This documentary felt like it was meant to subvert expectations as a wild life documentary covering bears but the real animal of study being man, Timothy Treadwell. It was a mix of so many documentary techniques like found footage and interviews, but I think it can be summarized into 3 of the 6 styles of documentary, expositional, poetic and participatory. This film is amazing. It is more similar to a video art piece, but it makes clear commentaries between the breaking down of perception with fast editing and colors in comparison to the mind breaking down our bodies. I think the film comments on the ego and how we perceive ourselves often limiting our own capabilities. It is a dismemeberment of our eyes visually forcing us to accept what isn't asthetic as a new asthetic, while also allowing for rythm to guide us. I think it shows how we mentally deteriorate after pain slowly over analyzing aspects of ourselves as represented with physical mutilation.
This film checked all the boxes for me perfectly. The unreliable narrator and then numerous recounts of events and out of order cutting around reminds of some of my favorite films like Pulp Fiction. I think the strongest part of the film is the use of action. Movement is key in this film like Charlie Chapplan with movement in space being the film's most interesting storytelling tool.
