere in cui questa letteratura si distinse ed eccelse: l’innografia e la poesia piegate a esporre temi e motivi teologici, esegetici e sapienziali. Gli scritti debitamente introdotti e commentati mostrano la varietà di forme e contenuti che questi conobbero: dalla riflessione filosofica e teologica di Efrem, al ricamo narrativo ed esegetico di dialoghi immaginari tra personaggi della Bibbia o dell’agiografia, da Caino e Abele o Giuseppe e la moglie di Potifar, a Giuseppe e Maria o la peccatrice e Satana, fino ai contraddittori che in età cristiana riprendono e reinventano un genere mesopotamico antico: quello della disputa, ad esempio tra anima e corpo, tra i mesi, tra l’oro e il grano.

This research to find out and explain how controlling and evaluation management occur in the Intensive Program for Arabic Language (PKPBA) at the State Islamic University of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The background of this research is due to PKPBA UIN Malang is the only language center that organizes Arabic language learning for all new students from all majors, which indeed requires special handling. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The research method uses interview techniques, observation, and documentation in collecting data. The results showed that the controlling of a special Arabic language development program at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University was an internal controlling carried out by the head of program management, also included in external controlling carried out by the ministry of religion, including active controlling by looking at the program directly, and passive controlling by viewing teacher and student attendance lists, teaching journals, and other learning tools. As well as preventive and repressive controlling carried out to plan and implement the program so that it runs effectively and efficiently and controlling is also carried out after the learning activities are carried out to find out the results of the implementation of the program for further evaluation if there are deviations. While the program evaluation is conducted twice a year, this controlling and evaluation is carried out for continuous improvement which will be carried out every year for the development of the program.

The Influence of Arabic on Nigerian Literature: a study of selected works of Abubakar Imam in Hausa

Abstract
The heritage of a people is, without doubt, the bedrock of their identity. The sheer size of the Northern part of Nigeria makes it a very important part of the country. This vast region has been having a common identity forged by literacy in the Arabic language. For many centuries before the coming of the imperialists, Arabic provided universal understanding among people of the Northern Nigeria. It was so important that even the imperial agents studied Arabic language in order to penetrate the culture of the people of the area they wanted to colonize. When the foreign power eventually succeeded in enthroning its own language as the official language, Arabic still remains very visible not only as a religious language but also as a springboard for literary endeavors in both local and foreign languages of the North. This paper therefore intends to study the influence of Arabic on the Nigerian Literature using Magana Jari Ce and Ruwan Bagaja  by the renown Hausa writer, late Alhaji Abubakar Imam, as a case study. The paper is divided into: introduction, short biography of Abubakar Imam, Arabic influence on selected stories, general analysis of the stories, conclusion and recommendation.

Dove e da chi è parlato l'arabo? È vero che è una lingua sacra? Che i paesi arabi hanno un'unica lingua ufficiale e che questa però non coincide con quella realmente parlata? L'arabo, la cui scrittura va da destra a sinistra, è davvero così complesso? Pensato per chiunque si occupi di mondo arabo-musulmano, il volume - in questa nuova edizione riveduta e aggiornata - offre un profilo descrittivo generale della lingua araba: dalla sua diffusione al suo ruolo all'interno della civiltà islamica, dalle sue principali caratteristiche (scrittura, fonologia, morfosintassi) alle divergenze tra l'arabo ufficiale e l'arabo dialettale, per concludere con un rapido panorama delle dinamiche sociolinguistiche del mondo arabo contemporaneo.

The significance of the Arabic language holds back from its being one of the most explicit languages in its brilliance and its repeated ability to adapt to countless other sciences and knowledge. The Arabic language has reached creativity and originality in different fields of literature in which the greatest is poetry.
The paper aims at scrutinizing the figurative, rhetorical and aesthetic images in Lamiyyat Al Arab by Ash-Shanfara in which it follows the deductive, inductive critical approach focusing analytically on the first ten verses of the poem. Applying the historical-analytical method, the study attempts to reveal in the in-depth analysis of the aesthetic qualities and poetic issues as well as the figurative images in the poem. It commences with an introduction on Arabia and Poetic Language then moves to shed light on the protagonist-poet Ash-Shanfara as a great Arabic poet to be concluded with analysis and comments on the poem Lamiyyat Al-Arab trying to find out the original Arab values, morals, ethics, and tenets in the pre-Islam era it contains.

A fearsome, sword-slinging heroine who defeated countless men in stealth attacks on horseback, Dhat al-Himma, or Princess Fatima, was secretly given away at birth because she wasn't male, only to triumph as the most formidable warrior of her time. Arabic, like other highly inflected languages, encodes a large amount of information in its morphology and word structure. In this work, we propose two embedding strategies that modify the tokenization phase of traditional word embedding models (Word2Vec) and contextual word embedding models (BERT) to take into account Arabic's relatively complex morphology. In Word2Vec, we segment words into subwords during training time and then compose word-level representations from the subwords during test time. We train our embeddings on Arabic Wikipedia and show that they perform better than a Word2Vec model on multiple Arabic natural language processing datasets while being approximately 60% smaller in size. Moreover, we showcase our embeddings' ability to produce accurate representations of some out-of-vocabulary words that were not encountered before. In BERT, we modify the tokenization layer of Google's pretrained multilingual BERT model by incorporating information on morphology. By doing so, we achieve state of the art performance on two Arabic NLP datasets without pretraining.

In the Arabic grammatical tradition several categories comprising exactly five members can be found, e.g., the types of “meaningful things”, of definite nouns, of tanwīn, of definite article, of tawābiʿ etc. Given the importance of the number ‘five’ in Islam, it is natural to ask whether these categorizations are affected by the symbolical meaning of that number. This article examines some of these categorizations in order to check the extent to which they are linguistically or theoretically justified, and whether they use ‘five’ as a typological number. In order to answer these questions, the fivefold divisions are tested for consistency and the surrounding discourse is investigated.

This work presents a poetic translation as well as a linguistic and stylistic commentary in the form of annotations, of the Mu‘allaqât, the most famous anthology of pre-Islamic Arabic poetry, in its standard version (in order of translation: Antara, Imru' al-Qays, Tarafa, Zuhayr, 'Amr ibn Kulthûm, al-Hârith b. Hilliza, Labîd). Each poem is preceded by an introduction on the poet, the structure and thematic of the poem and the existing translations in the main European languages. The introduction offers an overview on the problems linked to the translation of these poems, with a special emphasis on their variation rather than their authenticity.
