History of Mentalities

This research analyzes the importance of printing in the spread of secular Franciscan way of life in the Iberian Peninsula during the Early Modern Age. Analysing the evolution of print production and its internal characteristics, we see a parallel between the growth of the movement and the rise of publications, from the early 17th century. The 18th century is the height of all that production and the first half of the  nineteenth century, a period of decline. With regard to issues of publications, printed works that predominate are those who talk about the rule and other legal texts, followed by the sermons and funeral prayers, the collections of privileges, the devotional works and the lives of the saints of the order.

Sayar, Ülgener’in bütün vurgularını daha da derinleştirdi ve bunu “Türk töresi” ile biraz esnetti. Oğuz Adanır ile bu yön, ağırlıklı olarak Marcel Mauss etkisiyle potlaç (potlatch, armağan) üzerinden açıklamaya dönüştü.  Üç bilim insanının görüşü, kendi çerçevesinde ve mecrasında tartışılmaya devam ediyor.

Bu çalışma, Hüseyin Rahmi Göktaş’ın Türkçe üzerine düşünmesi ile Murat Önderman’ın Türkiye üzerine düşüncesinden hareketle Türklerin iktisat (dirlik) zihniyeti veya iş zihniyeti çalışmalarına ilk defa dil açısından bir yaklaşımda bulunulmuş oluyor. Ya da Türkçe ilk defa işe koşuluyor.

In this article, we intend to analyse S. Rushdie’s vision of East and West, as it results from his  homonymous short story collection and briefly compare it to  Panait Istrati’s vision of a  closer East and a closer West than those depicted and emphasised by Rushdie, focusing on a limited number of Istrati’s writings. Although the two novelists might seem to have similar experiences, being born in the East and having become famous as writers in the Western world, their viewpoints on these geographical and cultural coordinates are consistently different.

En este artículo se analizan los conceptos de la muerte bajomedieval, humanista y contrarreformista, la difusión de los modelos de muerte a través de los libros y aquellos aspectos de la mentalidad en tormo a la muerte del siglo XVI en Burgos que permanecen inmutables desde la Edad Media y aquellos en los que se perciben cambios.

This article presents the result of research on the perceptions about the
meanings, causes, symptoms and treatments of mental disorders in contemporary Timorese society. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 48 matan-dook – healers, doctors and mediators between the world of the living and the world of the dead by ancestral customs and practices – in the municipalities of Aileu, Ainaro, Dili, Liquiçá, Los Palos, Maliana, Manatuto, Manufahi and Viqueque. In general terms, mental disorders would have a somatic-psychic-spiritual character and would be the consequence of actions perceived as deviant from the socially established norm, constituting a rupture in the conception of harmony and social order.

Este artigo apresenta o resultado da pesquisa acerca das percepções sobre os significados, causas, sintomas e tratamentos dos transtornos mentais na sociedade timorense contemporânea. Para tal, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com 48 matan-dook – curandeiros, médicos e mediadores entre o mundo dos vivos e o dos mortos, de acordo com os costumes e práticas ancestrais – nos municípios de Aileu, Ainaro, Dili, Liquiçá, Los Palos, Maliana, Manatuto, Manufahi e Viqueque. Em termos gerais, os transtornos mentais teriam um carácter somático-psíquico-espiritual, e seriam a consequência de ações percebidas como desviantes da norma socialmente estabelecida, constituindo-se em uma ruptura na concepção de harmonia e ordem social.

While 'the search for the Anglo-Saxon oral poet' has sometimes been characterized as a quest for a chimera (and while sometimes it has been no more than that), there is abundant evidence for the existence of practicing oral poets in the pre-Norman period. Likewise there is evidence that literate Anglo-Saxons themselves cultivated the image of the bard (or Germanic 'scop') in a number of their writings, from Bede to the late tenth century, perhaps in a spirit of nostalgia for the native roots of their culture in a world of simpler ethical imperatives. The idea of oral poetry thus served both the Anglo-Saxons and their Norman successors as a kind of myth, helping to validate a desired social order through glimpses of an imagined past.

La thèse du tabou de la mort s’est imposée en France entre le début
des années 1970 et celui des années 1990. Elle a été portée par un certain
nombre d’acteurs sociaux qui, en la construisant, ont justifié
l’intervention d’acteurs non religieux, dont l’État, dans ce secteur des
derniers instants de l’individu. Cet article voudrait examiner les conditions
qui ont permis à cette thèse du tabou de s’imposer. C’est notamment
parce que le savoir produit se refusait officiellement à soutenir
des entreprises plus militantes, parce qu’il prétendait à son autonomie,
qu’il a pu être utilisé comme une ressource par certains acteurs
du champ religieux, naturalisant en retour la thèse du tabou.

Au XVIII e siècle, des faits divers colportés à travers toute l'Europe paraissent corroborer des récits populaires et des superstitions dont les Balkans sont l'épicentre. Desde la 'inventio' del sepulcro del apóstol, la iglesia de Santiago de Compostela cataliza el desarrollo de la ciudad a lo largo de la Edad Media hasta el punto de que la configuración del núcleo y la evolución de la sociedad y economía urbanas aparecen íntimamente ligadas al devenir de la propia institución. Pero la Iglesia medieval ejerce igualmente su influencia sobre dos aspectos que han dejado buena huella y cuya atención ha de ser obligada en cuanto al principal centro urbano del reino de Galicia: la vida cotidiana y la mentalidad colectiva. Esta monografía no pone el foco en la propia existencia diaria de la institución eclesiástica, ni en hechos ya conocidos, sino en la vida de la ciudad misma durante los siglos medievales, indagando cómo la presencia catedralicia y episcopal, la iglesia compostelana, ha afectado en comportamientos y sectores: la producción libraria, la percepción del entorno, la consideración de las edades de la vida, la relación entre los habitantes y vecinos, vestidos y comidas, la presencia concejil... todo ello tiene su cierto y destacado matiz a través de la presencia eclesiástica. Tomarán aquí la iniciativa el mundo urbano, sus formas y
el pensamiento cotidiano, sobre testimonios que permitan desgranar y conocer la vida del día a día en la ciudad y cómo la influencia eclesiástica ha colaborado o mediatizado la definición de la cotidianidad en la ciudad desde el siglo XII al XV.

Автор рассматривает религиозно-магические практики, непосредственно связанные с использованием имен богов и людей, а также описывает традиции именования и структуру имени в этой культуре, проясняя их специфику через особенности древнеегипетского мировидения.

La diffusion des idées du Sensualisme et la révolution des Lumières, progressivement portent l'homme à prêter attention à soi, à ses propres sensations, à son propre bien-être. L'esprit de la raison met de l'ordre dans les disciplines et fait avancer les connaissances. Le résultat en est que, dans le domaine de l'habitation, par exemple, il y a des progrès technologiques sensibles, comme l'amélioration du tirage des cheminées, l'invention du siphon pour les toilettes entre autres. Il en est de même au niveau du mobilier où beaucoup de nouveautés typologiques et formelles apparaissent. La réponse aux besoins que la recherche d'un confort conscient impose est à la base d'un nouveau rapport avec les objets qui sont au service de l'homme et non pas l'homme au service des objets.

Wie betrachteten Menschen im frühen und hohen Mittelalter ihre eigene Lebenswelt? Welche Vorstellungen hatten sie von ihrer politischen Ordnung, von Völkern, von ihrer Geschichte? Given their cultural, intellectual, and scientific achievements, surely the Greeks were able to approach their economic affairs in a rational manner like modern individuals? Since the nineteenth century, many scholars have argued that premodern people did not behave like modern businesspeople, and that the “stagnation” that characterized the economy prior to the Industrial Revolution can be explained by a prevailing noneconomic mentality throughout premodern (and nonwestern) societies. This view, which simultaneously extols the “sophistication” of the modern West, relegates all other civilizations to the status of economic backwardness.

But the evidence from ancient Athens, which is one of the best-documented societies in the premodern world, tells a very different story: one of progress, innovation, and rational economic strategies. Making Money in Ancient Athens examines in the most comprehensive manner possible the voluminous source material that has survived from Athens in inscriptions, private lawsuit speeches, and the works of philosophers like Aristotle and Plato. Inheritance cases that detail estate composition and investment choices, and maritime trade deals gone wrong, provide unparalleled glimpses into the specific factors that influenced Athenians at the level of the economic decision-making process itself, and the motivations that guided the specific economic transactions attested in the source material. Os  estudos  dedicados  às  representações  de  tempo  na  Idade  Média  foram  um  dos  principais responsáveis pela projeção historiográfica do nome de Jacques Le Goff, uma vez que ocupam um lugar de destaque  em  suas  investigações  sobre  os  imaginários  e  mentalidades  medievais. Este  breve artigo tem por propósito estabelecer algumas reflexões críticas sobre um importante elemento constituinte da  produção de um dos mais  influentes e divulgados medievalistas do século XX e de conhecidas abordagens referentes à constituição histórica do Ocidente. Para tal elaboramos um esboço de revisão historiográfica seguida de um estudo de caso apoiado em fontes documentais do período medieval.

By the fall of the Achaemenids, Greek cultural heirs came to power. However, rather than Hellenistic an antithesis for the Achaemenid thesis, we are confronted with an Eastern-Western synthesis. This article deals with a very new concept in the context of the post-Alexandrian period called "Persianism" or "Achaemenidism". Cruel Oriental despotism, legendary luxury, excessive sexual pleasure, and the enjoyment of innumerable sexual pleasures, is a repetition of the old stereotypes we see in the Roman image of the Iranians. The Romans' perception of the East, especially during the empire era, seems to be more deliberate and ideological than imaginative. At that time, it was necessary for the writers to rewrite the glorious history of Greek history and Greek dialectic between Hellenism and Eastern barbarism. Cicero, the foremost Roman thinker, first, put forward the idea of the separation of East and West and called it the will of the gods. He is to be considered the father of the metaphors of Oriental and Occidental in the history of the mentalities. Using the stereotypes of Augustus, the propagandist machine evolved its discriminatory view of the Oecumenes (civilized world) and introduced Orbis Alius (the alien world) to the humble Orbis Romanus (Roman Empire).
با سقوطِ هخامنشیان، واجدان و وارثان فرهنگِ یونانی به قدرت رسیدند. با این‌حال بیش از آنکه شاهدِ جایگزینی آنتی‌تزِ هلنیستی به جای تزِ هخامنشی باشیم، با یک سنتز شرقی – غربی روبروییم. در این مقاله به مفهومی بسیار تازه‌بنیاد در بسترِ دوره پسااسکندری با عنوان هخامنشی‌مآبی پرداخته می‌شود. استبداد بی‌رحمانه شرقی، تجمل افسانه‌ای، زن‌صفتی و لذت‌های جنسی مفرط با بهره‌گیری از زنان بی‌شمار، تکرارِ کلیشه‌های کهنه‌ای است که در تصویر ارائه‌شدۀ رومیان از ایرانیان می‌بینیم. پرسش این است که انگارۀ رومیان از شرق به ویژه در دورۀ امپراتوری، تعمدی و ایدئولوژیک بود یا تخیلی و سهوی؟ ظاهرا در آن زمان، لازم بود که نویسندگان به بازنویسی تاریخِ شکوهمند گذشتۀ یونان و دیالکتیکِ یونانی - بربرِ شرقی دست بزنند. کیکرون مهمترین اندیشمند روم نخستین بار اندیشۀ جدایی شرق و غرب را مطرح کرده و آن‌را خواستِ خدایان دانست. او را باید پدرِ استعاره‌های اورینس (شرقی) و اوکسیدنس (غربی) در تاریخِ ذهنیت دانست. به نظر می‌رسد دستگاه تبلیغاتی آگوستوس با به‌کارگیری کلیشه‌ها نگاهِ تبعیض‌آمیز خود نسبت به "اوئکومنه" (جهان متمدن) را تکامل بخشید و "اوربیس آلیوس" (جهان بیگانه) ‌را نسبت به "اوربیس رومانوس" (قلمروی روم) پست و خوار معرفی کرد.

The writings of Johann Jakob Ehrler, Francesco Griselini and Johann Kaspar Steube from the second half of the eighteenth century catch a glimpse of the historical transformation of Banat. In these years the authorities took the first steps of modernization. Their notes and writings show the cultural diversity of the empire, but also the difference between Banat and other provinces.

L'éthique des premiers rabbins est-elle une éthique de la modération ? Le modèle d'humanité véhiculé principalement par les Pirké Avot-le Traité des Pères ou, selon une autre acception du titre, le Traité des Principes 1-appartient-il à la famille de l'honnête homme tempéré ou, au contraire, à celle du chevalier enflammé ou du romantique tourmenté par ses passions ? Révélatrice de l'évolution des rapports à la réalité, l'alternance entre l'éthique de l'excès et celle de la modération accompagne les changements profonds de société 2. Au tournant de l'ère chrétienne, le judaïsme substitue à l'inspiration enflammée du prophète biblique et à l'intransigeance du Maître de Justice caractéristique des manuscrits de Qoumrân, la recherche par le rabbin de la « bonne voie » ou de la « voie juste », derekh tova respectivement derekh yeshara. Maïmonide, un millénaire après la rédaction des Pirké Avot, aborde clairement en ce sens dans son Shmone Perakim (Traité des Huit Chapitres) qui constitue le préambule au commentaire de ce traité michnique. Le philosophe prend appui sur les dits tannaïtiques pour étayer son modèle d'humanité en quête du juste milieu 3. Certes, une des sources d'inspiration maïmonidiennes fut la philosophie aristotélicienne 4 récupérée par la filière de la philosophie arabe. Néanmoins, le Traité des Huit Chapitres se veut un commentaire sur un texte donné : serait-il à ce point coupé de sa source antique pour oblitérer complètement son « sens simple » ? Este libro analiza los viajes comerciales de Marco Polo y las representaciones culturales e imaginarias que se construyen sobre Oriente durante la Edad Media. De forma particular, se estudian los objetos materiales, especias y maravillas, como también las representaciones e imágenes que forja la sociedad occidental, las que impulsan la expansión comercial y desarrollan una visión exótica y maravillosa de las tierras, objetos y recursos de Oriente.

What was the reason for the Portuguese royal family to be living in a “hut”? How did this unusual event come about? It was all due to the terrible earthquake of November 1st 1755 from which the royal family escaped, as at the time they were residing at the Belém Royal Country House, nowadays known as the Belém Palace. The Royal family escaped, unharmed, a catastrophe which decimated a large part of the Lisbon Population and left a tremendous impression on Europe at the time. Another fortunate coincidence which benefitted the monarchs was the fact that during the earthquake they were located in one of the least affected areas, where the ground, being of basalt composition, prevented many buildings from collapsing. In light of this, the monarchs decided from there on to take residence in the area of Belém-Ajuda. Terrified by the earthquake, D. José would no longer live in a stone building.
This is the first time that the story of the royal residence between 1756, date of the earthquake, and 1794, when the “Royal Hut” disappeared in a great fire, has been told.

La expedición de los hermanos Nodal al estrecho de Magallanes y Tierra de Fuego (1618-1619) se llevó a cabo en vísperas de la finalización de la Tregua de los Doce Años (1609-1621), entre la República de Holanda y la Monarquía Hispánica para verificar el nuevo paso interoceánico descubierto por la expedición holandesa comandada por Jacob Le Maire y Willem Schouten en 1616. Este artículo pretende realizar un nuevo análisis de esta expedición escasamente tratada por la historiografía para aproximarnos al significado que tuvo en el contexto político de aquel tiempo que gira en torno a una idea: el dominio de los mares. Esta idea se manifestó durante el reinado de Felipe III tanto en el plano material como en el plano ideológico y tuvo sus influjos en la organización de esta expedición marítima. Los logros náuticos y cartográficos de la misma demuestran la capacidad material y el potencial humano de la Monarquía Hispánica a inicios del siglo XVII. Su éxito también se debió a una cooperación ibérica, posible en aquel tiempo en el que las coronas de España y Portugal estaban unidas en un mismo destino.

L'intervalle de temps compris entre la seconde moitié du XIX e siècle et le début du XX e siècle a été une période de l'histoire de l'Europe occidentale marquée par plusieurs changements socio-économiques, comme l'industrialisation, l'expansion urbaine, ou le développement de la division du travail. Tout ça a conduit au lancement d'un mouvement progressif de modernisation non seulement sur le plan technologique, mais aussi dans les mentalités individuelles et collectives, ainsi que dans les visions de la vie. Un tel changement de perception s'est également produit dans le domaine de la féminité et du changement de statut et d'équilibre des forces entre hommes et femmes, annonçant une nouvelle étape d'évolution culturelle et sociale dans l'histoire de l'Europe. Pendant cette période les femmes ont rejeté les notions conventionnelles de féminité précédemment acceptées et elles ont transcendé le territoire de la maternité et de la vie domestique, acquérir ainsi leur indépendance financière et sociale. Cela a marqué l'avancement des femmes modernes dans la sphère publique et l'adoption de formes plus libres d'expression de leur propre identité. Ainsi, de nombreuses femmes ont réussi à faire carrière dans les services publics, dans l'enseignement ou dans les transports. Bien que préfiguré depuis la seconde moitié du XIX e siècle, le début du XX e siècle imposera un concept artistique beaucoup plus progressif de l'idéal féminin, contrairement à l'art du début du XIX e siècle, qui illustrait la notion de féminité idéalisée et servile. On va gagner plus en plus de terrain l'idée que, grace d'une part, à leur qualités innées en ce qui concerne les questions sociales et d'autre part, grâce à l'éducation reçue des mères, les femmes sont plus capables dans la société que les hommes qui ont une éducation plus orientée vers la sphère professionnelle qui ne leur fournit pas suffisamment d'orientation et de connaissances intuitives. En conséquence, il était indiqué aux hommes de faire appel au jugement féminin concernant la vie sociale. Au Banat et en Transylvanie, provinces qui, dans
les dernières décennies du XXe siècle et au début du siècle suivant faisaient partie de l'Empire austro-hongrois, ainsi que dans le reste de l'Europe, bien que les normes sociales continuent de placer les femmes dans un rôle d'inégalité avec les hommes, le modèle de la nouvelle femme libérée de toute contrainte, qui a surgi pendant cette période, a gagné une victoire decisive sur le vieux état d'innocente plénitude et d'asservissement docile.
