Assessment Task 2 – Practical Task

The assessment task is due on the date specified in your timetable. Any variations to this arrangement must be
approved in writing by your assessor.

This assessment is to be completed in the classroom / workshop / simulation setting at Harward International College.
The required submission should be done by completing the work within the scheduled period for unit in accordance
with instructions given below.

This assessment requires you to demonstrate your ability to use explosive power tools by completing a significant work
assignment. The assessor may provide the response, based on the observation (direct / indirect / supplementary) in
the checklist (marking guide) given in this task.

• Direct – such as an observation of workplace performance by an assessor


• Indirect – such as a portfolio of evidence
• Supplementary – such as supervisor reports.

The task has assessment activities, designed to assess your skills, knowledge and performance, as required to show
competency in this unit. You should complete these as stated below and as instructed by your trainer / assessor.
Skills, knowledge and performance may be termed as:

• Skills – skill requirements, required skills, essential skills, foundation skills


• Knowledge – knowledge requirements, required knowledge, essential knowledge, knowledge evidence
• Performance – evidence requirements, critical aspects of assessment, performance evidence.

To complete this project, you will need access to the following:


• A simulated workplace that will allow you access to:
▪ A workplace supervisor (your assessor)
▪ Workplace resources, tools and equipment needed to complete the Practical Assessment in accordance
with the unit of competency requirements
• Templates and documentation needed to complete this assessment are provided in this workbook.

Task Instructions
In this task, you will demonstrate your ability to fix metal and timber to one steel base, one concrete base, and one
masonry base to job specifications, including:
• completion of stripping and assembly of the tool
• completing log of serviceability
• maintaining and cleaning
• selecting charges and fasteners applicable to base material and material being fixed
• misfire procedures
• using attachments
• complying with storage and security regulations and WHS requirements for the working environment
• selecting signage
• test fire

During completion of this task, you have to go through the Appendices, Code of Practices, and relevant documentation
provided with this task.

For the above points to be covered, you are required to complete:

Part 3: Operate EPT


Part 4: Maintain, store EPT and clean-up site

Part 1: Plan and prepare


For this part, you have to:
• Review and clarify task to set up, operate and maintain indirect action EPTs.
• Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.
• Identify safety signage and barricade requirements.
• Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative
requirements.
• Calculate material quantity requirements.
• Check EPTs for operation in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and safety requirements for use
of EPT.

Part 2: Establish set out distances for EPT fasteners


For this part, you have to:
• Erect identified safety signage and barricades, and fit personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Select fastener in accordance with requirements of the job.
• Set-out fasteners adhering to minimum distances for set out from edge of substrate material in accordance
with requirements.
• Position material, check it is level, and temporarily fix or clamp into designed position in accordance with
detailed drawings.

Part 3: Operate EPT


For this part, you have to:
• Select charge in accordance with the requirements for material, base and penetration.
• Install any attachments and accessories to EPT in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and WHS
requirements.
• Load fastener and charge into EPT in accordance with manufacturers’ specification.
• Carry out EPT operation and fix fastener into place in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and
legislative requirements.
• Check depth of fastening penetration and adjust power regulating device in accordance with conditions.
• Carry out misfire procedures in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and legislative requirements.
• Remove temporary holdings and fixings without damage to material.

Part 4: Maintain, store EPT and clean-up site


For this part, you have to:
• Check safety features of tools for serviceability in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
• Clean and lubricate tools in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
• Carry out periodic maintenance service in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
• Replenish diminished stocks of charges and fasteners to designed effectiveness of EPT kit.
• Check and complete logbook and record maintenance in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications.
• Store used charges in designated container in accordance with requirements.
• Store unused fasteners, the EPT and attachments in a carry case in line with manufacturers’ specifications.
• Clear work area and dispose of, re-use or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes
of practice and task requirements.
• Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and
workplace requirements.
