The thin plot is completely predictable but there are some great moments and scenes, especially with the chemistry between Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. I feel like there should be more movies about fathers and daughters.

Sure, you see a lot of rich people doing ridiculous rich people things, but there's a self-awareness to it too. There's something funny about these characters casually eating caviar in a car.

I wish the film didn't end on an emphasis on the husband-wife relationship. Clearly the father-daughter relationship is what we care about!

Adding to my New York list.

I enjoyed this quite a bit...though not as much as I'd expected.

The film overachieves considering it originated as a promotion for The Tokyo Toilet. (Actually, it very much still works in that sense too. The toilets are pretty cool.) Not to be confused with the popular Tora-san comedies. Imagine Boyhood as a documentary and filmed over 22 years instead of 12 years. It's even more incredible than it sounds. This is a little-known film that appears to have been produced for a local Japanese TV network, and it's the best thing I've seen all year.

Tora-san is the patriarch of a family with seven kids, and they start off all living on the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. He…

I put off seeing this despite having heard great things, because—and I'm not proud to admit this—it seemed dull. It's not at all dull; it's captivating in its quiet way. It made me want to travel to Columbus, Indiana someday, a small town I had known nothing about before. I'm not even into Modernist architecture, for which the city is known and is amply put on display in the film.

Oftentimes a film with impeccable formal qualities is something I…
