Cyberactivism

....The concept of Cyberactivism has hit Kenya like a relentless wave as most Kenyans (especially the youths) have more times than not been able to use these social networking platforms for various purposes, such as awareness creation, gathering and organizing followers and initiating reactions and participating in national debates. The most popular of these efforts was the now infamous #OCCUPYPARLIAMENT  “uprising” which spread like wildfire on social media as Kenyans united to show their dislike for the members of parliament’s hefty allowances. Their efforts on social media climaxed with a street demonstration on May 14th which saw demonstrators pour animal blood outside parliament and release pigs [and piglets] on the outside of parliament as they tried blocking the members of parliament from entering the parliament building.

The wave of Arab revolutions and uprisings that has been shaking all corners of the Arab Middle East since 2011 and that has come to be known as the Arab Spring owed a major portion of its success to online activism. The spark that ignited these revolutions in the offline world was ignited by the Arab cyberactivists' well-coordinated campaigns, calling for the toppling of corrupt regimes in their home countries. These campaigns were launched through various forms of social media, such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Flicker with the goal of introducing drastic political changes and allowing for a higher margin of freedom in a region that has often been associated with autocracy and dictatorship. Three Arab countries in particular-Egypt, Tunisia and Libya-have witnessed sweeping transformations, leading to the ousting and court trials of members of their old regimes and the holding of democratic presidential and parliamentary elections. This study utilizes qualitative, on-the-field interviews with cyberactivists in these three countries to provide a unique perspective into how they have paved the way for a new era of openness and democratic reform in their respective countries.

Uma das mais importantes potencialidades da Web 2.0 é permitir a difusão de ideias em comum, unindo pessoas que defendam as mesmas causas, consilidando o ciberativismo nos últimos anos. No Brasil um dos maiores exemplos foram os movimentos de junho de 2013, que ainda ressoam pela Internet e faz com que grupos ativistas tentem novas formas de mobilização tão efeitvas quanto a do ano anterior. O objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar as publicações que possuam tons de humor (baseados no princípio do lulz, característico dos coletivos Anonymous mundialmente), realizadas no site de rede social Facebook próximo a jogos do Brasil na Copa do Mundo, a partir de quatro fan pages dos anons: AnonymousBrasil, Anonymous Brasil, AnonymousBr e Anonymous Rio.

Trolling has become an imperative feature of online communication. The boom of new media and innovative technologies has favoured this acceleration. Trolls hold an undeniable position in gauging public opinion and attitudes on almost every subject. With the advent of several Facebook troll communities, Malayalam speaking internet users have also started experimenting with this new genre of online communication. This study attempts to analyse the characteristics of Malayalam online troll communities. Troll posts from two popular Facebook groups are used for the purpose. The analysis has been done using both quantitative and qualitative content analysis, based on the form and content of the media texts produced by the trolls. It is seen that making use of unique production techniques and behavioural practices, trolls are developing themselves into a distinctive group of likeminded people. The trolls, in course of time, are evolving as a cyber-subculture over the networked societies of internet.

Se analizan las estrategias que desplegó la Campaña Nacional por el Derecho al Aborto Legal, Seguro y Gratuito en Twitter en 2018, en ocasión del primer debate legislativo en torno al proyecto de ley por la interrupción voluntaria del embarazo en Argentina. En el marco de la movilización reconocida mundialmente por su alcance y envergadura como la "marea verde", se generó un intenso ciberactivismo feminista por #abortolegal en el país. En el artículo se traza un mapa con hitos, modalidades y hashtags aglutinantes durante el proceso, focalizando en la plataforma Twitter, por la centralidad que adquirió en el debate público, a la vez que se analiza la respuesta generada desde sectores contrarios a la legalización del aborto. Los datos se recolectaron mediante técnicas de scraping.

The underlying faulty assumption that there is only one single form of feminism (i.e., Western feminism) that women have to universally emulate is highly problematic due to its ethnocentric underpinnings, which mask the rich diversities of women's lived realities as well as their competing subjectivities and the multiple feminism(s) they embrace and exhibit on many levels and through different manifestations (Moghadam 1994, 2003; Nazir 2005; Inglehart and Norris 2003). Negating the notion that there is a single, uniform, and standard type of feminism that can be universally and uncritically applied to women all over the world regardless of their distinctions and variations, this section sheds light on some of the unique particularities of the complex phenomenon of "Arab feminism(s)." It reveals how this complex phenomenon manifested itself in numerous ways and over several stages, which are reflective of Arab women's authentic culture and beliefs as well as their complex political, social, and cultural realities. It discusses how Arab women suffered from three layers of invisibility and participated in three types of struggles, and how their complex process of evolving "feminism(s)" was shaped over three consecutive phases. By doing so, it sheds light on how Arab women's feminism(s), activism(s) a,nd resistance(s) cross-cut different boundaries, binaries, and dichotomies. Este pequeño ensayo pretende reflexionar críticamente sobre las trasformaciones sociales debidas a los medios digitales que están cambiando profundamente nuestras sociedades. Este trabajo está dividido en dos partes. En la primera parte realizo un sucinto recorrido por la historia de la Red, haciendo un especial énfasis en la paralela evolución del activismo digital. En la segunda parte, proporcionaré algunas reflexiones acerca de la evolución de la Red y de los paralelos cambios experimentados en el entorno del activismo, tanto desde el punto de vista conceptual como metodológico.

Since the events of the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street took place largely through the Web using social networking and mobile devices, the concept of "cyberactivism" has become a popular topic of discussion and criticism within the media and academia. Cyberactivism, also referred to as web-based or digital activism, focuses on the use of technology to participate in political activism. Within cyberactivist scholarship, there is a focus on "digital natives"-youth who have grown up surrounded by and immersed in technology-and how they use technology for political means. Subsequently, those who used technology later in life are referred to as "digital immigrants." In this study (n = 305), participants were surveyed on their digital activist habits. The data allowed for an examination of the specific outlets of cyberactivism and the current political and technological climates that support that behavior. The findings, for which a Chi square statistical analysis was used, compare habits between age groups, revealing generational differences in the use of web-based tools. In particular, digital natives are more likely to use the internet to engage in political discussion and activity, but they do so passively. Digital immigrants, however, see the web in more of a supporting role for their activism, as they use web-based tools to emphasize the use of in-person action and discussion.

Sarea ekintza eremu berria bihurtu da azken urteotan eta aldaketa sozial, kultural, ekonomiko, legal eta politikorako aukerak sortu ditu (Mimenza, 2014: 16). Teknologien eskuragarritasunak elkarren artean konektatutako pertsona taldeak sortu ditu, momentu jakinetan “legio” aktibista bihurtu daitezkeelarik. Era berean, tresna berriak eskuragarri izateak balio eta dinamiketan aldaketak sortu ditu mugimendu sozialetan. Izan ere, teknologia ez da tresna bat bakarrik, medio bat da (Tascón eta Quintana, 2012: 112). Bart Cammaerts-ek (2013) azpimarratzen duen moduan, sareak, aktibistak euren artean komunikatzeko aukerak hobetu ditu, diskurtso alternatiboak zabaltzetik harago, identitate kolektiboen eraikuntzan lagunduz, offline-online sareak sortuz eta bertan garatutako protestak erraztuz.

Remedios Zafrak (2005: 316) aipatu bezala, pribatua dena publikatzen ez bada, hau da, publiko egiten ez bada, ikustezin bihurtuko da, munduari dagokionez deuseztatua, ezabatua.

Através de um estudo do Movimento Brasil Livre (MBL) no pós-impeachment de Dilma Rousseff, a dissertação analisa o ativismo político nas redes sociais virtuais – o ciberativismo. O MBL notabilizou-se, em 2015 e 2016, por comandar protestos que levaram milhões de pessoas às ruas e influenciaram na queda do Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) da Presidência da República. Os objetivos principais do trabalho são compreender como o ciberativismo se institucionalizou na política, de que forma o MBL atua depois do impeachment e como as práticas ciberativistas passaram da guerrilha à industrialização no Brasil. São analisadas 102 publicações da fanpage do movimento no Facebook em três períodos do ano de 2017: nas duas denúncias da Justiça contra o Presidente da República, Michel Temer, por corrupção e outros crimes; e na absolvição do senador Aécio Neves, do PSDB, pelos colegas parlamentares, que rejeitaram decisão do Supremo Tribunal Federal que o afastara do Congresso Nacional por tentar obstruir a Justiça na Operação Lava Jato. O método aplicado foi a Análise Textual Discursiva (ATD), que resultou em metatextos, que sintetizam o âmago do ciberativismo praticado pelo MBL. Debatemos as transformações do ciberespaço, as características da nova sociedade em rede, as redes sociais virtuais e a ascensão do ciberativismo, além de temas como bolhas de filtros, algoritmos obscuros, fake news e monopólio da internet. O ciberativismo, que emerge sintonizado com os ideais de resgate da independência e da liberdade, almejados pelos criadores da internet, revela-se também um instrumento para a propagação de ódio, manipulação e mentiras, e para o acirramento de radicalismos, ocupando, portanto, um papel central em estudos de cibercultura e de movimentos sociais.

Este trabalho apresenta o advento do WikiLeaks e enfatiza o seu papel na luta pela transparência de informação na Internet. Atualmente, o WikiLeaks é usado tanto como um destino de compartilhamento de documentos como uma fonte de informação para estabelecer
uma ação estratégica contra a guerra do sigilo. Na Era da Informação, discute-se a confidencialidade dos recursos de tecnologia digital contra questões de interesses diplomáticos por parte dos governos. A contribuição do WikiLeaks no episódio Cablegate, abriu debates em torno da utilização de ferramentas alternativas de tecnologia digital e do jornalismo tradicional com táticas de ativismo na internet, causando mudanças na técnica e ética jornalística. Desde então, o WikiLeaks se tornou um ator crucial no atual cenário do jornalismo investigativo.

La emergencia del ciberactivismo como una traslación
de la acción política no convencional en el contexto de las tecnologías
de la información y la comunicación plantea al menos tres
cuestiones. La definición, delimitación y clasificación del mismo
concepto. El segundo aspecto que suscita el ciberactivismo es de
carácter teórico al plantear las siguientes perspectivas antitéticas:
¿Provoca o no la aparición de las TIC en la esfera política un
aumento de la cultura cívica? Pregunta que lleva a Pippa Norris
a distinguir entre las teorías de la movilización y las teorías del
refuerzo. Finalmente, surge la necesidad de diseñar instrumentos
y estudios que procuran en parte una evaluación y medida del
fenómeno del ciberactivismo tal y como lo lleva a cabo el estudio
bianual The Internet in Britain o los trabajos de la Universidad del
Sur de California a través del Center for the Digital Future. Tras esta
revisión, desarrollaremos propuestas conceptuales y metodológicas
para medir dicho fenómeno

Cyberactivism has emerged as a transposition of unconventional political action to the context of information and communication technologies. This phenomenon raises at least three questions. The first is the definition, delineation and classification of the concept. The second is that of the theoretical perspectives from which to answer questions such as: does the emergence of ICTs in the public sphere enhance civic culture or not? This question led to Pippa Norris to distinguish between mobilization theories and theories of reinforcement. Finally, there is a need to design tools and studies with which to attempt to evaluate and measure the phenomenon, as proposed by the biannual study entitled The Internet in Britain and in the work of the University of Southern California through the Center for the Digital Future. Following this review, we develop a new definition of cyberactivism and propose some instrument to measure the phenomenon.

If you have honor and dignity as a man, come … If you stay home, you deserve what will happen to you … and you'll be guilty, before your nation and your people … Go down to the street, send SMSs, post it post it on the 'net. Make people aware … It will make a difference, a big difference … never say there's no hope … so long you come down with us, there will be hope … don't think you can be safe any more! None of us are! Come down with us and demand your rights my rights, your family's rights."

La revolución de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) ha configurado un espacio virtual de interacción social, económica, cultural, política e institucional de alcance global y con un efecto democratizador y de eliminación de distancias físicas. Al mismo tiempo que esta red inter-comunicativa se desarrollaba, la tecnología de las TICs evolucionaba y se acoplaba a diversos dispositivos para la gestión y monitorización de actividades públicas o privadas, civiles o militares y para la comunicación en general. Si bien esta evolución tecnológica ha facilitado las tareas diarias de los usuarios, la conexión de los dispositivos a la red ha abierto el acceso de intrusos a información sensible. La transformación del ciberespacio en una dimensión imprescindible para la actividad diaria del ciudadano, la gestión de negocios o la provisión de servicios públicos esenciales ha generado una realidad más a proteger por parte de los estados y de aplicación de sanciones legales ante la comisión de delitos en el uso de la red. Esta dependencia respecto al ciberespacio ha llevado a los gobiernos a planificar y ejecutar estrategias de ciberseguridad para la protección de sus intereses frente a la versatilidad de los ciberataques. La existencia de estrategias de seguridad exclusivos para este nuevo espacio de la realidad demuestra la relevancia de la cuestión que se aborda a continuación.

This paper focuses on four popular UK based, desi food blogs by Anjali Pathak, Hari Ghotra, Mallika Basu, and Chintal Kakaya, who are ambassadors of the global justice charity Find Your Feet's (FYF) ‘Curry for Change’ (CFC) campaign. Reconfiguring and challenging geographical parameters and national boundaries, the bloggers team up with FYF to help fight hunger in African and Asian rural communities. Using the Internet as a platform to create awareness about the charity, the blogs share recipes and meal plans for dinner parties hosted in honour of the charity and invite the public to fundraising events. Concerned with human rights, these bloggers affect social change by empowering individuals and communities to participate in civic engagement, and occasionally to even challenge unfair government policies/practices. The blogs’ efficacy can also be measured through the funds raised, the public attention they receive from channels such as Indian food network and London Live, local/regional newspapers such as the London Evening Standard, and magazines like India's Complete Wellbeing Magazine. Food blogs that actively contribute to global justice movements cannot be seen as domestic reflections or exercises in nostalgia anymore. Referring to Habermas's notion of the public sphere and Nancy Fraser's concept of the transnational public sphere, I examine these food blogs as transnational public spheres. Based on textual analysis of blog entries related specifically to the CFC campaign and an examination of FYF's annual reviews, this paper examines how these food blogs have expanded in form and function by engaging in cyberactivism.

Neste artigo temos por objetivo principal apresentar tópicos da obra O Ateísmo no Brasil: os sentidos da descrença nos séculos XX e XXI, de Ricardo Oliveira da Silva, historiador e professor da UFMS (campus de Nova Andradina). Os tópicos que selecionamos para apresentar e comentar foram: "As definições de ateísmo" (2020, p. 14-17); "O ateísmo na historiografia brasileira" (p. 17-29); "O ateísmo materialista na obra de intelectuais comunistas brasileiros" (p. 129-138); "A criação da Revista Ateísta" (p. 198-218); e "Ateísmo e feminismo" (p. 215-218). Como se pode notar, as discussões desta produção perpassam por definições de ateísmo; pela construção historiográfica desse ateísmo; pela chegada desse pensamento ateísta no Brasil; como as pesquisas nacionais estão lidando com essa temática do ateísmo; o movimento ateísta organizado e a criação de meios de divulgação, como revistas e sites; a questão feminina na educação científica e no ateísmo. Para cada um desses temas, criamos tópicos próprios, que serão comentados em nossas considerações no final deste artigo.

In this paper I explore how uniquely Palestinians are using the digital world for grass-root non-violent resistance and activism. And I address the question of whether they jumped in to the bandwagon of the Arab Spring snowball of social media or they started earlier. Palestinians aptly thrive through the digital world, just like the last Kuffiyeh Company in Palestine, which represents a non-violent resistance dynamic, is thriving through marketing online. And like the last Olive Trees Palestinians tie themselves to. I also point how and why for two decades would cyberactivism, digital cameras, and citizen journalism be special to Palestinians compared to its neighboring countries. I do this by both interviewing and analyzing specific popular social network accounts, sites, and online activists who posses high outreach, both in English (targeting international crowds) or in Arabic (targeting more local crowds).

Del ciberactivismo a la tecnopolítica. Movimientos sociales en la era del escepticismo tecnológico explica cómo en los últimos años se han producido profundas transformaciones en los modos en que los movimientos sociales han negociado el uso de la tecnología digital, así como los cambios acaecidos en torno a la teorización de dicha relación, los márgenes de acción de los movimientos sociales en la política institucional o las dinámicas de funcionamiento de la cultura digital en un entorno dominado por las redes sociodigitales comerciales. Del ciberactivismo a la tecnopolítica. Movimientos sociales en la era del escepticismo tecnológico deja registro del alcance de algunas de estas transformaciones con un doble objetivo:

1. Evidenciar de forma crítica la transformación del terreno de juego tecnopolítico y la manera en que dicho terreno está siendo abordado desde la academia.

2. Fomentar perspectivas académicas comprometidas con el cambio social, frente al creciente paradigma cuantitativo, aséptico, que renuncia a posicionarse mediante despliegues metodológicos más aparentes que científicos.

This feminist, qualitative study sheds light on how young Arab women used cyberactivism to participate in the wave of political and social transformations widely known as the Arab Spring. It argues that these activists leveraged social media to enact new forms of leadership, agency, and empowerment, since these online platforms enabled them to express themselves freely and their voices to be heard by the rest of the world, particularly the global media. This resulted in a multidimensional personal, social, political, and communicative revolution. This study is based on in-depth, personal interviews with more than twenty young Arab women citizen journalists, bloggers, and activists from Arab countries that witnessed political upheaval.

Considerando que os estudos no campo comunicacional, no Brasil, estão cada vez mais atentos à reflexão teórico-conceitual acerca do ciberativismo – dentro de um escopo geral de perceptível proliferação de trabalhos –, verifica-se, entretanto, que pouco repercutem em investigações sobre as iniciativas ciberativistas que envolvem as lutas políticas por direitos LGBT. Nessa direção, questiona-se como a emergência de iniciativas ciberativistas centradas na representação política LGBT contribui para a consolidação das demandas do movimento e, por consequência, para o aprofundamento da democracia. Ancora-se na definição de ciberativismo como referente às múltiplas práticas de sujeitos coletivos e individuais operadas em e nas redes de comunicação digital distribuída que objetivam a defesa de determinadas causas para promover mudanças na sociedade que favoreçam a vivência comum, recorrendo à circulação de ideias e de possibilidades técnicas (ferramentas) para engendrar formas de participação e intervenção. Dessa forma, toma-se, como balizadores teóricos, discussões que compreendem a história do movimento LGBT, as noções conceituais do ciberativismo bem como da representação política. Partindo de uma abordagem qualitativa e procedimento monográfico (estudo de caso), objetiva-se compreender a atuação da iniciativa #VoteLGBT, desenvolvida em e nas redes de comunicação digital distribuída, ao longo das eleições nacionais de 2014 e 2016. Para tal fim, apoiando-se na observação direta, delimita-se como amostra os sites desenvolvidos pela iniciativa em ambos os períodos eleitorais e os conteúdos veiculados na página dela no site de rede social Facebook; a partir da observação indireta, emprega-se também a técnica de entrevista com integrantes da campanha. Para a leitura dos dados, recorre-se à análise descritiva e à análise de conteúdo. Conclui-se que a iniciativa #VoteLGBT adota como principal estratégia comunicativa o emprego de recursos voltados para a sensibilização e convocação (chamada à ação) dos eleitores, através de conteúdos cujos significados refletem a dimensão e legitimidade das suas pautas e dos debates que as cingem, ao mesmo tempo que demonstram a importância do envolvimento com os processos institucionais de participação (as eleições) e o reflexo disso no aumento substantivo da representação política LGBT. Também desenvolve e disponibiliza ferramentas sociais digitais que auxiliam os eleitores e candidatos através da aproximação de ambas as dimensões, civil e política, em uma mesma ambiência.

The latest social movements of the second decade of
this century have recently highlighted the image of teenage activists such as the paradigmatic case of Greta Thunberg. These teen activists engage in their activism through social media. Following an analysis of a dozen listings in books and websites of young and teenage activists, 38 teenage cyber-activists have been identified who at least have a Twitter or Instagram accounts. The main results point to a female profile and environmental causes. Another notable finding is the predominance of Instagram, which doubles the number of followers and macroinfluencers of Twitter.  These adolescent experiences of digital activism can be a good model and pedagogical tool for education on critical and active digital citizenship.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo compreender como se dá a construção de identidade coletiva no site/coletivo transfeminismo.com, percebendo a criação de definições cognitivas do conflito e do “nós”, o investimento emocional e a rede ativa de relacionamentos. Com isso se objetivou atinar para a pertinência do conceito de identidade coletiva para o estudo do ciberativismo, salientando suas possibilidades e  peculiaridades. Definido o ciberativismo como a utilização da internet pelos movimentos sociais, coube analisar como se perfaz essa relação. No estudo específico do transfeminismo.com o conceito de identidade coletiva foi operacionalizado no exame do site transfeminismo.com, do grupo do Facebook “Transfeminismo <3” e das interações com outros blogs/sites (Blogueiras Feministas, Geledés e Escreva, Lola, Escreva). Assim se observou que a publicação de textos no site funciona como produção de um enquadramento delimitado, que forja uma unidade identitária e também exclusões na construção do “nós”. O grupo no Facebook mostrou pouco debate, mas variadas formas de postagens que criam afetividade entre os indivíduos que o compõem. As interações com outros blogs/sites evidenciam relações de solidariedade e de disputa entre os sujeitos ciberativistas. Finalmente, conclui-se com uma reflexão sobre a importância do site/coletivo transfeminismo.com enquanto contrapúblico interconectado a inserir-se na esfera pública virtual e o papel do anonimato na fabricação da identidade coletiva transfeminista por meio do ciberativismo.

Hacktivism, a portmanteau of “hacking” and “activism”, indicates the politically motivated use of technical expertise like coding. It addresses network infrastructure or exploits the infrastructure’s technical and ontological features for political or social change: activists seek to fix society through software and online action. Recent example of hacktivism include Anonymous, an online community whose self-identified members engage in disruptive activities using electronic civil disobedience techniques in support of digital freedoms. Hacktivism is a highly contested concept, and different groups of people associate different objectives and tactics under its umbrella, not all of which are compatible. With this contention in mind, this chapter explores the main features of hacktivism as a radical media practice. It offers a historical overview of the phenomenon, and a sociological analysis of hacktivist organizational patterns. It explores hacktivists’ tactics and their approach to institutions and social norms, and the challenges that hacktivism faces in the present and near future, touching upon issues of repression, accountability, and impact.

Occupy Wall Street, el movimiento 15M y la primavera árabe son los movimientos sociales contemporáneos que más poder de movilización han tenido y que más influencia han causado en las políticas públicas de sus respectivos países. Estos tres movimientos tienen en común, además de la naturaleza de sus exigencias e inconformismo político, que se han servido de las TICS y en particular de las redes
sociales, para la gestación y organización de sus grupos y actuaciones y para la difusión de ideas y movilización de la sociedad. El ciberactivismo entendido como acción política en la red ha sido determinante en el desarrollo de los últimos movimientos sociales de gran repercusión social y política, desde el impulso a determinadas políticas de carácter económico y social hasta la caída del gobierno. Las TICs y especialmente redes sociales como Twitter y Facebook
proporcionan a las antiguas audiencias las herramientas necesarias no solo para la difusión de información de manera masiva, sino también para generar diálogo y debate.
Este trabajo pretende establecer el mapa de la investigación en España sobre el ciberactivismo y los movimientos sociales urbanos contemporáneos. Para ello se analizan las diez revistas de mayor índice de impacto durante los últimos cinco años, por considerarse los lugares de publicación más visibles, rigurosos y prestigiosos en la investigación de ciencias sociales. La revisión incluye las publicaciones relativas a Occupy Wall Street, Primavera Árabe, 15M, ciberactivismo y participación.
El objetivo es obtener un mapa exhaustivo de la situación del panorama científico en relación a los términos ciberactivismo y movimientos sociales que nos permita identificar las carencias, líneas de investigación seguidas y conclusiones de estas.

This chapter foregrounds the role of an emerging movement of young migrant workers, and especially their tactical communications, in contesting the global system of capitalism in China's export industries. Producing much of the world's high-and low-end products, from Apple iphones and Honda cars, to Pepsi-Cola and jeans, the young workers are wielding an array of on-and off-web communications to protest for higher wages, better working conditions and dignity, and to create a new collective identity for themselves. Beginning with a review of the role of new information and communications technologies in China's rapid transformation to a global capitalist state, I show the roots of this current cycle of worker contention in the "unmaking" or decomposition of the older industrial working class, and the "making" or recomposition of a new working class of migrants from rural China. I then review the tactical repertoires of the younger generation of migrant workers, their allied groups in China and Hong Kong, and the recent transnational solidarity campaigns.

This article aims to provide benchmarks for structuring a classification of the most important communication behaviors of modern cyberactivism, particularly around social networks. Although cyberactivism is a complex social phenomenon utilizing the Internet as its main communication tool, a number of recurrent aspects allow for the identification of at least three major types of methods through which modern cyber-activism spreads and defends the validity of their ideals: civic methods, carried out by the netizen; hostile methods, realized by hacktivists; and methods of psychological harassment, put into practice by cyber harassment activists. Each of these methods, at the same time, combines strategies that adequate and synchronize with the communicational characteristics of the digital platforms where cyberactivism operates, whose use depends to a great extent on the favorable results they produce. Also, the analysis of this scenario has allowed to isolate a set of evidence suggesting that modern cyberactivism uses communication strategies based on psychological and subliminal knowledge to: 1) influence the opinion of social networks users in favor of the ideals of the activists; 2) obtain financial support and attract new supporters; 3) stimulate the relationship among the members of the activist groups; 4) delegitimize criticism through propaganda; 5) discourage counter-activist actions through harassment tactics; and 6) conquer social networks imposing a certain "activist hegemony." In this context, various bibliographical, journalistic and digital sources of information have been evaluated to support this article. However, digital information sources have been privileged because of the rapid development of cyberactivism experiments, which is caused by the constant generation of new insights from numerous academic communities that make efforts to produce state-of-the-art information to assist in the understanding of this social phenomenon through the introduction of a myriad of approaches, concepts and theories. It should also be noted that despite this choice, all sources of information evaluated have also been identified, sorted, classified, compared and carefully registered. This process has produced a series of unexpected results, such as the notion that modern cyberactivism tends to mask many of its activities in social networks.

Neste artigo temos por objetivo principal apresentar tópicos da obra O Ateísmo no Brasil: os sentidos da descrença nos séculos XX e XXI, de Ricardo Oliveira da Silva, historiador e professor da UFMS (campus de Nova Andradina). Os tópicos que selecionamos para apresentar e comentar foram: “As definições de ateísmo” (2020, p. 14-17); “O ateísmo na historiografia brasileira” (p. 17-29); “O ateísmo materialista na obra de intelectuais comunistas brasileiros” (p. 129-138); “A criação da Revista Ateísta” (p. 198-218); e “Ateísmo e feminismo” (p. 215-218). Como se pode notar, as discussões desta produção perpassam por definições de ateísmo; pela construção historiográfica desse ateísmo; pela chegada desse pensamento ateísta no Brasil; como as pesquisas nacionais estão lidando com essa temática do ateísmo; o movimento ateísta organizado e a criação de meios de divulgação, como revistas e sites; a questão feminina na educação científica e no ateísmo. Para cada um desses temas, criamos tópico...

São diversos os espaços de militância feminista, mas um em especial tem despontado como locus do transfeminismo no Brasil: o ciberespaço. O transfeminismo.com, site surgido em 2011, tornou-se um coletivo e uma fonte de informações sobre o feminismo direcionado às questões trans. Nesta plataforma produz-se identidade coletiva por meio de investimentos emocionais, uma rede ativa de relacionamentos e a criação de definições cognitivas do conflito e do " nós ". Articulam-se conceitos como "cisgeneridade" e demandas como a despatologização das identidades trans numa intrincada elaboração sobre a opressão específica sofrida pelas pessoas trans (transfobia) e os caminhos feministas para sua resolução, que perpassam por um enfrentamento dos sistemas médico e jurídico. Aliando-se e afastando-se de outros expoentes do ciberfeminsmo brasileiro, o transfeminismo tece sua rede de relações. E num grupo do Facebook podem ser observadas as interações entre as militantes. Com esse trabalho que apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa de mestrado pretende-se utilizar o conceito de identidade coletiva, advindo da sociologia dos movimentos sociais, para aplicação no estudo do ciberativismo e, neste caso, do ciberfeminismo.

This thesis presents a study of how identification, according to Kenneth Burke's theory, can be observed in the media-related practices promoted by the cyber-activist collective Anonymous. Identification is the capacity of community-building through the use of shared interests. Burke affirms that, as human beings are essentially social, identification is the very aim of any human interaction. Cyber-activism deeply relies on this capacity to promote and legitimise its campaigns. In the case of Anonymous, the collective became extremely popular and is now a frequent presence even in street protests, usually organised online, around the world. Here, I argue that this power was possible through the use of identification, which helped attract a large number of individuals to the collective. Anonymous was particularly skilled in its capacity to create an ideology for each campaign, which worked well to set up a perfect enemy who should be fought against by any people, despite their demographic or social status. Other forms of identification were also present and important. Although it is impossible to measure how many people or what kind of people Anonymous has been attracting, the presence of identification as a strong phenomenon is undeniable, since the collective is now one of the most famous cyber-activist organisations.

This article examines the changing role of cyberactivists before and after the Jasmine Revolution through case studies of three prominent figures: Houssem Aoudi (Cogite, Wasaibi), Sami Ben Gharbia (Nawaat.org), and Haythem el Mekki (MosaiqueFM, Attessia TV). The main argument presented here is that the attainment of freedom of the Internet and the success of the revolt created new opportunities for formal political involvement for the cyberactivists as they transited from dissidents under the Ben Ali regime to citizen-participants of a nascent democratic order. A subsidiary argument is that a new generation of Tunisian leadership came to the fore of Tunisia’s private and public spheres to advance the stated aims of the revolution, including inter alia combating unemployment, securing civil liberties, stemming corruption, and the ever deepening of pro-democracy reforms.

Este artículo aborda los dispositivos de difusión animalista, entendidos como medios de circulación de contenidos político e ideológico anti especistas, que configuraron las subjetividades animalistas en el Ecuador. Para ello, se utiliza un marco analítico que imbrica, por un lado, la sociología de las emociones en la acción colectiva y la tecnopolítica; y, por otro lado, los estudios foucaultianos sobre subjetivación ético-política. Esta investigación se inscribe en el campo de los Estudios Críticos Animales Latinoamericanos. Se realizaron veinte entrevistas a profundidad a activistas veganos/as, 12 varones y 8 mujeres. La investigación determina el cyberactivismo animalista, a través de documentales que visibilizan la explotación animal; la transnacionalización de la cultura-política antiespecista, con base en la influencia de oenegés internacionales y congresos; el movimiento punk y los espacios de espiritualidad de Oriente como los principales dispositivos de difusión.

Neste texto, dedicado ao escritor Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel, destaca-se a sua posição no campo da literatura da Guiné Equatorial, por se tratar do escritor crítico da ditadura de Teodoro Obiang com mais visibilidade internacional que vive no país, circunstância que ganha contornos mais marcados devido ao seu ciberativismo.

HACKTIVIST CULTURE AND VIOLENCE 2 Hacktivist Culture and the Concept of Violence Between the years 2007-2012, 16 people were arrested and charged with violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act for advocating and participating in distributed denial of service attacks (DDOS). These attacks have been used by myriad groups since the early 1990s to temporarily shut down websites. The 16 individuals who have been arrested for DDOS were all associated with political activist groups, and their cases have led to a discussion about DDOS

The entry discusses social media as a safe space, how social media encourages self-reflexivity, the role social media plays in promoting identity development, prompting cyberactivism, and initiating cyberbullying.

A atividade  de  hackers  não  é  algo  recente  e  tampouco  é  um  fenômeno  isolado. Assim,  a  tecnologia  que  consegue  “acelerar”  o  tempo  com  suas  novidades  e atualizações,  serviu  de  trampolim  para  grupos  desejosos  de  passar  sua  mensagem  para o  maior  número  de  pessoas,  unindo  indivíduos  das  mais  variadas  nacionalidades  e pontos  de  vista  sob  a  bandeira  de  uma  causa  a  ser  debatida  ou  defendida.  Desde  2008, a  ação  de  hacktivistas  se  tornou  algo  popular  e  causador  de  controvérsias  em  todas  as áreas  da  sociedade,  e  grupos  como  WikiLeaks  e  Anonymous  ocuparam  a  mídia  de maneira  bem  visível.  Todavia,  as  ações  desses  grupos  estremeceram  as  bases  de muitos  Estados,  causando  insegurança  quanto  aos  sistemas  de  informática  e  à proteção  de  informações  sigilosas,  estabelecendo  um  novo  conceito:  ciberterrorismo, algo  que,  durante  a  década  de  1990,  serviu  de  enredo  para  filmes  e  seriados,  mas  que, atualmente, parece ser cada vez mais real, concretizando o temor da ciberguerra.

Este artículo aborda la experiencia del movimiento social #YoSoy132, a partir de la exploración de su surgimiento en el contexto político, social y mediático mexicano y del análisis de sus características, demandas y paralelismos con los nuevos movimientos sociales globales. Además, el artículo problematiza el papel de los medios digitales –en particular de las redes sociales– dentro del movimiento, rompiendo con cinco narrativas dominantes en la literatura. Finalmente, se realiza un balance de los alcances y de las limitaciones de #YoSoy132.
