    PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION

    1. Explain and explore this statement: Globalization as externally driven changes in


    education. Among the reasons for this change include the assertion that vision provides
    direction and an opportunity to engage in developing and introducing innovations in the
    provisions of education, and affords institutions to gain forward momentum as current
    status of institutions and programs needs are assessed and carried forward to the future.
    In the light of these changes in education, what are the different philosophies that
    influence globalization and why? The process of envisioning involves among others
    brainstorming and free discussion of philosophical ideas, beliefs, theories and scenarios
    in education: programs, students, teachers, curriculum, teaching-learning processes,
    graduates, assessment, among others. This also includes discussions on school’s core
    values, guiding principles, and institutional beliefs. The whole point of this exercise is to
    establish shared beliefs that will constitute the philosophical foundation of education and
    the future of institution or program.

    Your own ideas, beliefs, theories and scenarios in education and/or program are crucial
    toward building that philosophical foundation. For this exercise, you are given the
    opportunity to clarify these and have them counted as integral part of the school’s or
    program’s future. (25 pts.)

    Extend your discussion to include narratives of the scenarios as individually informed by


    different philosophical theories vis-à-vis: design of curriculum, teaching and learning
    designs, design of assessment and use of the results, students’ learning experiences, and
    the knowledge that students will gain from such teaching and learning experiences.

    2. What are the emerging images of educational reforms as discussed from the different
    philosophies of education? 20 pts

    3. What is your personal assessment about the emerging image of globalization in


    education. 10 pts

    4. Suppose for the sake of argument we grant that the failure to produce the ideal citizen is
    not solely a problem of formal education, that it could be a political failure, a cultural
    failure, or whatever: still we can ask what is the failing of formal education in this
    process. There are all sorts of possible reasons for educational failure: poor teachers,
    poor students, poor courses, poor sequence of courses, too many students per teacher,
    etc. 20 pts

    [Notes: Again, do some additional library works, refresh your foundations courses in
    education, your old notes from your previous courses, and most importantly reflect on your
    own professional experiences as educator, administrator, or an engaged faculty. Reflect,
    theorize, and/or hypothesize to get to your professional response. Write your own response
    independently.

    For each term or phrase, provide a short paragraph or statement explaining what these
    terms/phrase mean. Differentiate them. Be specific and clear, answers need not be long. Choose
    5 out 12 items. (5 pts each)
