Les tableaux présentés dans 'L’Œuvre' (1886) de Zola ont été maintes fois commentés. Cependant l’évolution artistique du personnage principal, Claude Lantier, reste peu explorée. En effet le personnage de Zola traverse des périodes diverses qui peuvent être clairement définies : naturalisme, impressionnisme, réalisme moderne (actualisme) et finalement symbolisme. Pourquoi cette évolution artistique de l’artiste imaginaire ? Est-ce pour utiliser le roman comme extension de la critique d’art de l’auteur ou pour tracer une histoire de l’art de son époque ? Est-ce pour marquer la décadence héréditaire et le génie incomplet de Lantier ? Est-ce par soucis réaliste d’ancrer son personnage dans la réalité artistique de son temps ? Est-ce pour se donner l’occasion d’expérimenter différents types d’écriture picturale ? Ou est-ce une simple excuse pour nourrir un débat essentiellement littéraire ? Nous nous proposons ici de revisiter et d’analyser ces tableaux inspirés de tableaux réels ou complètement imaginaires pour tenter d’apporter des éléments de réponses à ces questions.

The paintings presented in Zola’s Masterpiece (1886) have been many times commented upon and analysed. However, the artistic evolution of the main character, Claude Lantier, has attracted very little attention. Zola’s character goes through diverse periods that can clearly be defined: naturalism, impressionism, modern realism (‘actualism’) and finally symbolism. Why does Zola present this fictional artistic evolution to his readers ? Is it to use the novel as an extension of his art criticism or to portray contemporary art history ? Is it to show Lantier’s hereditary decadence and incomplete genius ? Is it a realist process to anchor his character in the artistic reality of his time ? Is it to experiment with different types of pictorial writing ? Or is it simply an excuse to fuel what is a mostly literary debate? In this article we revisit and analyse the real or imaginary paintings presented by Zola to try to bring elements of answer to these questions.

Artists’ libraries. Apprenticeship, knowledge in the making, artists’ reading in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Study day, July 12, 2017

Research on artists’ reading practices in the long nineteenth century intersperses with the narrative of the waning Academic system and the rising literature of manuals targeted to artists, allowing a window on art history sources from the point of view of their producers - and recipients. The issue on artists’ reading practices, already addressed for the early modern period, is barely investigated by modern art history scholarship, besides the more rich amount of documents conserved. This approach not only offers a twofold perspective on artists’ artistic/literary apprenticeship, but can also reveal new and perhaps unexpected information on knowledge processes in this particular category of readers.
The main focus of this study is on the texts, so far mostly considered for the pictures helpful to detect the artist’s creative imagery. Art histories, literary and philosophical-theoretical texts, technical manuals and treatises read and written or edited by artists are not only sources useful to the historian and scholar of Quellengeschichte, but can tell us something more on the Künstlerwissen, on the modes of structuring and ‘disciplining’ culture in this particular sort of reader.
By reconstructing artists’ libraries and their catalogue, by investigating the purchases and loans of the libraries of the Academies of Fine Arts, is it possible to identify a canon, some constants, some repeated requests revealing core interests in the artists-readers?
Which are the peculiarities of these collections of books? Which the selection criteria, and if there are some, can they be confronted to artists’ private art collecting? Or, for the readers’ experimental and curious attitude, to their ‘pre-scientific’ collecting of artefacts and objects belonging to the Wunderkammer sphere?
Can the artist’s knowledge, his education, the way he reads (noting, transcribing), its resulting in new literary forms tell us something new on the artist and his being organic to his culture and time? In what means his reading is different to that of a scholar? What do notes and marginalia on books and copybooks reveal us of an artist-reader’s attitude?
Also, as we can identify in the painter’s studio the typologies of the atelier-salle de travail and the atelier-salon, is there a gap between the library for the everyday use and the library ‘for the show’? Which sort of choices does this distinction reflect?
The artist self-representing himself as a reader not only invites us to consider his changed intellectual status as a socio-cultural and historic phenomenon, but he shows us the texts, gives us hints on his theoretical imagery, and, before the critic takes on this task, draws himself our attention on the value of his metier.
Investigating on the modes, times and practices of the artist’s reading may be a way to get into his mental laboratory, to better understand his theoretical/practical horizon. The dialogue and the shared readings among artists (documented by correspondence, loans, exchanges) can give further hints for not always predictable connections.

Pour cette cinquième édition, la galerie Colbert ouvre à nouveau ses portes au grand public. Lieu historique conservant la mémoire du XIXe siècle et de ses fameux « passages », elle héberge depuis 2001 la plupart des établissements d’enseignement et de recherche d’Île-de-France en histoire de l’art, ainsi que l’Institut national du patrimoine, permettant de renforcer la communauté scientifique de l’histoire des arts, en tissant des liens entre chercheurs confirmés et doctorants, ainsi que la coopération internationale.

Selon le principe de cette journée, une œuvre a été choisie pour fédérer les réflexions et nourrir les débats, un chef-d’œuvre de l’art européen qui a durablement marqué l’imaginaire des artistes et des créateurs : la tenture de la Dame à la Licorne.

Les multiples sujets que l'on peut aborder à partir de cette œuvre vont bien au-delà de l'intérêt que les concepteurs et réalisateurs portèrent à la tenture : l’allégorie des cinq sens, celle des six vertus courtoises du Roman de la Rose, le riche symbolisme de l’iconographie, la question du métier, sans oublier la représentation de la féminité. Ils concernent non seulement toute l'histoire de l’art, depuis l’iconographie antique des êtres fabuleux ou de la représentation de la féminité jusqu'à Gustave Moreau, Mapplethorpe, Rebecca Horne ou Grégoire Solotareff, mais aussi le spectacle vivant de Gaëlle Bourges ainsi que toutes les pratiques artistiques : peinture, architecture, sculpture, arts décoratifs, théâtre et opéra, musique, photographie, cinéma, vidéo, performance.

A mon seul désir convoque les six panneaux de la série de tapisseries connue sous le nom de La Dame à la licorne, qui présente une jeune fille et une licorne entourées d’animaux et de fleurs – vraisemblablement une allégorie des cinq sens augmentée d’un sixième, resté assez mystérieux. Mais les licornes sont aussi réputées terriblement sauvages, ne se laissant approcher que par de jeunes vierges. Le travail insiste donc plutôt sur un des points centraux de l’histoire de l’art européen : la représentation de la virginité des femmes, ou de leur non virginité puisque, Vierge Marie oblige, il y a au cours des siècles comme une oscillation entre déflorations et non déflorations, ce qui revient finalement au même : on n’est jamais tranquille.
