Teacher training is related to student success, but teachers often join the profession unprepared.
Training in-service, or professional development events, are commonly used to address this situation. There is
no consensus on just what key elements of an appropriate professional development program should be
included.
Conversely, successful professional development includes teachers in learning environments that
are inclusive, occupationally rooted, educationally oriented, collaborative and ongoing. The school leaders will
create positive learning environments for all teachers when driven by these characteristics.
Consequently, findings indicate that any effective professional development activity should consist of
the following components: 1) a match to existing teacher needs, 2) a match to existing school needs, 3)
teacher involvement in the design/planning of professional development activities, and 4) active participation
opportunities.
Furthermore, researchers long have recognized that teachers’ professional development is essential to
changing classroom practice, improving schools, and ameliorating pupils’ learning outcomes (Borko, 2004).
Professional learning often takes place in formal settings, such as professional development programmes,
teaching research groups, and formal mentoring programmes (Timperley, 2011). Teachers also can learn
through informal interactions that occur during peer teaching, collaborative planning, and mentoring between
colleagues (Little, 2012).
In Grade one teaching, Professional Development has affected the strategies of teachers to align their
teaching strategies to improve the learning of Grade one students. These strategies differ from strategies for
higher levels as Grade one students should be considered with their authentic and different individualized
learning styles as they are first hand learners.
