Este artículo ofrece una perspectiva panorámica, aunque necesariamente incompleta, sobre la teorización sociológica acerca de la “comunidad”, un concepto sociológico fundamental (en sí mismo, o en el contexto del par dicotómico que integra con otro concepto, el de “sociedad”), desde los clásicos de la disciplina hasta hoy. Sacrificando profundidad para ganar a cambio amplitud y perspectiva histórica, se sobrevuela primero el pensamiento sobre la comunidad de algunos clásicos (como Ferdinand Tönnies, Max Weber y Émile Durkheim) y luego el de Talcott Parsons. Luego, de manera más detallada, se analizan las concepciones de comunidad presentes en dos autores más recientes, Michel Maffesoli y Zygmunt Bauman. Este ejercicio, por un lado, se orienta a detectar las principales metamorfosis del concepto durante casi un siglo y medio, observando en los diferentes autores sus oscilaciones entre usos tipológico- científicos, históricos y utópicopolíticos de la comunidad. Por otro lado, al final, lanza algunas preguntas acerca de la (¿inextricable?) relación entre la sociología y los compromisos normativos.

Un apunte de clases. Cuatro páginas, tres resúmenes. Dos de una carilla, uno de dos carillas. Conceptos fundamentales, y la lógica interna de su teoría de la acción y los sistemas sociales. To date, the nascent consequential notion of 'multiple modernities' has been predominately grounded in historical research with the purpose of validating the theory. Yet, the notion of multiple modernities represents a radical transformation in the way modernity and, indeed, the contemporary world is viewed. As such, the central aim of this volume is to explore the implications and hidden understanding of the multiple modernitites research project beyond historical analysis in order to investigate its wide ranging omnipresent implications as they exist in communication and in the social order of societal membership in contemporary societies.
This volume collects new research about multiple modernities and globalization. Int shows the new turn of sociological theory in the contemporary scene with respect to multiple modernities, multi-centrism, transglobality, hybridization and multiculturalism, and explores it as a new area of societal communication - one that takes effect in the sectors of a global society as a 'society of societies'.
The studies in this book converge to demonstrate that the route of Western modernization, its cultural program and iths institutional structure, does not follow the pathway of modernization that we have that far observed in the emerged new area. Rather, the continuation of the multiple modernities research program is given a new design, researching the social structure and dynamic of postmodern societies, their exchange and the the debate about the flow of free resources.

Existing sociological studies of critical illness deal mainly with providers and families, but seldom with patients, themselves. Moreover, most of the literature on the patient's experience involves chronic illness. Based on the author's experience as an intensive care unit (ICU) patient, this paper demonstrates that certain concerns of the post-Parsonian literature, such as full disclosure of information to patients and patients' negotiation and collaboration with physicians, are of minimal relevance for critically ill patients. This paper also discusses the notebook the author used in the ICU to communicate while on a respirator, thus unintentionally leaving a concurrent record of his experience, in a form of "inadvertent ethnography.” This allowed him to reconstruct experiences rarely accessible to sociologists. Such notebooks can help us construct accounts of the ICU patient's experience, and move us towards a sociology of the critically ill patient. Potential topics for this new research area are suggested.

Nudging is a form of soft paternalism whereby governments manipulate the choice architectures of citizens to steer them toward desired outcomes (including eating better, voting more often, being less aggressive and violent, being more compassionate, living healthier, and leading more fulfilling lives). From the perspective of social activists (includ-ing moral entrepreneurs of various stripes), public health officials , social marketers, and government actors, the more subtle forms of nudging help mitigate populist backlash against nanny states which are viewed as overly aggressive and instrusive in mandating by force of law that citizens do what's best for them or face repurcussions. In his latest book, Cass Sunstein examines both the pros and cons of the use of behavioral economics by governments to nudge sometimes reluctant publics to pursue goals and establish lifestyles which experts believe will maximize life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

This paper argues that critical theory can benefit from a return to the structural-functionalist paradigm abandoned by contemporary thinkers such as Jurgen Habermas and Axel Honneth. It argues that the work of Talcott Parsons can be re-read to give critical theory a more satisfying explanation of the nature of modern forms of authority and domination. By placing emphasis on the ways in which values are inculcated in individuals mediating their personality development, Parsons is able to provide an important layer of understanding to the nature of modern society. I continue to argue for a fusion of Parsons' work with that of Marx, particularly his theory of ideology, in order to provide a critical framework for contemporary critical social theory.

Two standard interpretations of traditional action are rejected. Traditional action is not subjectively meaningful in the sense of having what Talcott Parsons calls a 'normative orientation'. But nor is traditional action a matter of blind habit. I contend, instead, that traditional action is subjectively meaningful insofar as the actor's seemingly aberrant behavior can be rendered intelligible by appeal to shared exemplars. I provide further evidence for the proposed interpretation of traditional action by showing how it illuminates Weber's account of traditional authority. The traditions that legitimize a traditional master consist, not just in rules or decisions, but in exemplars and precedents as found in the 'documents of tradition'. I conclude with a discussion of how the proposed account of traditional action and authority illuminates charismatic authority and Weber's notion of the irrational.

In sociology and criminology, a consensus has emerged since the 1980s that there exist three basic forms of social control: informal, legal, and medical. However, Talcott Parsons developed a typology of social control that added a fourth type, namely religious control, which was needed to maintain consistency with his four-function analytical schema. In addition, since the 1980s Michel Foucault's writings on social control have grown in influence in these fields. One particular aspect of Foucault's work appears to be both complementary to and subsumable under Parsons' grand AGIL schema. This is Foucault's concept of pastoral power, whose four elements or dimensions can be understood as having functional significance for religious social control as developed by Parsons. The study of religion always brings to bear the problem of transcendence, and along the way I confront pertinent elements of idealist philosophy, and especially the phenomenology of Husserl, in this attempt to overcome some of the admitted difficulties in bringing together the thought of Parsons and Foucault.

This book discribes the main current sociological paradigms. Attention is paid to the main focus of the theories and their methodological consequences. Teori struktural fungsional muncul dilatarbelakangi oleh perkembangan masyarakat yang dipengaruhi semangat renaissance. Pada saat itu muncul kesadaran baru tentang peran manusia yang semula dianggap tidak memiliki otoritas apapun untuk membangun kehidupan di dunia. Masyarakat beranggapan bahwa manusia tidak memiliki otoritas untuk menjelaskan fenomena dan mengelolanya karena semua ditentukan oleh yang "di atas". Secara singkatnya renaissance memunculkan bebagai perubahan dan formasi sosial baru yang diwarnai dengan revolusi politik. Jürgen Habermas has spent a long career developing a critical theory of reasoned communication, following Weber's idea concerning the negative aspects of rationalization in western society which places emphasis on technocratic or engineering solutions to problems in society. As the state gathers more power and resources to intervene in the lives of citizens (presumably for their benefit), citizens are less able to act on their own behalf to solve problems locally (i.e., the problem of the system colonizing the lifeworld). To assure reasoned communication and to preserve the lifeworld against the onslaught of instrumental rationality, Habermas locates the condition of reasoned communication within talk itself (by way of the validity claims). He extends this idea into political participation with the idea of deliberative democracy, whereby only the weight of the better argument prevails. Although primarily committed to critical theory, Habermas nevertheless borrows from Talcott Parsons' structural functionalist theory for its indispensable conceptualization of systems and normative solidarity. This tensionful mix of critical and technocratic-functional elements has been subject to criticism over the years, including the rise of postmodern theory which brings into doubt all modernist metanarratives seeking to conceptualize society in its totality. The paper ends with a consideration of how and to what extent Habermas's project withstands this postmodernist challenge.

Der Band analysiert die dominierenden Gesellschaftstheorien der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. So werden u.a. die Theorien von Talcott Parsons, Niklas Luhmann, Jürgen Habermas, Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucault und Raymond Boudon eingehend analysiert.  Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Theorie der dualen Struktur der Gesellschaft entwickelt, indem im Wesentlichen die Ansätze von Niklas Luhmann und Pierre Bourdieu kombiniert und die makropolitischen Analysen neogramscianischer Autoren, insbesondere von Kees van der Pijl, herangezogen werden.

Der folgende Beitrag stellt drei soziologische Kritikpunkte am Konzept rationalen Entscheidens dar. Genauer gesagt werden drei kritische Perspektiven auf zweckrationales Handeln vorgestellt, da in weiten Teilen der Soziologie der Handlungsbegriff eine prominentere Rolle spielt, als der Begriff des Entscheidens. Dabei wird erstens die mit Max Weber in Verbindung gebrachte Vorstellung erörtert, wonach zweckrationales Handeln nur eine mögliche Handlungsorientierung neben anderen und zudem vor allem von analytischer Bedeutung ist. Zweitens wird die Auffassung von Talcott Parsons vorgestellt, der zufolge auch zweckrationale Handlungen eine normative Basis haben und schließlich wird drittens die systemtheoretische Perspektive nachgezeichnet, aus welcher die Rationalität sozialer Systeme weder als Aggregat rationaler Einzelentscheidungen verstanden, noch durch hierarchisch organisierte Zweckverbände sichergestellt werden kann. Die Soziologie als entscheidungsfeindliche Disziplin?

Die Soziologie der Mitgliedschaft legt einen besonderen Anschnitt bei der Untersuchung der klassischen soziologischen Grundbegriffe Rolle, Status, Erwartungen und soziale Gruppe. Er besteht darin, dass sie im Hinblick auf die Strukturbestandteile sozialer Systeme zu untersuchen sind. Der Begriff der sozialen Gruppe wird in die Problemstufenordnung der Mitgliedschaftssoziologie Gesellschaft, Organisation und Interaktion eingeordnet. Sie ist jedoch keine eigene Ebene der Anordnung der Mitgliedschaft in sozialen Systemen auf der Problemstufenordnung. Gruppen bilden sich sozialsystem-, teilsystem- und organisationssystemtypisch. Sie können die sozialen Systeme, die Teilsysteme und das Organisationssystem auch übergreifen. Die Gruppensoziologie motivierte zu einer mitgliedschaftstheoretische Reinterpretation, da soziale Gruppen durch besondere Mitgliedschaftsbedingungen selbstdeterminiert sind.
Der Band führt in zentrale Grundbegriffe der Soziologie ein, die dem Soziologiestudenten eine Orientierung für die Beobachtung von Kommunikation und Mitgliedschaft bereitstellen. Er wertet soziologisches Wissen aus und führt die Kommunikation mit der Tradition des Faches fort.

Mills estudia los problemas teóricos, prácticos y morales de las ciencias
sociales y de las escuelas de sociología estadounidenses, y al mismo tiempo resulta una nueva formulación y una defensa del análisis sociológico clásico que da orientación cultural a nuestros estudios humanos.
La imaginación sociológica incluye al actor, la acción y las relaciones
sociales; por eso «ningún estudio social que no vuelva a los problemas de la
biografía, de la historia y de sus intersecciones dentro de la sociedad, ha
terminado su jornada laboral». Este tipo de imaginación capta lo que ocurre
en el mundo y lo que pasa en el individuo porque relaciona las inquietudes personales con los problemas públicos. Ésa es una distinción de toda obra clásica de ciencia social; es una cualidad mental particular que se opone a cualquier conjunto de técnicas burocráticas que impiden la investigación, precisamente por imponer metodologías de moda o conceptos oscuros sin relación con los problemas públicos importantes. El refinamiento escolástico de métodos y técnicas de investigación, conjugado con el formulismo de la teoría, es contrario a la imaginación sociológica.
Mills postula la imaginación sociológica como aquella que «permite a su
poseedor comprender el escenario histórico más amplio en cuanto a su
significado para la vida interior y para la trayectoria exterior de diversidad de individuos». Para conquistarla, se requería huir de los procedimientos rígidos, del fetichismo del método y de la técnica; no fanatizar modelo teórico alguno, estudiar estructuras sociales y evitar la especialización; romper las fronteras de las disciplinas y estar atento a la imagen de la humanidad o a la noción genérica de la naturaleza humana del momento; comprender a los humanos como actores históricos-sociales y, sobre todo, jamás renunciar a la autonomía moral y política. Tres términos sintetizan esta imaginación sociológica: heterodoxia, autonomía y principios normativos.

El concepto de clase social posee relevancia transversal para la teoría sociológica. A pesar de esto, persiste una falta de conocimiento sobre su uso por parte de enfoques distintos a la tradición marxista o weberiana. En este sentido, merecen especial los teóricos funcionalistas o socio-sistématas que han incorporado este concepto en sus propios planteamientos. Con el objetivo de avanzar en este punto, el presente texto explora los conceptos de clase social en las dos figuras más relevantes de dicha tradición teórico-sociológica: Talcott Parsons y Niklas Luhmann. Luego de analizar los conceptos de clase social de ambos autores, se comparan las convergencias y divergencias entre ellos, se evalúa la posición de este concepto en la teoría de sistemas sociales y sus aportes a la teoría sociológica en general.

Il presente scritto si colloca nell’ottica di fornire un modello generale di analisi delle organizzazioni come sistemi sociali, utile a comprenderne il funzionamento, gli aspetti problematici (che sostengono gli interventi di sviluppo) e l’evoluzione del contesto. Si tratta di un approccio di tipo struttural-funzionale ispirato al sociologo americano Talcott Parsons e declinato in strumenti dalla chiara finalità metodologica (metodologia di analisi organizzativa) e didattica. La descrizione degli elementi della struttura e lo stesso modello esplicativo (ASIL) delle esigenze funzionali di una organizzazione (che vuole, proprio perché generale, mettere al riparo da approcci troppo “particolari”) si traducono in indicazioni operative ed esemplificazioni, utili ad un utilizzo del modello nella prassi consulenziale.

Despite the fact that, during the 60s and 70s, social tensions exposed weaknesses in its foundational precepts, themes from the Structural-Functionalist school of thought continue to underpin contemporary approaches to organizational and societal challenges.

Traducción propia de un célebre artículo del sociólogo inglés David Lockwood, del año 1964. Como no pude encontrar ninguna versión en castellano del mismo, realicé esta traducción 'provisional' en el año 2006, con fines pedagógicos. La misma conserva algunas correcciones, aclaraciones, e incluso la indicación de algunas dificultades de traducción, marcadas entre corchetes. La publico por este medio por primera vez, con la finalidad de difundir uno de los textos más influyentes del pensamiento sociológico del siglo XX, para los lectores de habla castellana. Se ruega citar la fuente, en caso de difundirlo por otros medios.

Parsons: La acción como sistema. Del acto unidad hacia el sistema de acción. Puede decirse que el factor primario en la teoría de Parsons es el " acto unidad " el cual se traduce en simples palabras a la acción realizada por un agente en diferentes situaciones de la acción, mediadas por diversos factores externos al individuo como lo son la sociedad y la cultura –condiciones-, pautadas dependiendo del medio ambiente y condiciones de vida en las que se encuentra el individuo-medios-, y dirigidas para alcanzar un determinado fin –orientación normativa-el cual se puede lograr o no dependiendo de los medios y condiciones con que disponga dicho sujeto; todos estos elementos se encuentran entrelazados entre sí, y en su conjunto serían los cuales componen el llamado marco de referencia de la acción. A todo esto se le debe sumar que el término de acción para el autor " es un proceso en el sistema actor-situación que tiene significado motivacional para el actor individual o, en el caso de una colectividad, para sus componentes individuales. " (Parsons, 1956, pág. 16) Esto quiere decir que la orientación de la acción está ligada a la esperanza de la obtención de una gratificación o evitación de privaciones presentes tanto en el medio social como el personal en el que se desenvuelve el actor. Así definida, " es una propiedad fundamental de la acción no constituir " respuesta " ad hoc a " estímulos " particulares de la situación; por el contrario, el actor desarrolla un sistema de " expectativas " en relación con los diferentes objetos de la situación. " (Parsons, 1956, pág. 16) Cada acción funciona como una especie de contrato, en el cual ego actúa esperando cierta retribución por parte de alter, transformándose así la acción en una interacción entre sujetos, lo que practicado a gran escala termina por conformar un sistema social. Especificando lo último, según el autor, un sistema social consiste básicamente " en una pluralidad de actores individuales que interactúan entre sí en una situación que tiene, al menos, un aspecto físico o de medio ambiente " , (Parsons, 1956, pág. 17) en donde los actores se ven inclinados a obtener el mejor nivel de gratificación posible, " y cuyas relaciones con sus situaciones –incluyendo a los demás actores-están mediadas y definidas por un sistema de símbolos culturalmente estructurados y compartidos. " (Parsons, 1956, pág. 17) Cabe señalar, que para Parsons, el factor cultural es un punto clave tanto para la conformación del sujeto como de la sociedad en la que este se encuentra. " los valores culturales se realizan en el sistema social, organizan el sistema de la personalidad y penetran hasta el «ello» freudiano del organismo. " (Almaraz, 1979, pág. 27) En resumen, según la teoría de Parsons, el acto unidad sería la acción básica que realiza un sujeto o actor para lograr algún fin, considerando así diferentes factores externos que determinan las diferentes formas en las cuales el individuo puede proceder en la interacción con un alter intentando en todo momento obtener un máximo de gratificación. En esta interacción es donde nos topamos con el sistema de acción, que se traduce a las condiciones con las cuales debe lidiar el sujeto para lograr la meta anteriormente nombrada. En este sistema se pueden encontrar básicamente tres subsistemas que se entrelazan y guían el proceder de ego, y estos serían el sistema social, el sistema cultural y el sistema de la personalidad del sujeto-estas categorías si bien contienen cualidades diferentes que permiten distinción entre ellas, necesitan unas de otras para existir y retroalimentarse constantemente.-Estos subsistemas serán los que determinarán tanto el canal, el código, el medio y el nivel de gratificación que se puede alcanzar utilizando los diferentes medios disponibles en el sistema de acción. Notoriamente a mi parecer, todo esto tiene su base en el acto comunicativo, y de esta forma es entendible que la acción como la entiende Parsons, termine por cumplir una función social.

Versión original, del año 2005, del texto sobre el cual he basado durante años mis exposiciones sobre Parsons en la UBA, la UNL, Flacso,  la Unsam, etc. De la misma han circulado múltiples versiones apócrifas, bajo la forma de desgrabaciones, compilaciones de apuntes, etc., que aún es posible encontrar en internet, pero que contienen múltiples errores y desprolijidades, tanto conceptuales, como expositivas y de redacción.. Esta versión escrita, si bien es la primera, contiene algunas modificaciones menores en la exposición añadidas para esta publicación..
Como es muy larga, se recomienda leerla por partes, de acuerdo al índice de contenidos que se ha agregado al principio.

This book addresses two main questions: 1. What can the concept of
political culture be taken to mean if it is to be a tenable social science
concept? 2. Can it be used in causal or non-causal explanations of political phenomena? The analysis is based on the premise that a scientific concept should be capable of demonstrating its utility by being used, among other things, in explanations. In the book the various ways in which political culture is conceptualized in political science literature, and also at times in some other fields, are examined and subjected to critical evaluation.

This article addresses the theory of action and systems theory in the works of Talcott Parsons and Jürgen Habermas. It is divided in two main parts: the first presents the key stages of Parsons’ theoretical evolution and the second deals with the critical reconstruction of the Parsonian theory by Habermas. Based on a presentation of Parsons’ theory, the primary objective of this article is to highlight how this author’s theoretical legacy reverberates in contemporary social theory, as exemplified in the critical appropriation of the Parsonian proposal by Habermas’ theory of communicative action.

This is a very early paper, a version of which showed up in my 1990 Virginia Tech master's thesis.  Parts of this also informed my 1993 paper on Durkheim and Goffman.  It is very early giddiness about Durkheim the Great.  I have since abandoned such heavy breathing for theorists.

During the first half of the 20th century Talcott Parsons developed his social theory of functionalism. His synthesis of the insights of Durkheim, Webber, and others provided the corner stone for his "grand theory." Parsons' functionalism takes the form of a schema or descriptive framework of society, its component parts, and the interactions between them. Post-WW2 the new framework was widely welcomed by the growing army of researchers conducting empirical research into social phenomena, but it was fiercely criticised by social theorists. As a consequence, new variants of functionalism were developed, existing programmes were reexamined , and new schools evolved. This article first describes func-tionalism and examines some current schools of social theory in relation to it. Then it examines the use made of social theory by OR researchers to develop an understanding of the context of OR interventions, underpin the development of OR methods, provide methods and frameworks for empirical research, inform and motivate critique of OR practice and research, and contribute to sociology. This article demonstrates that functionalism offers a point of entry for OR researchers intent on gaining an understanding of social theories, a notoriously difficult subject on which all sociological theorising is founded.
