O acompanhamento musical das práticas esportivas é uma característica marcante dos jogos na Grécia antiga, seja nos treinamentos, seja nas competições. Este acompanhamento se dava com instrumentos de sopro, especificamente o aulos e a salpinx (trombeta). Amplamente representado na pintura dos vasos áticos de figuras negras e de figuras vermelhas (séc. VI-V a.C.), o acompanhamento das práticas atléticas com o aulos, sobretudo nas provas que integram o pentatlo, tem recebido maior atenção dos estudiosos. Nosso objetivo é abordar a presença da trombeta nos jogos, representada com menos frequência no registro iconográfico, porém informada pelas fontes literárias de diferentes períodos, sobretudo do período imperial (nomeadamente, Plutarco, Ateneu e Pólux). Analisaremos as seguintes situações: acompanhamento musical de corridas (a pé ou de quadriga), contribuindo para marcar o ritmo; celebrações de entrega de prêmios; função comunicativa, pela divulgação de anúncios por intermédio da emissão de sinais; competições para trombeteiros, relacionadas à constituição de um perfil social deste músico-atleta baseado na força muito acima da média. Esta força superlativa, misturada com costumes bizarros, faz do trombeteiro um tipo popular no mundo helenístico-romano.

Erétrie est l'une de ces cités qui ont fait la grandeur de la Grèce antique. Son territoire est occupé depuis le début du III e millénaire av. J.-C. De ce long passé, la ville a conservé d'importants vestiges: le Théâtre, le Sanctuaire d'Apollon, plusieurs autres temples et sanctuaires, le Gymnase Nord, des quartiers d'habitation, quelques chefs-d'oeuvre artistiques (sculptures, vases), de nombreuses inscriptions sur pierre, des monnaies. Le musée et les sols de la Maison aux mosaïques offrent un re et de ces splendeurs passées. L'ancienne Erétrie a connu une nouvelle vie depuis le XIX e siècle. L'exploration des vestiges du passé a commencé voici environ 125 ans et elle se poursuit. Le présent volume, richement illustré de photographies, de plans et de dessins, retrace l'histoire de la ville et de ses habitants et présente une description détaillée de ses monuments.

"Over a century, the excavations conducted in the ancient city of Eretria have unearthed some ten urban sanctuaries dating from the Geometric to the end of the roman Imperial period. Although the divinities worshipped in these shrines have been most of the time identified, their functions and rituals need to be specified. At present, it remains difficult to achieve a comprehensive overview of the urban sanctuaries of Eretria.
But in the last decades, three sanctuaries have provided valuable archaeological evidence for understanding the religious practices of the Eretrians during the Geometric and Archaic Periods (8th-6th centuries BCE): the sanctuary of Apollo Daphnephoros, tutelary divinity of the city, an anonymous sacrificial area found nearby, and the sanctuary of Athena on the acropolis. Based on the archaeological evidence, it is now possible to enjoy a better understanding of the sacrifices, the vessels used for the cult, and the offerings. In this paper, I will attempt to summarize the features of ritual practice in the Archaic period. I will highlight the differences between the cults, as they seemed to be influenced by different factors, such as the personality of the divinity, the nature of the ritual, the identity of the worshipers (according to gender and social status), and the social changes that would have occurred within the religious community."

This new companion (edited by Patrick Finglass and Adrian Kelly) aims to incorporate the newest finds of Sappho's poetry into an overall study of her importance in the ancient world and her reception into the modern. The cast list and proposed structure can be found in the attached document.

Among the different burial customs existing in the necropolis of Orthi Petra, including pyres with tumuli, chamber tombs, rock-cuts, and open-air graves, the use of burying within big pithoi or into smaller vessels is not of secondary relevance. The presence of enchytrismoi is not heterogeneously widespread at the entire excavated area of the necropolis. A vast concentration of pithos burials is located in the North area, lesser at the North-East and increasing to the North-West, where the terracing land slopes. Few others are situated towards South as well. An amount of around fifty enchytrismoi comprises pithoi and other wares in little number. A good quantity is well-preserved, some are in situ not excavated yet and few more are not possible to be properly examined due to their delicate conditions. Moreover, it is worth mentioning the so-called ‘pseudotholos’, an area featured by a series of three pithoi partially sheltered in a rock-cut, oriented East-West and flanked by worked stones at its westernmost side, as a way of access.
This paper examines some preliminary aspects of these burials, as a start of my Ph.D. research, where I try to focus on their typological aspects, aiming at delineating the shapes of the pithoi and other vessels, decorations, production techniques, and eventually, further specific characteristics to determine their classification. Additionally, another objective is to find comparanda within the Cretan island and in the rest of the Greek world.

The last three decades have seen the publication of a number of key studies on Naukratis (Kom Ge'if), the earliest known Greek colony in Egypt. Foremost are the reports of the surveys and excavations carried out at Naukratis during 1977Naukratis during -1978Naukratis during and in three seasons between 1980Naukratis during and 1982 In a special volume of the series Venit has brought together all the painted Greek pottery from the site in Egyptian museums. 2 No less important are the recent papers by Bowden on the shrines and pottery dating, 3 the new discussion by Gorton of the scarabs, 4 the volume by Möller on Naukratis as a trading centre 5 and the proceedings of a conference held in 1999. 6 Inevitably, though to differing degrees, these studies touch on the longstanding and tangled question of chronology -one that arose almost as soon as Petrie discovered the site in 1884. The main difficulty has always been to reconcile the literary evidence for the early history of Naukratis (principally Herodotus) with the results of excavation. While most archaeologists since Petrie have tended to date the earliest Greek pottery at the site to the mid or late 7th century BC, Herodotus stated that Naukratis was given to the Greeks as a trading colony by Pharaoh Amasis, whose reign began in 570 BC. This raises a clear philosophical dilemma, neatly characterised by Bowden: should the pottery dating correct Herodotus, or Herodotus correct the pottery dating? The present article will review the problem and place it in the wider context of an ongoing debate over Archaic Greek chronology. 1

The presently accepted ceramic chronology places the earliest episodes of Greek colonisation in Libya some three to four decades earlier than the traditional historical dates. A similar offset between the archaeological and historical chronologies can be seen at Naukratis and other Archaic Greek sites. A review of ‘fixed points’ for Archaic dating shows that the balance of evidence now strongly favours a reduction of late seventh to early sixth century BC Greek ceramic chronology by three to four decades. Such a reduction would bring harmony between the archaeological and historical pictures for the founding of the Cyrenaican colonies, restoring confidence in the account given by Herodotus.

This book is a study prepared on the forms and usage of the containers
used for the purposes of Ancient Greek and Roman Era.
These containers made of terracotta, stone, glass, wood and various
metals, often used in religious ceremonies and burial and in
various stages of daily life, from eating and the drinking culture,
to the cleaning understanding. These containers are designed
for solid or liquid objects and is produced depending on their
use, large or small, broad or narrow, deep or shallow form. This
study, the containers primarily grouped according to intended
use, presented under the headings like Cooking Containers,
Cooling Containers, Kitchen Utensils, Kitchenware, Storage and
Transport Containers, Mixing Containers, Liquid Service Containers,
Liquid Tableware, Solid Tableware, Dinner Ware, Waste-
Cleaning Containers, Personal Maintenance Vessels, Ritual-Cult
Vessels. Each container discussed under this heading were assessed
in itself. Firstly, it disclosed the name of the vessel and
the origin of the name and known early examples, then made
the definition of forms, emphasized form features, significant
form changes that occur over time has been explained briefly.
Finally, it disclosed information regarding the use of the vessel,
on the functions of these containers has made assessments in
the light of the Ancient sources and modern research. This study
enriched with digital information on their use details like the sizes
and volumes of containers. In the end of study, for a better
understanding of the subject, tables been presented about the
volumes and functions of containers. The pictures and drawings
of the containers have been placed so that get a better perception
of the form of containers.

"According to ancient literary accounts, almost all of the early Greek colonies in the Black Sea area were founded by the Ionian city of Miletos. A connection to Ionia is indeed apparent from the large quantities of imported Ionian pottery at Black Sea sites.However, a substantial amount of local reduction-fired Grey Ware pottery that is closely related to Aeolian pottery can be identified in ceramic assemblages of the Archaic period in the early Milesian apoikiai. Moreover, recent archaeometric analyses have shown that a
substantial amount of Aeolian pottery was imported into the Black Sea area. This article stresses the need to recognize a more active involvement of the Aeolians in the Greek colonial venture around the Black Sea, and specifically the migration of Aeolian potters."

Pottery production has a long tradition in Northern Greece and in particular in the region of Macedonia. The archaeological research of the last decades has brought to light significant quantities of local pottery along with a number of pottery workshop remains, increasing our knowledge in the field.
Focus of this paper is to explore some of the pottery workshops that were active in the area during the Archaic period. A presentation of the known up to date remains of the installations in combination with local production of ceramics, form the outline of the paper. Based on that, they are addressed certain questions regarding the operation of the pottery workshops, their location and their production. Representative examples of categories of vessels formed in the region are also briefly presented, in order to understand better the pottery production in Northern Greece during the Archaic times.

Abstract: The present paper offers a new theory with regard to the Greek presence at Naukratis during the late 7th and the first half of the 6th century BC, emphasising the hitherto unacknowledged role of Lydians as mediators between Egypt and Greeks. After establishing a reliable chronological framework for Naukratis’ foundation, it is suggested that the initial establishment of Greek commercial settlement at Naukratis should be seen as a by-product of the treaty that was contracted between Lydia and Miletus toward the end of the 7th century BC. Concerning the next significant phase of Naukratis’ history, which took place during the reign of Amasis and was accompanied by administrative reform and the construction of the Hellenion, it is suggested that only the Greek poleis that found themselves under the aegis of the Lydian empire, or who were on friendly terms with it, could officially operate on Egyptian soil during this period. Revealing the Lydian connection behind the commercial activities of Greeks in Naukratis, against the background of Lydian imperial aspirations, allows better understanding of contact zones in antiquity.

ABSTRACT Although Greek contacts with the Southern Levant during the Iron Age have been studied at length, the matter remains controversial in many aspects. The present study provides an overview of East-West contacts during the first half of the 1st millennium BC, suggesting to divide it into five major periods of contact. These periods, involving a different chronological setting, are characterized by different ‘total contexts’, heavily shaped by geopolitical dynamics. It is suggested that every period of contacts (or their absence) requires a different explanation.

Early Greek alphabetic writing has received extensive attention in the literature. Yet such writing is often treated as immaterial, both literally and metaphorically. My study addresses this problem by offering a systematic investigation of the material properties of nearly 300 inscribed objects, mostly ceramic, that date from ca. 750-600 BCE and originate from seven sites across the Greek world. Inspired by work on classical art and text, and on the materiality of writing, I use a quantitative approach to investigate the ways in which early inscriptions interact with the fabric, the shape, and the decoration of the vessels on which they are rendered, reflecting also on the ramifications of this interaction for the socialization of early Greek inscribed objects in diverse contexts. The investigation exposes a range of hitherto neglected patterns attesting to the preferential inscribing and use of particular types of vessels in specific sites or contexts, and to the association of certain types of text with the material properties of the medium that carries it. More broadly, I argue that Greek epigraphy would benefit from methodologies that promote the documentation and interpretation of not only the textual but also the material properties of inscribed objects.

Miniature pottery is a widely encountered group of archaeological material that has been found in domestic, funerary, and predominantly in ritual contexts. Despite the ubiquitous presence of these small vessels, this group is generally understudied and interpretations of its meaning are lacking. Scholarship in the past perceived miniature pottery as cheap, non-functional and unimportant and therefore this pottery was often neglected or sometimes not even published. Interpretations have been sparse and by default it is believed that miniatures were the cheap- est dedications the worshipper could buy. Within the last decade(s) the perceptions among scholars have changed somewhat and when miniature pottery and other votives appear together in an excavation it is often interpreted as a votive deposit stemming from a ritual context, such as a temple, shrine or sanctuary. Below a tentative terminology of miniature pottery will be presented and it will be argued that there is more to be learned about Greek ritual practice from this understudied group of archaeological material, for instance, how miniatures were used in rituals.

This volume is designed as a wide-ranging analysis of ceramic standardization and variation, and as a contribution to pottery studies in the Mediterranean and beyond. It originates in a conference session in the 16th annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists which was held in the Hague, the Netherlands, and was organized by the research team of the project New Perspectives on Ancient Pottery (NPAP) of the Amsterdam Archaeological Centre, University of Amsterdam.

Some of the most enduring questions archaeologists raise are explicitly or implicitly formulated around the concepts of standardization and variation. Yet, the significance of these concepts has rarely been acknowledged in archaeological literature and their full potential for the study of ancient culture remains under-explored. To demonstrate the significance of these concepts for the study of material culture, we adopt here a cross-cultural and diachronic perspective. The individual chapters cover a variety of case studies, ranging from Spanish handmade pottery to John Beazley’s Greek vase painters. The range of approaches pursued is equally broad and involves traditional stylistic analyses, applications of archaeological science, statistical methodologies, and post-processual considerations. The result will hopefully stimulate pottery experts and specialists in other categories of artifact to revisit their material from different and fresh angles.

In The Rise of the Greek Aristocratic Banquet, Wecowski offers a comprehensive account of the origins of the symposion and its close relationship with the rise of the Greek city-state or polis. Broadly defined as a culture-oriented aristocratic banquet, the symposion—which literally means 'drinking together'—was a nocturnal wine party held by Greek aristocrats from Homer to Alexander the Great. Its distinctive feature was the crucial importance of diverse cultural competitions, including improvising convivial poetry, among the guests. Cultural skills and abilities were a prerequisite in order for one to be included in elite drinking circles, and, as such, the symposion served as a forum for the natural selection of Greek aristocracy.
