For many years, numerous innovative housing projects (IHPs) have introduced visions on the future of
everyday life by foreseeing the success of various (smart) technologies at home. In general, these projects are
thought to be ‘futuristic, industrial, expensive and gadgetry’ (Mohammadi, 2010). However, many of the
experimental technologies of that time have already infiltrated into today’s daily activities. Therefore, the
motivation of this paper is to explore the integration (level) of technologies into the home environment. The
goal of this paper is to analyse the (level of) integration of technology promised in IHPs realized between the
period of 1920-2010. This is done by creating an overview of determined IHPs of which the innovative
technologies used are identified and analysed accordingly.
The analysis of integration is conducted by creating an overview of the existing IHPs. The sampling unit of the
study is determined to thirty-eight (38) IHPs, between the period from 1927 to 2008. The cases are examined
based on their following factors: ‘date’, ‘typology’, ‘goal’, 'initiator/designer' and 'prominent technological
novelty at that time'. Five typologies come forward in the IHPs: 'conceptual' (ideas transferred to paper),
'showcases' (open exhibition for visitors), 'experimental lab' (monitoring use/adjusted frequently), ‘living lab’
(monitored and inhabited, but short-term), and 'inhabited dwelling' (taken into production and used). Thus,
each IHP is examined individually by visually presenting its factors, and the IHPs in a shared typology are
discussed in relation to each other.
The novelty of this study is to synthesize the history of the IHPs through their contribution to the adaptation of
(smart) technologies in the home environment as well as in architectural design. The added value lies in the
insights of the factors of the cases and how they affect the integration of technology into daily life. In the
conclusion, the rate of the necessity of the technologies in the home environment is reconsidered and
discussed regarding the impact of IHPs on the architecture of today.

This paper presents the design and implementation of SOAP-based residential management for smart home system's appliances control. An appliance control module based on SOAP and Web Services developed to solve the interoperation of various home appliances in smart home systems. 15 feedback based control channels implemented with residential management system through Web Services. If the residential management system experiences server downtime, the home appliances can still be controlled using alternate control mechanism with GSM network via SMS Module locally and remotely. This system offers a complete, bi-directional real-time control and monitoring of smart home systems. 1 .

Home automation system is a system that controls by the smart device using a mobile application. It can control home appliances such as light, fans, air conditions, and smart security locks, etc. Bluetooth or Wi-Fi technology will be used to control things remotely.  Many people were thinking about that technology is taking a really huge part of our lives. It does! we’re living in a modern generation where smart and intelligent systems are necessary to be there wherever we are to make our lives easier and much better, for example, we can do many things faster, better, and more accurate.

Sketches in Voice User Interface explores the conversational and evocative aspects of peoples’ interactions with no-screen embodied voice user interfaces (VUIs) in domestic spaces. The project uses an annotated research through design methodology to create a series of Sketches in Voice User Interface for relational conversations with users. The research involves an autoethnographic study of existing voice-based virtual personal assistants (VPAs). Informed by these precedents Sketches in VUI are designed through iterative prototyping to explore ways in which VUIs can go beyond the existing virtual personal assistant in our everyday conversations. Unlike the conventional voice-based VPAs (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant) operating on the commands of the user, the Sketches in VUI drive conversations and take an agentive role in human-computer conversations.
Using the design research approach, this project serves as a bridge between two key contextual voices in the domain of conversational technologies. On one hand, is the tech industry’s case for usability that VUI is ‘the most natural interface.’ On the other hand, is the social sciences case critically calling VUI ‘an artificial nature’ and questioning if conversations with a machine are conversations at all.
The project concludes with an ‘experience study’ to enquire into the experience of participants as they converse with the designed Sketches. The study observes how participants react to the Sketches (behavioural response) and how they feel (emotional response), comparing them to their experience of existing voice-based VPAs, captured via videography and qualitative interviews. The study findings along with the designed Sketches form an annotated portfolio of generated knowledge about relational conversations with embodied voice user interfaces in our intimate spaces.

There is a growing requirement for Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure to ensure low response time to provision latency-sensitive real-time applications such as health monitoring, disaster management, and smart homes. Fog computing offers a means to provide such requirements, via a virtualized intermediate layer to provide data, computation, storage, and networking services between Cloud datacenters and end users. A key element within such Fog computing environments is resource management. While there are existing resource manager in Fog computing, they only focus on a subset of parameters important to Fog resource management encompassing system response time, network bandwidth, energy consumption and latency. To date no existing Fog resource manager considers these parameters simultaneously for decision making, which in the context of smart homes will become increasingly key. In this paper, we propose a novel resource management technique (ROUTER) for fog-enabled Cloud computing environments, which leverages Particle Swarm Optimization to optimize simultaneously. The approach is validated within an IoT-based smart home automation scenario, and evaluated within iFogSim toolkit driven by empirical models within a small-scale smart home experiment. Results demonstrate our approach results a reduction of 12% network bandwidth, 10% response time, 14% latency and 12.35% in energy consumption.

In recent years, the world has seen the emergence of a number of urban projects which, under the banner of experimentation, have promoted alternative models of city-making capable, in theory, of creating sustainable built environments. Among these supposedly experimental models, the smart city and the eco-city stand out in terms of geographical diffusion, and are hailed by their advocates as the mark of an innovative urbanism based on a scientific approach to urban development. Through the analysis of Hong Kong and Masdar City, examples of a smart-city agenda and an eco-city project respectively, this paper questions the sustainability of so-called smart cities and eco-cities, by investigating the extent to which they are developed in a controlled and systematic manner as their developers claim. More specifically, the paper counterclaims mainstream understandings of smart and ecological urbanism, arguing that what are promoted as cohesive settlements shaped by a homogeneous vision of the sustainable city, are actually fragmented cities made of disconnected and often incongruous pieces of urban fabric. Theoretically, these claims are discussed through the concept of Frankenstein urbanism which draws upon Mary Shelley's novel as a metaphor for unsuccessful experiments generated by the forced union of different, incompatible elements.

The physical and technical characteristics of a cohousing community influence social interactions of dwellers. Technology for instance has a mediating effect on the praxis and/or the perception of humans. In the social ecology of a cohousing community social and individual factors also influence social interactions between residents. This paper presents the relation between social interactions and the physical characteristics of the common areas in a cohousing community and discusses the possibilities for technology to support social contact design principles of cohousing communities.
The study was performed in two directions. Firstly information about the effect of technology and social interactions in cohousing communities was derived from literature. Secondly a project with students was performed that concentrated on the importance of common areas for social interactions in two cohousing communities. From the literature and the case studies it can be concluded that common hallways and the common room have an important function in facilitating social nteractions. Technology may be used to support these functions and influence interactions by a change of script or a change in the perception of the dwellers.

The fingerprint is the most widely used technology for identification or authentication systems, which can be known as fingerprint authentication systems (FAS).In addition to providing security, the fingerprint is also easy to use, very reliable and has a high accuracy for identity recognition. FAS is still exposed to security attacks because fingerprint information is unencrypted.Therefore, fingerprint information requires protection known as fingerprint template protection (FTP).This paper aims to provide an organized literature on FTP.Three research questions were formulated to guide the literature analysis.First, this analysis focuses on the types of FTP schemes; second, the metrics used for evaluating the FTP schemes; and finally, the common datasets used for evaluating the FTP schemes. This paper discusses an ongoing project that serves the needs of people with disabilities and the elderly at home. It uses the WiFi technology to establish communication between a user's Smartphone and a controller board. The project uses a microcontroller to control the door lock and is equipped with a camera to identify the visitors. By connecting the servo motor and camera to the Raspberry Pi controller board, it can be controlled via WiFi to provide remote access from a smartphone.

Consumers' interest in smart home concepts has been increasing due to the rapidly expanding home appliances industry that introduces Wi-Fi enabled appliances. Manufacturers provide firmware that allows users to control appliances using smartphones from anywhere. Smart appliances, firmware, and smartphones connected to a cloud server for data storage to form a simple smart home automation system (SHAS). This paper reviews how SHAS is implemented and its recent progress. The authors' observation found that there is a growing interest among researchers and developers to study software-defined network, web services, and end-user development tools within 2016 and 2018. This progress caused by researchers' and developers' interest to mitigate heterogeneity issues in SHAS.

Also, the number of wireless connected devices in use around the World is constantly and rapidly increasing, leading to potential health risks due to over exposer to electromagnetic radiation. An opportunity appears to reduce the energy consumption in residential buildings by introducing smart home automation systems. Multiple such solutions are available in the market with most of them being wireless, so the challenge is to design such systems that would limit the quantity of newly generated electromagnetic radiation. This paper covers the design of a prototype for IoT and GPS enabled door lock system. The aim of this research is to design a door lock system that does not need manual input from user for convenience purpose while also remaining secure. The system primarily consists STM32L100 microcontroller as its core, TIP102 transistor that controls 12 V DC solenoid, and Xbee module to communicate with the smart home's host and receive status regarding user's GPS position. The system is tested by measuring the user's distance from the predetermined location using GPS coordinate captured by an Android application, which serves to test whether the system is able to operate as intended and measure the device's power usage. The test result shows that the device is able to work based on GPS coordinate data received, using 42.3 mA and 587 mA current in idle and active modes, respectively.

The project aims in designing a system which makes operating of electrical appliances in home through Android mobile phone possible. The controlling of electrical appliances is done wirelessly through Android smart phone using the Bluetooth feature and voice controlled commands present in it. Here in this project the Android smart phone is used as a remote control for operating the electrical appliances.

The high energy required by home appliances (like white goods, audio/video devices and communication equipments) and air conditioning systems (heating and cooling), makes our homes one of the most critical areas for the impact of energy consumption on natural environment. Smart homes hold the potential for increasing energy efficiency, decreasing costs of energy use, decreasing the carbon footprint by including renewable resources, and transforming the role of the occupant. To deliver a sustained economic growth rate and to meet life time energy needs of all citizens, Nigeria needs to increase its primary energy supply by about 5 times and electricity generation capacity about 6 times. As a result energy service demand growth rates will keep on increasing because of accelerated industrialization, urbanization, and an emerging consumer society. A home energy management (HEM) system has the potential to enable demand response (DR) implementation for residential customers.
The simplest technique to save power and consequently the costs is when we switch off the lights and other appliances as soon as we leave the room. However, this is not a second nature to many of us. This paper presents a detailed hardware architecture of HEM, the idea is to automate, by creating a device that monitors "changes" in the environment and respond to the situation. By switching off lights and fans in a timely manner, we stand to save costs on electricity bill. This paper also present a detailed review of various Home Energy Management Schemes (HEM’s).

Although Internet of Things (IoT) brings significant advantages over traditional communication technologies for smart grid and smart home applications, these implementations are still very rare. Relying on a comprehensive literature review, this paper aims to contribute towards narrowing the gap between the existing state-of-the-art smart home applications and the prospect of their integration into an IoT enabled environment. We propose a holistic framework which incorporates different components from IoT architectures/frameworks proposed in the literature, in order to efficiently integrate smart home objects in a cloud-centric IoT based solution. We identify a smart home management model for the proposed framework and the main tasks that should be performed at each level. We additionally discuss practical design challenges with emphasis on data processing, as well as smart home communication protocols and their interoperability. We believe that the holistic framework ascertained in this paper can be used as a solid base for the future developers of Internet of Things based smart home solutions.

Smart home Automation technology, lifetime is getting easier and simpler on all side in life. In the world, automatically systems are being chosen over the manual system. With the fast growth in the number of users of the internet through the past decade, the Internet has become a part and section of human life. In this study, a remotely controlled smart home automation system, for monitoring and controlling the temperature degree, humidity percentage, gas leakage, fires, and rain in the house, was developed. This system can also control the light by using motion and light sensors inside and outside the home. The developed system consists of two parts: hardware and software. The hardware consists of many units such as smartphones, personal computers, Arduino Mega, Ethernet shield and relay board, temperature and humidity, gas, motion, flame, light and rain sensors, a buzzer and fire alarm. Arduino Mega used as the Microcontroller is the primary hardware unit connected with an Ethernet Shield responsible for sending and receiving directives and status via the internet. The software is the second part of this system; it is Arduino IDE's code used to design web browser page. The web browser page connected to hardware devices and sensors through Ethernet shield. Moreover, it works to control and monitor this system from the web page and smartphone. Finally, this system uses an internet network for communication and alerts due to its low cost and large area coverage and can control every device via the web browser and Android application anywhere and anytime. Moreover, the gas, flame, light, temperature, humidity and rain sensors work correctly with excellent results.

Abstract: The paper discusses Home Area Networks (HAN) communication technologies for smart home and domestic application integration. The work is initiated by identifying the application areas that can benefit from this integration. A broad and inclusive home communication interface is analysed utilizing as a key piece a Gateway based on machine-to-machine (M2M) communications that interacts with the surrounding environment. Then, the main wireless networks are thoroughly assessed, and later, their suitability to the requirements of HAN considering the application area is analysed. Finally, a qualitative analysis is portrayed.

Smart home system offers people to control home environment in efficient and comfortable manner. Comparative analysis of existing smart home system has been made which provides a clear idea of the pros and cons of the existing systems. Working principle of different types of smart home systems such as Dual Tone Multi Frequency based, Global System for Mobile based, voice recognition based, Zigbee based, Bluetooth based, Internet and Wi-fi based, and Gesture based smart home systems has been studied. Comments according to different aspects and features have been made for the studied smart home systems which enable users to select suitable technology according to budget and needs.

The development of new technologies is rewriting our life. We are facing a storm of new devices with new possibilities and applications. Sensors and beacons may be used in many areas. In this work, I take a general overview of the application of sensors and beacons in smart homes. This is a new area with a lot of interesting applications that promise to make life easier improving the quality of living. The aim of this paper is to analyze which sensors can be used in a smart home and what are the benefits and challenges arising from their use. INTRODUCTION The development of technology, the use of devices smaller and smaller and cheaper, the possibilities offered by the new connections and internet, revolutionize more each day our world and our way to interact with it. All these new technologies are changing our lives, sometimes without even realizing that, and they will keep doing this as a result of an unstoppable changing which is getting us to rethink our habits and to face the births of new problems, risk, but also new opportunities for all: people, companies and society. In this context, sensor and beacons are becoming very important through several applications in a wide variety of areas that just some years ago would not have been imaginable. One of these areas is the living and a new idea of living is emerging recently: the smart home. According to the Smart Home Association the best definition of smart home technology is: " the integration of technology and services through home networking for a better quality of living ". The aim of this paper is to take a general overview of this area trying to understand how is possible to use sensors and beacons in a home to improve the quality of living and analyze the opportunities and the challenges arising from their use. For this review, I selected some papers and researches found through The University of Salford Library and Google Scholar.

We present an indoor solar irradiance model, which can accurately estimate the actual solar energy passing through window's glazing materials at any time and geographical locations of the earth under the clear sky. The data from this model are further utilized to compute the energy harvested by photovoltaic (PV) panels, which is stored in Li-ion batteries as power supplies of smart motorized roller shades. Our experiments deduce one energy generation model of one PV panel with maximum power point tracking circuit, which is a function of solar irradiance and temperature. The loss of load probability (LLP) curves are obtained for multiple PV areas and battery capacities, which achieve the self-sufficiency of the off-grid motorized roller shades. Our experiments show that those models correctly predict indoor solar irradiance and PV energy generation. The designed PV-battery systems are proved by uninterrupted operations of ten thousand off-grid motorized roller shades installed inside buildings worldwide over one year.

The main object of this project is to develop a home automation system with a four button key fob transmitter by using RF (Radio Frequency) technology.
Nowadays, houses are gradually shifting from normal switches to centralized control system, involving a remote control transmitter. This technology is not only easy to use but also helps to prevent missuses of energy. Remote control (key fob) transmitter is small and very light weight, which will work from a decent distance.
It helps elderly people to control switches from anywhere up to 75 feet. This four button key fob transmitter is also very productive for commercial uses in Industrial and medical systems. Remote controlled home automation system provides a simpler solution with RF technology.

In order to achieve this, a RF remote(Keyfob) is interfaced to the microcontroller on transmitter side which sends ON/OFF commands to the receiver where loads are connected. By operating the specified remote switch on the transmitter, the loads can be turned ON/OFF remotely through wireless technology.
Arduino IDE software has been used to compile some programs related to the microcontroller ATmega328. (Arduino Uno R3)

La maison intelligente est définie comme une résidence équipée de plusieurs technologies qui vise à assister l’habitant dans les situations diverses de la vie domestique en améliorant le confort et simplifient un certain nombre de tâches.   
La domotique regroupe les technologies de l’électronique, de l'automatique, de l’informatique et des télécommunications permettant d’améliorer le confort (commande à distance d'appareils ou équipement, gestion d’arrosage…), la sécurité (protection contre les intrusions, détection d'incendie…), la communication et la gestion d’énergie (gestion du climatiseur, d’éclairage …).
C’est dans ce cadre que se situe notre projet, où nous avons développé un système domotique et l'implanter dans un prototype, ce système permet aux utilisateurs de piloter, contrôler et de surveiller les dispositifs domestiques localement ou à distance via une application Web ou via une application Android, en utilisant 4 cartes Arduino comme des cerveaux de notre système et on exploitant les protocoles de communication Wifi et Bluetooth.

There is a sudden exponential use of security systems in our day to day life. For example, security in a business space, organisation, or bank locker is important to every individual now. Lately, security cameras are being utilized in order to build safe and secure places in organisations. However, this technology needs a person regularly to detect any problem in the frame taken from the camera. The main aim of this paper is to enhance the traditional security system. The security system based on the IoT platform has the potential of interacting real-time with the device. The system consists of a camera, voice sensor/microphone, motion/activity sensor and an LTE/Wi-Fi module which is interfaced with the heart of the system, processor. This entire economic system using IoT in real-time will allow mobile devices and computers to remotely track the activities occurring at the location where the IoT device is placed and records all the activities, which will be saved on one’s cloud storage account. The IoT based security system helps in added protection of the user/customer property. Security systems are designed to perform certain tasks when a secured zone is breached. In this paper, notification is sent to the concerned person as an alert where the user can take necessary actions. The main advantage of this system is the ability to remotely manage one’s property 24/7. With this IoT based smart locker, one can monitor, get alerts, notify in case of emergency from anywhere in the world using mobile application via cloud connectivity 24/7. To be specific, we aim to design a light-weight, low cost, extensible, flexible wireless smart security system using IoT which employs the integration of various latest technologies. The combination of the various technologies can be used synergistically as a smart security to control a system in a house/organisation (lock or unlock a system with the help of SMS/app) from remote locations. The complete system is designed considering all types of door locks and lockers by providing a simple, effective ease of installation, to provide homes/organisations extreme security and our system will be a means for preventing, detecting and counter-measuring robbery or burglary.

At the beginning of the third millennium, the scientific debate was raised on the importance of technology in society in general, and the service of the built environment in particular. Then The computer and Internet domains were at the top of the priorities of scientific interest as the most prominent feature of technology. Technology is the basic idea, expressed in a large number of approaches and iterations from most, if not all, (SMART SYSTEMS) that colonized buildings and cities. This paper introduces a low-cost android application (app) controlled smart home system that can remotely switch on/off as many as 208 appliances using only 4 digital pins of an ATmega328 microcontroller based Arduino UNO board. The appliance switching system requires approximately 70% less wiring cost for real life installation in home compared to the similar conventional systems. Moreover, the smart home system includes: (1) automatic night light that only lights up at night if it detects any human in the close proximity; (2) 'Outside Mode' that turns off every single appliance connected to the system with a touch from android app when user leaves the home; (3) a smart security system that sounds an alarm, sends message and makes call to the user using GSM module if it detects any intrusion in the house. The android application provides a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) to send command to the microcontroller via Bluetooth. Compared to the products available in market, cost of the proposed system is cheaper to a great extent.
