What is this, 1671?
The six women arrested were part of a group called Youth Demand. They're planning on taking action in London every day of April to protest the government's continued support of genocide in Gaza and approval of climate wrecking plans like the third heathrow runway. They have a fundraiser you can support for them to be able to cover things such as transport, food and legal costs, they're less than £5,000 away from their target
This is the worst Eid I have ever experienced in my entire life. I lost all my friends in the war and I am left alone here suffering from the pain of loss. I used to go and visit my friends, but today I went to their homes and found their mothers collapsing from crying and grieving over the loss of their sons. We used to meet and go out and spend a pleasant time together, but unfortunately today I went and visited them in the cemetery and sat next to them all day crying from the intensity of my pain and regret. How difficult this feeling is for me and I cannot bear it!!! 😭

huh weird.
the thing about being nonbinary is that you really do start to forget that other people have such strict walls around what is and isn’t allowed for genders. i thought we all agreed that we made that up. could you climb out of the cave real quick and feel the sunshine for a minute.
Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now
He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.
For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.
Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.
He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor
Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going
For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.
He has yielded the floor at 25 hrs and 4 mins. His eyes are so wide they look like they’re going to bug out of his skull so I don’t blame him for stopping. He said to go out and get in some good trouble.
Addition for those unaware: Cory Booker is black. Strom Thurmond set the previous record about 70 years ago in protest of civil rights. Booker spent much of the time I was watching talking about the importance of working together for the people and the idea that it's not "left versus right but right versus wrong."
The new record speech is on the right side of history.
Fucking wild to be teaching about Rosa Parks at the same time as a trans woman in Florida does an act of civil disobedience to use a women's restroom in the state capitol
As far as I know, she is the first woman arrested bc of this law. The law requires that the trans person be warned to leave the bathroom by a state official, and then if they stay they are guilty of trespassing after a warning.
So like, me, my gf, others just piss and nobody asks or tells, but this young woman sent a statement about the law to over 100 FL lawmakers so they would know she was coming, the cops were ready for her, she brought a reporter and went in anyway and spent the night in a men's jail. She is out on bail, and is hoping this will inspire change of the law. But if found guilty, and the law is upheld as constitutional, then she could spend up to 60 days in a mens county jail.
this trans day of visibility, i want to highlight and celebrate intersex trans people.
society ignores intersex trans people and tries to erase this overlap. and also ignores complex intersex experiences around gender. society denies our intersexuality, or our transness, or both. even in queer circles we are often seen as "basically cis" or "basically trans" or "intersex aka own separate species that can have nothing in common with other queer people."
intersex trans people are often denied gender affirming care. intersex trans people get their bodily autonomy attacked both as intersex and trans. even in trans accepting circles like gender clinics, we often face ignorance and incompetence.
people feel entitled to know and question our anatomy, physiology, transition goals, identities — everything about us.
our bodies belong to us. our identities belong to us. our experiences belong to us.
we deserve bodily autonomy. we deserve representation. we deserve recognition. we deserve celebration. we deserve pride.
intersex trans people, i love you.
one critical piece of advice is that opportunities are fractal doorways
you can take an opportunity that seems small, a group meeting for an hour once a week let's say, and if you really commit and put a lot of effort into even a small opportunity, if you work to prop open that passageway, then you will find that it can surprisingly quickly multiply into many future possibilities, many future paths.
one of the members of your small book club desperately needs a babysitter for the weekend. that's a gig. another one hits it off with you on some obscure topic. the bulletin board at the place you meet has a flyer for a class on writing. you go, and now you're in an environment full of other people who are there for the same reasons. talk to them. over drinks one night an older member encourages you to apply for uni with one of your short stories you wrote for the class. et cetera.
I spent a lot of time paralyzed with indecision, trying to find just the right opportunity to get me where i wanted to go. that's the entirely wrong way to go about it. practice pursuing possibilities is more important than optimizing your choice of path, waiting for just the perfect opportunity to magically drop into your lap. It likely won't happen like that, it's not necessary, and you don't need to live your whole life at once. Frodo didn't arrive at Mt Doom by making the optimal choice on the first crossroads out of the shire.
Instead cultivate an attitude of engagement with whatever imperfect seemingly insignificant opportunities that are already in front of you, and keep an open mind & eyes, and trust in the fractal nature of reality. look for threads to pull, opportunities to pursue, and engage with people as if every one of them has something new to teach you, and somewhere new to take you that you've never been. they probably do. the more you engage the more you'll find out that this is true; trust that paths will lead to more paths even if you can't see them yet. trust that the big scary void question mark of a future contains not only unseen dangers but also an unseen unfurling infinity of options and paths, friends and lovers, work and play. i love u

“The daily routine of most adults is so heavy and artificial that we are closed off to much of the world. We have to do this in order to get our work done. I think one purpose of art is to get us out of those routines. When we hear music or poetry or stories, the world opens up again. We’re drawn in — or out — and the windows of our perception are cleansed, as William Blake said. The same thing can happen when we’re around young children or adults who have unlearned those habits of shutting the world out.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin
Not that it's anything new, but the "voluntary" in "voluntary migration" really drives home the utter shamelessness of the occupation.
They destroy Gazan homes, hospitals, schools, roads, universities, infrastructure, cut off their water and electricity, then when they have no choice but to escape the hell that was created for them, claim they "voluntarily" chose to leave their land behind and have no right to return.
When Nakba deniers claim that Palestinians "chose" to leave their land, remember this.
Amal's baby daughter, Mariam, has known no childhood outside of surviving this genocide. She will soon be of age to attend school. Last we spoke, she had a very close call during the most recent bombardment. If she wants to give her daughter a chance at normalcy, security, education, and a decent childhood, but those options have been taken away from Gaza, is this voluntary migration?
Mahmoud wants to continue his education. He has been able to scrape by through remote learning online, but every day it becomes harder to even find reliable internet access. Last we spoke, he was trying to pay his fees in time, so that he would be allowed to enroll in this semester. If he wants to pursue his degree, but the conditions in Gaza have made that impossible, is this voluntary migration?
Dr. Anas is a cancer patient. His physical and mental health have been obliterated by this genocide. Last we spoke, he told me that after making some recovery during the ceasefire, he's now back to square one. If he wants to live, to continue his job as a doctor, and to recover from depression, which is impossible to do during bombardment, is this voluntary migration?
Samir is severely injured, and in immediate danger of losing his leg. Last we spoke, his sister told me that the bombardment in their area are more intense than they've ever been. If Samir wants to undergo surgery to save his leg, but there are no such options in Gaza, is this voluntary migration?
Please don't abandon them like our administrations have. They shouldn't have to rely on our generosity, but they must.
Vetting: Amal (#175), Mahmoud, Anas, Samir (#428)
