At the outbreak of the Reformations, the need for stable and authoritative support was acutely fe... more At the outbreak of the Reformations, the need for stable and authoritative support was acutely felt on all sides, engaged as they were in a conflict of interpretations of the core of Christianity. Patristic anthologies were the perfect tool for the roles of polemical weapons and doctrinal handbooks, as they selected apt passages from the Fathers of the Church to prove, explain and promote the articles of the new confessions of faith and testify to antiquity. In a paradigm dominated by the figure of Augustine, whose exegesis of Scripture and understanding of the Gospel was very important for many Reformers, these anthologies tried to demonstrate the broad consensus of the majority of the ancient writers with the doctrines advocated by them.

perfezionamento morale. Tradizione, progresso, riforma: la scelta antologica presentata permette di declinare le linee essenziali del movimento metodista tramite le letture proposte ai suoi predicatori. Il testo
suggerisce un’innovativa interpretazione della traiettoria metodista a partire dall’antologia wesleyana, indagando l’autorappresentazione del suo fondatore, che intende la nascente denominazione come via media, linea mediana fra giustificazione e santificazione, fra “papismo” e protestantesimi. La Library è campo di sperimentazione di questa via media, che armonizza e raccoglie tradizioni diverse e spesso opposte – calvinisti e arminiani, protestanti e cattolici – in uno spirito universalista, ottimista, progressivo. Così, in essa convivono i padri apostolici e lo Ps. Macario d’Egitto, i predicatori puritani e gli accademici platonici di Cambridge, in una sintesi originale e fertile, ancora inesplorata.

Progress is a structural and systematic concept in the thought of Origen of Alexandria, which rep... more Progress is a structural and systematic concept in the thought of Origen of Alexandria, which represents one of the most advanced syntheses of the Christian reading of the Old and the New Testaments’ legacy and the classical paideia, as well as a rational critique towards every kind of static objectification of the religious. Origen’s legacy was capable of radiating its influence through Western theology and philosophy, thus shaping its idea of theological, moral, intellectual, social and political progress. The volume follows the intellectual dynamism generated by the reception of Origen’s thought through seventeen articles, which span through the centuries, from the analysis of Origen’s thought to its reception history in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Modern Age, up until the 20th century.

L’approccio del manuale e quello dell’antologia si compenetrano in un’opera di sintesi aggiornata e documentata, che intende differenziarsi sia dai tradizionali manuali di storia della letteratura cristiana antica o di storia del cristianesimo, sia dalle classiche antologie. Dalle fonti presinottiche a Giustino, dai primi vangeli agli Atti apocrifi, dalle lettere paoline a gnosticismo e montanismo, si dipana un percorso attraverso una fase particolarmente viva e plurale, rispetto alla quale il costituirsi della cosiddetta “proto-ortodossia”, alla fine del II secolo, segnerà un momento di svolta.

H... more One could argue that a mass dedicated to the Virgin of Loreto is an unusual choice for Erasmus. His "Liturgy of the Virgin Mother Venerated at Loreto" ("Virginis Matris apud Lauretum cultae liturgia", 1523, 1525, 1529) would prove such an argument wrong, as this overlooked text reveals much of Erasmus’ theory of "accommodatio", his approach to liturgy and the cult of Mary, and his vision of the church and his spiritual exegesis, even in the midst of the Reformation’s turmoil. This article proposes a close reading of the 1525 edition, which contextualizes Erasmus’ portrait of Mary in her moral values and in the de-eroticization and purification of the medieval, Catholic model, which he re-affirms in the same years in which his controversy with Luther unfolded. Moreover, the sermon presents a rarefied and intellectual variant of the feminine imagery of the bride, which I analyze as being systematically integrated into Erasmus’ theology of progress and ecclesiology.

On March 15, 1530, Erasmus published from his exile in Freiburg im Breisgau De sacramentis corpor... more On March 15, 1530, Erasmus published from his exile in Freiburg im Breisgau De sacramentis corporis et sanguinis Domini, his edition of the treatise by the Benedictine Alger of Liège (d. 1131/2). Erasmus’ preface is his philological and patristic attempt to reposition himself on the crucial matter of the Eucharistic doctrine, in the context of his progressive and increasingly harsh distancing from his erstwhile humanistic associates and friends from Basel, who had turned to the Swiss Reformation. The edition of De sacramento corporis et sanguinis Domini (ca. 1110-5) allows Erasmus to appropriate a moderate, orthodox, and Patristic intervention in the context of the medieval eucharistic controversy, which was particularly violent since the condemnation of Berengarius (d. 1088). Therefore, behind the mask of Alger, Erasmus was fighting the Swiss Reformers, who were styling themselves as modern followers of Berengarius and his symbolic Eucharistic theology. Moreover, through the edition of Alger, Erasmus can show himself as a fervent advocate of the Eucharistic real presence, in an alternative to the more recent and subtle scholastic speculation on the subject, which Erasmus had always opposed as too materialistic. The essay analyzes the theological-political problem posed by the Eucharist, illuminating Erasmus’ late position as a synthesis between ecclesial concord and symbolic-mystical rationalism.

«verbum» della Vulgata in più di quaranta passaggi, sino a comprendere, nel 1519, anche il Prologo del Vangelo di Giovanni. Il saggio ripercorre la decisione erasmiana nei suoi argomenti filologici e patristici, indicandone le profonde conseguenze sul piano personale e della storia degli effetti.

The dialogue presents the commandment of love as the crucial truth of the religion of Christ, revealing an anti-apocalyptic and anti-dogmatic stance. Through the analysis of the text’s sources and philosophical models, the paper shows how Origenian and Spinozian accents intertwine in Lessing’s irenic and universalizing thought.

Se resilienza è capacità di assorbire il cambiamento e affrontare la crisi, la teologia erasmiana... more Se resilienza è capacità di assorbire il cambiamento e affrontare la crisi, la teologia erasmiana rappresenta un esempio importante di ripresa sistematica dello strumento già patristico dell’accomodatio come capacità ermeneutica di individuare un principio di adattamento progressivo e inclusivo di ogni fenomeno della storia dentro un racconto unitario che superi e riassuma in sé crisi e difficoltà interne. Resilienza è dunque la paolina capacità di adattarsi a ogni circostanza, come il camaleonte; la capacità della chiesa di adattarsi ai differenti gradi di comprensione del cristiano; l’abilità chiesta all’interprete che deve navigare la crisi della Chiesa divisa dalle Riforme; l’accomodatio dello Spirito che si adatta alla debolezza dell’uomo, guidando i credenti per stadi successivi che tutti raccolgano e uniscano. Resilienza infine è dote sottile e controversa che appare fra le righe della vicenda umana di Erasmo stesso, principio di contraddizione e sintesi di moti culturali e religiosi del suo tempo.

This article proposes a study of the Commento nelle celesti e divine epistole di San Paulo by Ant... more This article proposes a study of the Commento nelle celesti e divine epistole di San Paulo by Antonio Brucioli, humanist, regular of the Orti Oricellari, translator of Aristotle, Cicero, as well as of the Bible, writer of philosophical, moral, political and religious dialogues, owner of a press in Venice, and later tried for heresy. First, the analysis will focus on selected passages of Brucioli’s commentary of Paul’s epistles to the Romans, so as to highlight the sources used by the author. The practice, broadly used by Brucioli, of paraphrasing or merely copying texts of the Northern Reformers, was already pointed out in his own time by Ambrogio Catarino Politi as well as by historians. This article proposes a study of the motivations behind Brucioli’s choices of sources and his relationship with other contemporary commentaries on Paul’s epistles. Particular attention is given on the reliance – not yet pointed out by the historians – of Brucioli’s Commento on Johann Oecolampadius, the reformer of Basel. Lastly, the article emphasizes the importance for the whole Italian Reformation of the borrowing and copying of text from the European Reformers as a silent medium in the spreading of texts and ideas.

The paper addresses Erasmus’ doctrine of the resurrection of the body in relationship with its Or... more The paper addresses Erasmus’ doctrine of the resurrection of the body in relationship with its Origenian inheritance, its polemical context and the general hermeneutical attitude of Erasmus. The mind-body dualism and the Platonism of Erasmus’ doctrine are better understood in relation to Origen’s Pauline doctrine of the resurrected body. A passage particularly revealing of this Origenian reception, in a mystical direction, is the conclusion of Erasmus’ masterpiece, the Praise of Folly. Through this text, the paper aims to clarify Erasmus’ concept of resurrection as transfiguration, from the letter to the spirit.

The patristic anthology Unio dissidentium as a Reformed source of an anomalous auctoritas
This essay proposes an analysis of the patristic quotations contained in the anonymous booklet Beneficio di Cristo, published in Venice in 1543, now considered the work of the Benedictine monk Benedetto Fontanini and of the humanist Marcantonio Flaminio, a close friend of the Reformer Juan de Valdés. The hypothesis presented here is that the Beneficio relies on the Reformed patristic anthology Unio dissidentium (1527, 1532, etc.), a ‘best-seller’ text assembled by Hermann Bodius (?; maybe Martin Bucer or Johannes Oecolampadius), of whom there are records of ownership by Flaminio. The major proof of the philological dependence is the presence in both texts of a quotation from Origen’s Commentary on Romans (3,3), identically cut and assembled, including the addition of a sentence. The quotation, assembled in this way, enlists Origen as a supporter of justification by faith alone, the battle-cry of the Reformation. The analysis of the other patristic quotations of the Beneficio, often misattributed by modern editions, reveals a broader affinity between Unio and Beneficio, with six common passages of the twelve analyzed in the Beneficio. Even more important is the common attempt of a ‘Catholic’ Reformation, looking for a Concordia Patrum which even includes Origen.

This translation is a useful device for understanding, on the one hand, the polemical intent of the translator, convinced that is necessary to win over the Catholic adversaries on the ground of the Fathers, and on the other, the humanistic effort of the translator, capable of a good, but not brilliant, rendition of a rhetorical and complex
text. Oration 2 is one of the few of Gregory’s orations translated by Musculus: probably the theme, the figure of the good priest, and the evaluation of the situation of the Church, seemed similar to and consonant with Musculus’ vision. Is it still
useful to translate the Fathers for a Protestant scholar? The answer seems to be yes, according to this translation: the high moral standards proposed by Gregory in an elevated manner, the struggle for truth necessary for a good Christian, the pure
doctrine, compatible with Protestant war cries, were all appealing characteristics that deserved the effort of a translation.

In fact, 16th-17th France is an ideal research field for a manifold approach, mindful, on the one hand, of the direct answer of the contemporaries to Erasmus’ controversial presence and production, which divided the field into humanistic and theological parties. On the other hand, his role needs to be explored in the sense of the “richness of creative energies that Erasmus unleashed and the multiplicity of intellectual and moral experiences that found nourishment in his work”, as Silvana Seidel Menchi said for the Italian context (Seidel Menchi 1997, 57). The panel gathers historians of French literature, historians of Christianity, and historians of early modern art to approach the theme from a wide angle, combining the study of material culture, philological and literary analysis, and historical analysis of theological texts.
This mature composition of the queen of Navarre, always close to the more effervescent religious circles, represents a privileged point of view on an author who has proved to be difficult to label into narrow-minded religious categorization. The interplay between the four ladies allows Marguerite to show the slow unveiling of errors and the construction of more accurate definitions of the true faith. This paper proposes an in-depth analysis of the theological positions described in the comedy, often intended only as a defense against Calvin’s accusation of libertinism, directed against the French court. In particular, the paper will investigate the influence of Erasmus’ Origenian ecstatic love as a possible key of the representation.
Guided by the key category of progress and thus highlighting the reception of Origen, the presentation will investigate Erasmus’ understanding of moral progress, exegetical progress, and the progress of the rational mind and soul in key texts of his production, with particular attention to the polemical and confessional context. Through the Encomium Moriae to the Liturgia Virginis Matris ad Lauretum, it will analyze Erasmus' portrait of Christianity as a rational and universal cult, a secularized sobria temulentia, a religion of charity and freedom.

The conference "Origen and the Origenian Tradition on Progress" will take place on May 14-16th 2018 in Rome, University La Sapienza. The Conference will be a joint effort of the University La Sapienza and the ITN Project Marie-Curie “The History of Human Freedom and Dignity in Western Civilization”, gathering distinguished experts and young scholars to broaden our knowledge of the full impact of Origen's reception. The conference will underline the productive power of cultural traditions which had found their stimulus and object in the Origenian speculative inheritance, particularly on the theme of "progress".
Nel corso degli incontri tenuti periodicamente presso il Laboratorio si prenderanno in esame testi risalenti a stagioni diverse della vita e del pensiero di Erasmo, trattati, dialoghi, traduzioni, commenti, componimenti in versi, orazioni, lettere, manuali, prefazioni. A partire da tali opere lo sguardo si allargherà ai contesti interessati dalla multiforme attività dell’umanista di Rotterdam, con una particolare attenzione ai rapporti, complessi e ambivalenti, tra Erasmo e la cultura italiana.
Il Laboratorio ospiterà, pertanto, tre tipologie di incontri: le Letture erasmiane, con le quali si offrirà una lectio analitica di opere, epistolario, attività filologico-editoriale; i seminari metodologici Tradurre e commentare Erasmo, occasione di confronto tra editori, traduttori, studiosi; i Circuiti erasmiani, giornate di studio dedicate ad autori, personaggi ed opere connessi con il rapporto tra Erasmo e la cultura europea, soprattutto italiana.

Michel de Certeau (1986) describes the influence of the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus in Western Christianity as a speculative "haunting," with a strong utopian element that fostered personal and ecclesiastical reforms throughout its extensive reception history. Following Toussaint, Trottmann 2014 Edwards, Pallis, Steiris 2022, this panel aims to investigate the critical early modern phase of this reception, where philological doubts regarding the apostolic origin of the author coexisted with a fruitful engagement with its negative theology, mystical language, and hierarchical system.
