Tablets, smartphones, online media and consumption.

Background: The progression of mobile phone technology has led to the development of multi-functional smartphones providing access to features such as social media, e-mail, and videos alongside the basic functions of a mobile phone. Increasing amounts of research has explored the potential addictive nature of smartphones to develop a theoretical framework that describes personality factors related to problematic use. The present study examined the Integrative Pathways Model and the effect of age, gender, impulsiveness, excessive reassurance seeking, extraversion, and depression on problematic smartphone use. Method: A total of 147 smartphone users (mean age = 30.96, SD = 12.97, 69.4% female) completed an online survey comprising of measures of problematic smartphone use, excessive reassurance seeking, extraversion, depression, and impulsiveness. Results: Age, impulsiveness, excessive reassurance seeking, and depression were all significantly related to problematic smartphone use, however extraversion was not significantly related. Furthermore, age and impulsiveness were significant independent predictors of problematic smartphone use. No gender differences were found. Conclusions: The findings presented several factors that predict problematic smartphone use, implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Los jóvenes se han adaptado de forma muy rápida al entorno digital aprovechando todas las posibilidades que este les ofrece, mientras que la radio ha reaccionado con lentitud
y sin saber con exactitud cuál es su rol en este nuevo ecosistema. Mientras que el sector despliega la mayoría de sus activos en las websites, los jóvenes de 14 a 24 años han optado por consumir preferentemente los contenidos musicales que ellos mismos gestionan para la elaboración de sus playlist, hábito que ha desdibujado la incidencia del medio radio en su dieta mediática. De hecho, el 25% de los jóvenes muestran un desinterés manifiesto por la radio como medio de comunicación. Además, los que la escuchan, lo hacen de forma breve (el tiempo de exposición a los contenidos radiofónicos ronda los 15 minutos diarios) y desatenta (realizando otras actividades en simultaneidad). Sin embargo, la oferta
musical que ofrece la radio sigue siendo para ellos un referente a la hora de confeccionar las playlists que escucharán
en sus dispositivos móviles.

Resumen: En el momento actual se puede señalar una importante diversificación en los
modos de consumo de contenidos sonoros. La radio ha dejado de detentar la exclusiva de la
sono-esfera musical para compartir tiempos y espacios con otras plataformas 2.0 que
posibilitan una experiencia, a la vez personal y social, también en el móvil. Para encontrar su
espacio en la nueva ecología de medios las emisoras musicales deben apostar por fórmulas
comunicativas que le permitan fidelizar oyentes, especialmente entre las nuevas generaciones.
En esta línea el objeto del presente trabajo ha sido el de analizar la transposición de las
cadenas musicales españolas a las radioAPPs para conocer su grado de adaptación a los
smartphones así como el desarrollo de estrategias que aporten valor añadido a los oyentesusuarios.

Desde hace aproximadamente una década, la radio convencional catalana y española ha detectado una pérdida progresiva de penetración del medio entre los segmentos más jóvenes de la población. Este fenómeno afecta a la mayoría de los países desarrollados y está fuertemente relacionado con el
desarrollo de las TIC y las redes de comunicación. El objetivo
del presente artículo es profundizar en las causas de esta crisis
a partir del estudio de la recepción radiofónica de jóvenes
de entre 14 y 24 años que residen en Cataluña.

A interatividade ainda é um desafio na área da comunicação, muitos autores a interligam com os aparatos tecnológicos para motivar tal interação. Primo (2007, p. 33) faz uma ampla discussão sobre a interação mediada por computador que nos fez esco-lher a seguinte abordagem como conceito a discutir neste artigo: a interatividade é a oferta de um grande número de dados pré contidos em suporte digital, cujo fluxo de apresentação é disparado pelo usuário ao clicar em um botão ou link. Entendemos que o grande desafio está antes da ação do usuário, está em como os profissionais da comuni-cação pensam e compreendem a tal interatividade. Neste projeto procuramos aprofundar esta discussão e apresentar alguns recursos aplicados na Revista Já para tablets, que demonstram que uma representação estática pode se tornar mais atrativa e complemen-tar, com a adição de  simples elementos gráficos interativos.

Resumen Los jóvenes españoles –al igual que sus coetáneos de otros países desarrollados-son habitantes de los medios, más que utilizarlos, viven en ellos. En esta ponencia nos proponemos mostrar, en la línea de experimentos realizados con anterioridad en otros países, cómo un grupo de estudiantes de titulaciones de Comunicación de la Universidad de Vigo responden a un ayuno digital de 24 horas. Los alumnos deben renunciar al uso de cualquier aparato que utilice pantalla (teléfono móvil, ordenador, tableta, televisión) y a los reproductores de música (iPod y MP3). La finalidad es doble: en primer lugar la concienciación de los alumnos sobre su propia actitud ante los medios y en segundo lugar un análisis de las emociones y de los usos y gratificaciones que los usuarios buscan en los medios tecnológicos. A pesar de que más de 120 alumnos se mostraron dispuestos a realizar la desconexión digital, solamente 21 respondieron a la convocatoria. Este resultado nos lleva a pensar que deberíamos intentar realizar este experimento sin variar las condiciones de los anteriores, es decir, enmarcarlo dentro de una tarea académica, por mucho que nos pese eliminar la absoluta voluntariedad de la participación. Este método ha servido para que las personas que se han auto descartado del experimento manifestaran con absoluta libertad las razones para no hacerlo, por lo tanto, es un primer paso para acometer más adelante la desconexión digital como tarea académica.

This article focuses on the various spaces hosting the communication activities of European citizens in nine different countries. In contemporary societies, characterized by the pervasiveness of mobile devices and other media, space is key to understanding the everyday uses of media. Where people use media holds important implications for not only the daily routines of media usage but the meaning-making processes that media enable and sustain. On a theoretical level, this article introduces two interrelated concepts of domesticity and mobility to account for the contemporary configuration of private and public spaces of media use. On an empirical level, the article characterizes these configurations in the nine countries of the European study, identifying five patterns of media use across social spaces, and relating these patterns to sociodemographic as well as cross-national factors.

The present study examined how media type, presentation style, and user characteristics moderate people’s media experiences while reading on and listening to news messages. We found that content type, presentation modality and user characteristics all moderated the responses to the news messages. We found for example that (1) entertainment news were experienced as more pleasant and activating, but factual news as more interesting, important, and trustworthy, (2) Audio news with text captions elicited better memory performance and higher presence than text or audio only news, (3) fast picture presentation elicited higher activation than slow pictures among younger users whereas slow picture presentation elicited higher activation than fast pictures among older users. The results demonstrate the complex mixture of user (such as age, personality, and reading habits), presentation (such as medium, modality, speed), and content (such as fact and entertainment) characteristics in media experiences.

In 2013, 43% of the US population and 30% of the UK population owned a tablet of some kind. At the same time, marketing reports indicated that tablets would take over from desktop computers and laptops. Multiple reports in the technology press used the tag line ‘the year of the tablet’.

It was in this context, on 10th April 2013, that the editors of the volume published here hosted ‘The Tablet Symposium’ at the University of Sussex, UK. The symposium aimed to examine questions about the take up of tablets, readers and iPads across many walks of life, including academic, artistic, pedagogical, medical, corporate, activist and everyday contexts, and to create a space of dialogue, discussion and research community across these areas.

The Tablet Book builds on that event, gathering further research and commentary to mobilise a range of perspectives and approaches in thinking about and understanding the tablet computer. It is published by REFRAME Books in open access e-book formats both as a collection and as individual chapters.

During the rapid development of intelligent cities, advanced systems and technologies are widely used in these areas. In the current situation, virtual space and social networking with the help of smartphones are considered as parts of a new public space. The widespread use of smartphones has provided the necessary infrastructure to create the space for dialogue and information exchange in cyberspace. By replying emails, using search engines, private chats or engaging in social networks, anywhere can become a public space, even a private space. Most citizens use digital platforms in different areas of urban sectors which are recently developed as an intermediation space by digital services companies. Furthermore, in the public spaces such as street, park, or airport waiting room, etc., it is possible to create another public space using online smartphones for each individual. There are convergences between the online and offline worlds: a 'public' situation in the offline world can be also considered as such in the online world. Clearly, internet of things permits people to have private activities like chatting, reading, listening to music, participation in social programs, etc. in a public space. The public/private spaces in Iran as a case-study are constantly transforming and social, economic, and spatial parameters influence them. One of these parameters is social media which explores the practices and actions of subjects in public spaces as a disciplinary tool, which restructures space, time and the relations among activities promoted by scholars who have shown that technology is also a mean of saturating and sustaining contemporary capitalist societies. They also believe that social media is used in top-down and bottom-up movements, with individuals using technological devices to share and enhance their visibility in space and participation in socio-cultural movements. In Iran, citizens use new public sphere for environmental campaigns, helping and supporting national disasters like earthquakes, inundations or socio-political campaigns like supporting worker children or preventing destruction of historic monuments. They mobilize their users as a political force to claim for favorable regulations and legal changes and on the another side, there are local strategies and limitation for globalized digital platforms. Tali Hatuka believes that information technology radically affects transformation of social behaviors and urban movements. Theoretical and empirical gaps particularly emphasize that virtual communications alter the hierarchy of cities worldwide and social media constructs new socio-political interactions in public spaces. In the last few years, actors become major players of urban policies in relation of online-offline space with digital platforms. Finding new relationships between individuals and space, sociability, and communications leads me to rethink about the effects of information and communication technologies as social platforms and sociability in public spaces. The hypothesis of this research is that this new space, which is obtained by online smartphones, controls the structural space and relations among activities in public/private spaces. During working on different form of space, I was witnessed that the effect of this space is significant. To evaluate my hypothesis, I studied the social behavior of citizens in the public space in Tehran and its effects on urban movements and changing general politics. The objective of this research project is to analyze the emerging online/offline urban component of the spaces, which are extrapolated to a different socio-political context in minor and major spaces in a city like Tehran with all of limitations and sanctions. My main investigation is focusing on these questions: What are the social impacts of the use of the services provided by these platforms and who are the users? What are the effects of digital activities in the space development process with the existing sanctions and limitations?
