This paper describes the importance of innovation and creativity by showcasing how innovation and creativity can be promoted within a company. The paper makes reference to scholarly material to support content and context in which companies leverage on creativity and innovation to maintain a competitive advantage in the market using various communication techniques, models for managing creativity and innovations and tools to instigate change in an organization.

Final years design students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, are often presented with a pool of topics that they can select from to work on their major/final course project. Some students struggle first with making this choice and then, after the work is submitted, marked and the degree is completed, with the frustration of leaving such projects behind and totally inconsequential. This may happen because the student is not oriented towards reflecting on how each of the possible topics to choose from can become a more or less impactful project during the remainder of their studies, for their professional development and future employability, and in terms of supporting/helping a wider community, by solving a problem common to many. In 'The taming of emotions' I described how, during the middle ages, the first guild associations struggled to discipline our more spontaneous and fierce impulses. In later centuries our early industrialists experienced great difficulty to control violence, abuse of alcohol, raving, obscene language and sexual intercourse in their factories. In our days these impulses, or rather their more offensive and outrageous manifestations, may have been tamed but what happened with the underlying drives and emotions. What happened with jealousy, disappointment, triumph, anger, sexual attraction, resentful gossip and power games? Have modern offices and factories now become graveyards of emotional tranquility and neutrality?

In recent years, the way corporates innovate has changed significantly. Going from 'behind closed doors' innovation to open innovation where collaboration with outsiders is encouraged, companies are in the pursuit of more effective ways to accelerate their innovation outcomes. As a result, many companies are investing to create more entrepreneurial environments, which not only empower employees to proactively propose and test new ideas, but also reach beyond company walls to involve many others in the co-creation of new solutions. In this paper, we outline the most notable benefits of hackathons from the perspective of large organizations, and present the benefits and a methodology for organizing hackathons, ie. competition-based events where participants work in small teams over a short period of time to ideate, design, rapidly prototype and test their ideas with a user-centric approach to solve a determined challenge. This paper also provides a brief insight into the CEMEX Hackathon, which was organized following the aforementioned methodology.

According to some reports, up to 70% of change initiatives fail in organizations, in part because there is a lack of knowledge about methods of service design and service implementation. Sustainable product-service system (S.PSS) designers also face particular problems during the implementation process. One of the reasons that cause this is because they spend more time planning and generating ideas, but devote little energy in the implementation phase. Some frameworks and concepts from other disciplines are at hand to help designers to increase the chances of success implementing S.PSS projects.

Virtual teamwork is increasingly becoming a characteristic way of working within and between organisations in the digital economy, bringing both opportunities and drawbacks. This article considers communication in virtual teams and ways in which information and communication technologies (ICTs) can enhance or impede it. It is recognised that the richness of face-to-face communication cannot be captured fully by the tools on offer, although important steps to create team belonging in virtual presence have already been taken. While the tools go some way to permitting distributed team members to interact informally, they cannot go all the way to building and maintaining the personal side of relationships, nor provide stress-relief in many instances. Information overload is highlighted as an example of this failure, and ways to address the problems inherent in ICT-mediated communication and its usage should be sought via inter-disciplinary approaches. On the other hand, the virtual paradigm leads to new organisational forms and organisational culture that tend to strengthen the individual's role in the organisational grapevine.

The purpose of this article is twofold. On the one hand, we elaborate the emerging concept of sustainable innovation and analyze the relevance of innovation to solving wicked problems and to enhancing sustainable well-being. On the other hand, we examine the changing conditions for innovation creation: building global knowledge hubs and local innovation ecosystems.

Since the 1990s, change management has received considerable attention as the new paradigm for the management of organisational transformations as well as behavioural and motivational changes within both for-profit and non-profit organisations. As such, constant changes have also become the new “normality” in education and social service organisations. It is inherent to organisations to be confronted permanently and simultaneously with different ‘rationalities’ of their stakeholders. As hybrid organisations, they have to mediate between the logics of governmental, market-based, and societal structures (Brandsen et al., 2005). This is also crucial in the light of the various challenges related to the integration of digital technologies into almost all areas of education and social services and the development of new virtual business cultures within those organisations. Against this background, this paper will discuss the questions of how the process of digital change management must be designed, implemented, and sustainably developed in educational and social service organisations, of what principles of leading such changes could be relied on, and of what leadership the change agents in such a process require specific qualities and competencies. Digital change and innovation continuously include organisational learning, the re-placement of old management practices with more human-centred management activities, the development of new digital literacy skills and leadership competencies, the facilitation of personnel development to mobilise the staff to enact changes in their behaviour, values, and attitudes in volatile environments and uncertain times (Arnold, 2019). Eventually, the paper leads to a discussion and reflection of a sustainable framework for digital change management at the level of the individual change agents, change programs and initiatives, and the organisation itself.

A significant issue facing R&D managers today is maintaining a stimulating technology organization staffed with appropriately skilled individuals who share the vision of the corporation and constitute talented and effective teams. At the 2008 Industrial Research Institute Member Summit, Ernest R. Gilmont of the University of Pennsylvania and Robert Cook of Clorox co-chaired a discussion focused on identifying current issues related to how R&D organizations are responding to their human resources challenges to ensure viability of their R&D workforce. The case studies that follow are adapted from presentations by panelists from W. L. Gore, Roche Diagnostics and The Hershey Company.

Purpose – This study seeks to investigate whether a good management
environment in companies determines results in terms of country
competitiveness. Additionally, it aims to verify if innovation plays a
role in contributing to this.
Design/methodology/approach – The study used structural equation
modeling and data on 138 countries contemplated in The Global
Competitiveness Report 2016/2017 (2016 World Economic Forum).
A  number  of  theories  have  been  used  to  relate  competitiveness
to innovation and to management practices. This discussion was
expanded, taking these variables into account in a more comprehensive
framework.
Findings  – The  analysis  performed  indicates  the  role  of  best
management practices as a mediator in the relationship that exists
between innovation and global competitiveness, which reinforces the
importance of a good level of management.
Originality/Value- There have been many studies and discussions
about global competitiveness. The factors in the literature used to
explain a country´s degree of competitiveness include cheap labor,
abundant raw materials, the amount of capital available for investment,
and, especially, the capacity to innovate. Some authors point to a fifth factor: best management practices. The paper shows how this factor improves competitiveness. The most important contribution of this study is to demonstrate that innovation alone cannot by itself ensure competitiveness in companies or nations, and requires the simultaneous presence of best management practices.

This study explores the influence of multi-platform structural newsroom features and individual innovative values on journalistic cross-channel and cross-sectional working procedures. According to results of an online survey of print and online business journalists associated with multi-platform news outlets in the German-speaking area of Switzerland: (1) multi-platform reporting is strongly connected to innovative values of journalists, which in turn (2) changes cross-channel—(3) but not cross-sectional—working procedures. A multi-platform strategy is effective in overcoming procedural inertia, which is essential to maximizing innovative capacities of a news organization.

"Building on a strong tradition of research into how technological convergence is affecting newsrooms and news production practices (Achtenhagen & Raviola, 2009; Deuze, 2008; Domingo, 2008; Erdal, 2011; Schlesinger & Doyle, 2015; Steensen, 2009), Juliane Lischka’s article investigates the extent to which, for business journalists working at German-language newspapers in Switzerland, shifting to a multi-platform approach helps to overcome potentially counter-productive rigidities in work routines and procedures. Lishka’s survey reveals that whereas age and gender have little bearing on the propensity for journalistic staff to be innovative, flexible and collaborative in their approach to work, levels of seniority and, in particular, whether the newsroom has been re-structured are influential factors. She concludes that a converged multi-platform strategy is likely to be helpful in overcoming procedural inertia and promoting innovation." (Doyle, G. (2015). Almost everyone in India is conscious of the importance and urgency of the Challenges in Education and these are reflected in several other parts of the world as well. Some of these are the challenge of numbers, of relevance, of Quality, of access, of costs and of speed. There is sometimes a sense of paralysis at the enormity of the challenge and the apparent impossibility of managing conflicting expectations. But we need a change in direction, as suggested in the scenario painted by Edward de Bono. “Imagine a ship at sea that is in trouble. The lights keep going out. The engine is faltering. The rudder is unreliable. The first mate is drunk. The crew is very demoralised. The service is appalling. The passengers on the ship are very dissatisfied. Then a new captain and first mate are brought in by helicopter. Very quickly everything changes. The morale of the crew is lifted. Service improves. The engine is fixed. The rudder is fixed. The lights stay on. Everything is fine. But the ship is still heading in the wrong direction.” The solution to these multiple challenges probably lies in a number of disruptive innovative solutions. These include inculcating self-learning (building on meta-cognition), measuring learning, collaborative and co-operative learning, personalisation of learning and learning analytics. However, in addition to new systems or technologies, we need a fundamental change of perspective. Education is seen as the responsibility of the State and the system is based on authority and licenses and permissions to allow education to be transacted in modern times this is unlikely to work. As Henry Maine had said ' as society progresses, it moves from status to contract'. So must the educational system build contractual relationships between the learner and providers of learning as more important than statutory authority. A very promising technological and pedagogical model that has received a lot of attention during the last few years and adoption by Stanford, Harvard, Duke and almost 100 of the world's top ranking Universities to teach millions of learners is that of the MOOC. The MOOC is considered on the one hand as a panacea for education and on the other as a defilement of the sanctity of the higher education tradition. The truth will probably lie somewhere in between and we must explore the potential of MOOCs to create a model of simultaneously teaching on-site and off-site learners, using synchronous and a-synchronous teacher learner interactions to deliver high quality learning to large numbers , maybe evolve a model for a classroom of 10,000 learners. This event is a step in that direction. We are experimenting here with mounting 10 MOOCs in a variety of subjects, for different target groups delivered by a team of Internationally renowned resource persons. We will be exploring several technological platforms and pedagogical models to find answers to a few interesting questions:
 What is the right size of a learning cohort that is empowered with technology?
 What is the right price for tuition?
 What would be the most appropriate technology platform for mass education?
 What is the best way to cope with linguistic diversity?
 What course programs are best delivered as MOOCs?
 What skill sets must learners have to benefit most from MOOCs?
 What skill sets must educators acquire to teach effectively with MOOCs?

Deutschland steht vor gewaltigen Herausforderungen: Klimakrise und Zerstörung der Ökosysteme, die Covid-19 Pandemie und der rasante demographische und technologische Wandel lassen sich in den tradierten Verwaltungsstrukturen nicht mehr angemessen adressieren. Es bedarf eines grundlegenden Kulturwandels in der öffentlichen Verwaltung, um Deutschland schneller, antizipativer und effektiver durch die nächsten Jahrzehnte der Transformationen führen zu können. Dazu gehören ein neues Selbstverständnis sowie entsprechende agile Prozesse, zeitgemäße Kompetenzen, eine horizontale und vertikale Öffnung des Staates, ernst gemeinte Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung und Transparenz, institutionalisierte Zusammenarbeit mit der Zivilgesellschaft, Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft, bottom-up Föderalismus-und vieles mehr. Wirklich handlungsfähig sind demokratische Regierungen erst durch funktionsfähige Verwaltungen und ein vertrauensvolles Zusammenwirken mit gesellschaftlichen Akteur:innen. Daher müssen wir die öffentliche Verwaltung in ihrer Kernfunktion stärken: die Aufrechterhaltung des freiheitlich-demokratischen Rechtsstaates. Der Anspruch muss sein, dass Bürger:innen die öffentliche Verwaltung als wichtigen Anker in der Transformation und nicht als notwendiges Übel sehen. Dass sie die Kompetenzen der Verwaltungsmitarbeitenden wertschätzen und anerkennen. Dass sie die administrativen Abläufe und Entscheidungen nachvollziehen und nicht als Belastung, sondern als Mehrwert empfinden und produktiv für sich nutzen können. Dass sie in die Handlungsfähigkeit des Staates Vertrauen haben.

On July the 7th 2015, board members, employees and management of sport federations, NOC*NSF, partners in sport and other stakeholders came together for an inspirational convention. It was the start of the movement that we now call the Transition in sport, or ‘the Story of NL Sport’. Some 250 people witnessed presentations on changes in society and what it meant for the business of sport. In the backdrop of rusty old buildings in Northside Amsterdam harbor, they spoke about how the world had changed in technological, economic and social perspective and that they needed to adapt to the changes. Currently, the Transition shows some very promising initiatives and is in the phase of empowering others to act on the vision and to create short-term wins as a proof for change.

This research is about the chances for successful cultural change in leadership in the organized sport sector in the Netherlands. Through narrative analysis, it uncovers storylines that are important to the remainder of the project. A questionnaire on the same subject underlines the initial findings in the interviews, held with board members, young professionals and members of the Dream Team (the leading coalition of CEO’s and managers). The Transition consists of six ground breaking projects that can change the face of the landscape in the organized sport sector in the Netherlands, and ultimately will lead to a new ‘way of doing’, if successful. As the sector now enters a liminal phase, or a state of disruption, it will be very important to pay attention to elements of cultural change that will support the ‘vision of the story of NL Sport’. The main research question being:

“How can the Transition project be successful in changing culture of leadership of the Netherlands organized sport sector?”

Change in sport federations and their heavily regulated democratic structures is difficult. Governance and leadership in such organizations are interlined and focuses on ‘keeping the Status Quo’, rather than creating room for innovation and change. Trying to change the system itself may be too difficult to do. Both because the cultural resistance will be strong, but also because current structure is very valuable for competition and elite sports development. Trying to work around the system to be able to tap into commercial opportunities, seems a more promising route to go. By explicitly fostering culture in the organized sport sector into a more entrepreneurial, open and trust-based environment, chances are that the fixed structures will eventually ‘loosen up’ and give way for innovation and change more easily. To be able to successfully change culture, following up on the narratives on leadership and diversity will be helpful. The desired kind of leadership is not well defined in the Story of NL Sport and diversity is not mentioned at all. Both in literature and the interviews however, diversity at the top is indicated as one of the more important preconditions for a change-positive culture. Other effects of working on more diversity would be better relationships with stakeholders, a broader view on the complex context of sport federations and NOC*NSF, and a more divers set of competencies at the table.
Leadership is an important element of change processes. Although the current culture of leadership is difficult to determine, transactional elements seem to be dominant. Sport should invest in developing leadership related to Transformational styles. Maybe the latest theories on complexity leadership and adaptive leadership can offer guidance, especially considered the increasingly fast changing, complex environment of sport federations. Getting young professionals involved in solving the real problems of the ‘Fixed Structures and Systems Thinking’ is another recommendation. It suits multiple ends, as young professionals collaborate easily by nature, they know what the new network society involves and value content over position or ego. This way, a new generation could be the learning and teaching agents of the Transition in unfreezing, changing and refreezing the ‘new way we do things around here’.

This paper reports on an investigation into the online visibility of work undertaken in South Africa in the field of poverty alleviation. An experiment with
Google searches was undertaken, motivated by concerns about the visibility of South African research and development work, particularly in a context where social
inequality is extreme and poverty such a critical issue. Aware that much attention – through research and the practice of development work – is being paid to
poverty alleviation1
, the authors set out to examine whether that work could be found easily, and what the nature of the search results would be. Significant sums
of public money are invested in research, which should result in the production and dissemination of locally generated knowledge as a public good grounded in
local realities. A great deal of national and international funding is also spent. Thus, research published online should inform and reflect on national and regional
development practice, while contributing perspectives from the South to the global corpus of poverty research. Research to understand poverty and inform the design
and targeting of poverty alleviation programmes needs to be freely available and actively shared in order for it to accumulate value. In this regard it is argued that
there are exponentially beneficial linkages between research, scholarly publication and social development, which originate with local knowledge production and
are amplified by the availability and discoverability of that research. Availability and discoverability add breadth and depth to the potential use, value and impact
of the knowledge produced

The issue of creativity in relation to innovativeness and entrepreneurship became the subject of the analysis of this study.

The paper aims at building a model, which measures the company’s innovative leadership. Currently some innovation indices exist, but all of them evaluate innovativeness on a macro level and not on company’s one. The necessity of such a model results from the lack of any kind of assessment method that could help companies to evaluate their own innovation efforts, performance and capabilities. Furthermore, the country innovation performance depends very much on companies’ innovation activities and currently no method exists for boosting and properly evaluating companies’ innovation performance and potentials. In order to distinguish the difference between the company’s leadership and the company’s innovative leadership, a model for measuring the companies’ leadership is developed first in this paper. After that a model for company’s innovative leadership is developed. By using this technic, both models could be used for measuring the company’s leadership in comparison with the same company’s innovative leadership. The model could be applied as well as a summary of some best practices in the company’s innovative leadership. It represents a well-balanced model for innovation development and performance. However, the main target of the model is to analyze and measure the companies’ innovative leadership and to compare different companies on that specific criterion. The model could be used as a company innovative leadership index as well after its appliance on some particular industrial sectors or regions.

Climate change is a threat to society, including the global tourism industry. If hotels around the world do not take responsibility, in relation to the development of new climate-friendly solutions, the industry risks undermining itself in the long-term. Conversely, climate change can also be seen as a source of innovation and improved competitiveness. Therefore, there is good reason to be inspired by the hotels which consistently develop new procedures based on energy efficiency and recycling. On the basis of a combination of a practice-oriented circular economy on the one side and an abstract systems theory on the other, a minor study was executed of how leading hotels concerned about sustainable development through innovation adapt their business to a circular economy.

The purpose of this study was to propose effective competitive strategy for the garment companies in Vietnam to survive, grow and compete in the process of globalization. Scope of the study was the garment industry in Vietnam. Through the process of finding a competitive strategy, six elements have been identified: raw materials, product quality, design capacity, human resources, technology and innovation. The research used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. In quantitative method, the questionnaires were sent out to over 500 garment companies in the regions. Through the 353 responses, only 299 valid answers were selected. After analyzing the responses, four main factors affecting the competitive strategy of the garment company in Vietnam have been identified. They were technology, product quality, human resources, and raw materials. Two important factors that have been eliminated are design capability and innovation. Results of the study showed the weakness of the garment company in Vietnam that is having high sale revenue but poor profit. To improve this problem requires the garment companies to invest in many stages. The first stage of the competitive strategy starts with four main factors: technology, product quality, human resources, and raw materials.

The book introduces students to the background and key issues of sustainability and suggests ways in which these concepts can be applied in business practice. Though the book takes a business perspective, it is interdisciplinary in its nature and draws on knowledge from socio-economic, political, and environmental studies, thereby providing a practical understanding of sustainability in the changing paradigm of global business.

Research creates both knowledge and technology which are put into practical use through the process of innovation. The success in achieving applied scientific technologies can be measured in the form of technological solutions, patents, inventions, published research papers, etc. The purpose of the research was to formulate an economic framework and develop technological solutions for Zimbabwe with respect to knowledge generation, innovation and enterprise development. This was compounded by an exploration for opportunities in cybersecurity and machine learning for use in the knowledge generation and dissemination business. Cybersecurity is an amalgamation of technologies, processes and operations purposed to preserve and protect computer information systems from cyber-attacks or unauthorized access. Machine Learning (ML) entails the automatic data analysis of large data sets and production of models for the general relationships found among data. The Pragmatism paradigm was used as the research philosophy in this research as it epitomizes the congruity between knowledge and action. The qualitative aspect was primarily used in the knowledge generation component which was based on an integral research architecture which combines descriptive, narrative, theoretical, and experimental survey methods, through focused group discussions as the major research design. The quantitative dimension used an experiment as a research design to explore prototype models for cybersecurity and machine learning. Priority projects for strategic investment were identified for commercialization and these were on post-harvest technologies; small scale mining/mineral value addition/bio mining; clean water alternatives; tiles technologies from mining waste; ICT innovations in Machine Learning and Cybersecurity; and defence technologies. A Bayesian Network model for Cybersecurity was developed to guide implementation of future cybersecurity systems in Africa. The research used the KDDCup 1999 intrusion detection benchmark dataset in order to build an efficient network intrusion detection system. The sample comprised primary data with 42 variables in a set of 494,020 instances that was analysed using mainly the SNORT open-source software and other Bayesian Network supportive platforms. A Bayesian Network model was developed which took into consideration the most efficient ML algorithms.

Este trabajo desarrolla un análisis descriptivo de 10 universidades en el mundo respecto a la innovación pedagógica y la formación de sus profesores que se desarrollan en sus áreas o centros especializados con miras a establecer las buenas prácticas en la gestión de la innovación y establecer tendencias que sirvan de insumo para que otras universidades diseñen un modelo de innovación pedagógica.
