En su diálogo titulado De vero bono, Lorenzo Valla cuestiona la admiración de los principios morales paganos por parte de sus contemporáneos. Con este propósito presenta un orador epicúreo que defiende la voluptas en contraposición al elogio estoico de la honestas. En las últimas décadas la crítica ha enfatizado el hecho de que el conocimiento del epicureísmo por parte de Valla era muy limitado al redactar esta obra, y también que su propósito no consistió en defender los postulados de esta escuela filosófica, sino en utilizarlos como un medio para lograr el objetivo de desestimar la importancia de la ética pagana en relación con la vida cristiana. Sin embargo, un análisis de aquellos puntos en los que el De vero bono de hecho se aproxima a las tesis epicúreas y de cómo algunas de las ideas allí presentadas se continúan en sus Dialecticae disputationes y en su Apologia permite observar que existieron aspectos de su obra inspirados en una visión positiva del filósofo de Samos.

Abstract. In his dialogue entitled De vero bono, Lorenzo Valla questions the admiration of pagan moral principles by his contemporaries. For this purpose he presents an Epicurean speaker who defends voluptas as opposed to the stoic praise of honestas. In recent decades critics have emphasized the fact that Valla's knowledge of Epicureanism was very limited when he wrote this work in 1431, and that its purpose was not to defend the principles of this philosophical school, but to use them as a means to achieve his objective of underestimating the importance of pagan ethics in relation to the Christian life. However, an analysis of those points where the De vero bono in fact approaches Epicurean thesis and how some of the ideas presented there are continued in his Dialecticae disputationes and in his Apologia show that there are aspects of his work inspired by a positive view of the philosopher of Samos. The period known as the Italian Renaissance witnessed a rebirth of Greek learning and, along with it, a renewed impetus to translate the two epic poems, the Iliad and Odyssey, attributed to Homer in antiquity. During the course of one century (1362-1460s) there were more than a dozen attempts to translate Homer from Greek into Latin. These Latin versions were the first to be printed in the fifteenth century and in turn offered a template for the first vernacular translations well into the seventeenth century. In addition to translation practice, humanists also began to develop increasingly more sophisticated ways of thinking about the task of the translator and thus did much to advance the field of translation theory. Despite this decisive contribution to the history of Homer's reception and interpretation, critical commentary on the period as a whole has been largely negative. The argument of this dissertation is that much of the scholarship on Homer's reception in the Renaissance is still beholden to aesthetic assumptions inherited from the period in question. Chief among them is the assumption that translation can only take place between two texts (source and target) and that one of the most important features of a good translation is its fidelity to the source text, whether that be in word or sense. Additionally, scholars often expect a translation to stand alone as a piece of literature in its own right. Many humanists of the day and scholars thereafter held Homeric translations up to these standards and judged them a "failure." By applying a historical-contextualist methodology, I put pressure on the "failure thesis" by arguing that there was never any consensus about the standards to which translators ought to hold themselves; these standards changed over time; and in many cases they were simply impossible to fulfill. These translations can be divided into three phases: Literal ("The Feather") (1362-1440s), Oratorical ("The Wing") (1438-1460s), and Verse translation ("The Flight") (1440s-1500).

Die Arbeit beschreibt die humanistische Reform des 'Triviums', d.h. der grammatischen, dialektischen (d.h. logisch-argumentativen) und rhetorischen Ausbildung, wie sie sich in dem Zeitraum von 1480 bis 1540 an Schulen und Universitäten durchsetzte. Die Arbeit ist dabei sowohl historisch wie systematisch angelegt, indem sie die Lehrinhalte der jeweiligen Kunst an ausgewählten Lehrbüchern darstellt, gleichzeitig aber unter ständigem Rückbezug auf die scholastisch-mittelalterliche Tradition die humanistischen Neuerungen davon abgrenzt. Im Zentrum stehen Werke von Lorenzo Valla, Rudolf Agricola, Erasmus, Juan Luis Vives und Philipp Melanchthon. Es stellt sich dabei heraus, dass die humanistischen Neuerungen in erster Linie die Praxisbezogenheit des Triviums betreffen, erst aus dieser ergeben sich dann die inhaltlichen Neuerungen. Unter Praxisbezogenheit ist dabei sowohl die Ableitung von Grammatik, Dialektik und Rhetorik aus der Beobachtung ihrer immer schon vorgängigen Anwendung zu verstehen, als auch ihre Anwendung zum Zweck der sprachlichen, argumentativ-logischen und rhetorischen Analyse. D.h. das grammatische, dialektische und rhetorische Regelwerk wird auf deskriptivem Wege gewonnen, um wiederum in der Analyse auf die Praxis zurückgewendet zu werden. Dieser Analyse werden dabei von alltäglichen Äußerungen, politischen, religiösen oder sonstigen sachlichen Texten bis hin zu literarischen Werken alles unterzogen. In einem letzten Teil stellt die Arbeit drei solcher Analysen vor und versucht sich schließlich selbst an einer dialektisch-rhetorischen Analyse dreier dramatischer Bearbeitungen der Parabel vom verlorenen Sohn.

Η "Κριτική Κειμένου" είναι ο κλάδος της φιλολογικής επιστήμης που μελετά τα κείμενα της αρχαιοελληνικής και λατινικής γραμματείας υπό ένα συγκεκριμένο πρίσμα και με έναν σαφώς προσδιορισμένο στόχο: την αναγωγή των κειμένων αυτών στην αρχική μορφή τους (ή όσο πιο κοντά γίνεται σε αυτήν). Η διαδικασία αυτή της ανασυγκρότησης του κάθε κειμένου συνίσταται σε μια σειρά κριτικές ενέργειες· μελέτη των χειρογράφων, εξέταση της γνησιότητας του κειμένου, διόρθωση σφαλμάτων, εντοπισμός νόθων παρεισφρήσεων.
Το παρόν εγχειρίδιο καλειδοσκοπικά εστιάζει σε συγκεκριμένες πτυχές τεχνικής και λειτουργικής φύσεως της Κριτικής Κειμένου· αφενός παρέχει έναν συγκεντρωτικό κατάλογο, όπου αναγράφονται και ερμηνεύονται οι βασικές συντομογραφίες, οι τεχνικοί όροι και τα λοιπά κριτικά σύμβολα της Κριτικής επιστήμης, και αφετέρου παρουσιάζει δειγματικές αναγνώσεις (με συνοδευτικά επεξηγηματικά σχόλια) για τα τρία είδη υπομνημάτων που παρατίθενται σε κριτικές εκδόσεις κειμένων, δηλ. Υπόμνημα Πηγών, Κριτικό Υπόμνημα και Υπόμνημα Παραλλήλων Χωρίων. Ωσαύτως, στο εγχειρίδιο παρατίθεται μια σύντομη ιστορική ανασκόπηση της Κριτικής Κειμένου (με αναφορές στη στεμματική θεωρία και το στέμμα κωδίκων), καθώς και ενδεικτική περαιτέρω βιβλιογραφία.
Συναφώς, στόχος του εγχειριδίου αυτού είναι να προσφέρει ένα συμπαγές υπόβαθρο από τεχνικές γνώσεις, οι οποίες συνιστούν απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση τόσο για την κατανόηση της διαδικασίας της παράδοσης των κειμένων και του συνακόλουθου πλέγματος διεργασιών της Κριτικής επιστήμης, όσο και για τη σφαιρική προσέγγιση του αρχαίου ελληνικού και λατινικού γραπτού λόγου.
Εν κατακλείδι, το εγχειρίδιο αυτό φιλοδοξεί να καλύψει το έως τώρα βιβλιογραφικό κενό και να καταστεί ένα χρήσιμο εργαλείο έρευνας για φιλολόγους, φοιτητές φιλολογίας αλλά και κάθε είδους μελετητές των αρχαίων κειμένων.

La presente edizione, la prima giustificata da un’ipotesi complessiva e condotta con criteri scientifici, si basa sulla collazione completa dei testimoni, i cui rapporti sono discussi nella Premessa generale e nelle premesse alle singole intercenali, e riproduce l’assetto (sequenza dei libri e sequenza delle intercenali in ciascun libro) del codice P, che conserva, a quanto ne sappiamo, la redazione “ultima” delle Intercenales in quanto “opera”. Per questo motivo i testi che l’autore ha lasciato fuori da questa “forma” dell’“opera” sono stati dislocati nelle due Appendici: la prima è riservata a Defunctus, che ha fatto parte di una “forma” anteriore poi superata, e ad Anuli, pure lei un’intercenale ma viceversa sempre rimasta estravagante; la seconda contiene invece due brevi apologhi (Simie e il frammento <Opinio>) forse destinati al corpus delle Intercenales, non sappiamo però né a quale libro né con quale funzione.
Ogni testo è stato per la prima volta suddiviso in paragrafi che rispondono a scansioni logiche, ma le porzioni di testo sono per lo più brevi, sì da agevolare la talora fittissima triangolazione fra testo, giustificazione filologica e commento. Subito dopo viene l’apparato critico, preceduto però, per la ventina di testi trasmessi in più redazioni, dall’apparato redazionale. Il rinvio è sempre ai paragrafi. I testimoni sono indicati come da prospetto (si veda infra). Le congetture sono sempre firmate.
L’edizione è corredata da un ampio commento, frutto pure questo di ricerche di prima mano, e allestito per rispondere ai seguenti obiettivi: la discussione delle principali congetture proposte e talora anche di quelle respinte; la costante attenzione ai fatti di lingua, sia per ancorare, come si deve, l’ecdotica alla lingua, sia per sperimentare su un capolavoro assoluto un tipo di esegesi purtroppo inconsueta negli studi umanistici, sia per documentare la tesi che «il latino albertiano è una deliziosa insalata; praticamente vi converge ogni fase della latinità, e sia pure con assai diverso peso specifico: arcaica, classica, argentea, tarda, cristiana, e propriamente medievale; né vanno scordati i numerosissimi neologismi» (Cardini, Alberti oggi, p. 67); lo “smontaggio dei testi” sì da consentire la misurazione del tasso di originalità di ciascuno di essi su basi oggettive, il paragone fra punto di partenza e punto di arrivo. Ma non minore attenzione ho riservato all’intertestualità interna, sia perché l’Alberti è uno di quegli autori, che essendosi perennemente riscritto, si presta bene ad essere commentato con se stesso, sia perché ha sempre fatto il canto e il “contro-canto” di ciascuna questione. Sicché se non si tiene ben squadernato dinnanzi l’intero manipolo di testi in cui ha affrontato tematiche consimili (ossia riscritto, ma cambiandole di segno, le stesse “fonti”), il rischio di banalizzarlo o deformarlo è evidente e fortissimo. Ma anche ho avviato alcuni sondaggi strutturali sull’architettura dell’opera e su quella dei singoli libri (un terreno, questo, del tutto vergine), ed ho cercato di individuare e segnalare i generi e gli stili esperiti in un’opera in cui lo sperimentalismo e la varietas, la cifra del secolo, davvero trionfano. La radicata convinzione che filologia e critica sono discipline naturaliter dialogiche, mi ha infine indotto ad apertamente discutere le posizioni degli altri studiosi.

In 1452 Lorenzo Valla finished what became the standard translation of Thucydides for the next several hundred years. Identifying the central themes taken up by Valla in the dedicatory letter to Pope Nicholas V, this article will discuss Valla’s letter, as well as his glosses on the translation, in the context of contemporary translation theory. It will also briefly sketch the sixteenth-century reception of Valla’s translation.

This paper considers the relationship between truth and fiction as it is manifested, through the process of storytelling, within the gallery's aesthetic experience. Storytelling effectively integrates both truth and fiction in order to arouse the imagination in the subject which has a need for fantasy. The meaning of storytelling lays in its establishment of the right to intensity, thus transports man from the aesthetic domain into that of ethics. Storytelling's form of rhetoric, that can adequately propel such movement, departs from the rhetorical work of Aristotle. This hypotheses-based form of rhetoric presents potential truths or things that exist in ambiguousness. Though somewhat illogical, it nonetheless identifies a rational core (the concept of proof) in its structure, with its main purpose to be a (special kind of) persuasion. The kind of potential truth that persists (even with its precarious status of truth-fiction) is aesthetic truth. Aesthetic truth (and therefore knowledge and understanding within art) presents a unique fiction-based process of truth-telling that is a guiding force which transports man towards an imaginary-ethical experience. Thus, within the aesthetic experience, a different kind of knowledge and understanding emerge that include error, precariousness and speculation. This type of knowledge is vital to man's involvement in realm of ethics.

The aim of the program is to take stock of Hungarian documents of
studia humanitatis with 1526 as a milestone. The census intends to register predominantly the use of (school)books in Hungary in teaching grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history, and moral philosophy.

In 1440, the Renaissance scholar Lorenzo Valla completed a detailed study of the Donation of Constantine, widely recognized as both a land-mark in the  field of philology and a significant moment in the history of the Catholic Church. Valla’s text undermined papal claims to political authority and provided reformers with a cultural legitimation for their criticisms of the church. Agostino Steuco’s treatise Contra Laurentium Vallam was the  first extended attempt on the part of Catholic hierarchy to prove Valla and his reformed followers wrong. This largely neglected text can be read to show the political relevance of philology during the period known as Counter-Reformation.

Tra parola, silenzio e verità si gioca una partita triangolare, una partita che in Occidente comincia, o ricomincia, con la modernità – perché l’Occidente è la civiltà dei nuovi inizi, e questo (diciamolo almeno una volta) deve farci ben sperare.

[ITA] Le riflessioni sulla scrittura della storia elaborate alla corte aragonese di Napoli giunsero, alla fine del XV secolo, alla definizione di precise leggi retoriche con l’Actius di Giovanni Pontano, ma presero avvio nel 1447, con una infiammata polemica che vide contrapposti due tra i maggiori umanisti dell’epoca, Lorenzo Valla e Bartolomeo Facio. Quella polemica presentava molti elementi innovativi, sia dal punto di vista della strategia politica, sia da quello schiettamente retorico: la descrizione della contemporaneità e la riorganizzazione della memoria cercavano legittimazione attraverso una inedita regolamentazione professionale dell’analisi delle fonti e della forma retorica, per la quale non esistevano nell’Antichità latina modelli teorici specifici, adattati, invece, dall’oratoria giudiziaria. Insomma, la connessione tra descrizione della contemporaneità, riflessione retorica, esigenza di celebrazione e legittimazione della maestà regia trovò alla corte di Napoli un campo assai fecondo. Fu lì che trovò privilegiato spazio quel disciplinamento della scrittura storica che, ampiamente retribuita, portò al suo riconoscimento professionale e, successivamente, alla definizione di un preciso disciplinamento di argomenti, di forme e di metodi.

[ENG] At the end of the fifteenth century, in the Aragonese court of Naples, the reflections about the writing of history produced precise rhetorical laws, summarized in the Actius by Giovanni Pontano, but those reflections started up in 1447, with an inflamed controversy among two of the most important humanists of that time: Lorenzo Valla and Bartolomeo Facio. That controversy presented many innovative elements in the invention of political strategies and in the definition of rhetorical rules: the description of contemporaneity and the reorganization of memory found legitimacy through a new professional attention to the analysis of sources and to the use of rhetorical form. About these problems, latin antiquity did not offer specific theoretical models, which were instead adapted from the judicial oratory. In short, the connection between the description of the contemporary, the rhetorical reflection, the need to celebrate and legitimate the royal majesty found a very fertile field in the court of Naples. The discipline of historical writing found there a privileged space: there the historians were well paid, there they were professionally recognized and, subsequently, there they invented a precise regulation of arguments, forms and methods in the historical writing.

In meiner Masterarbeit, 2016 eingereicht am Institut für Christliche Philosophie der Universität Innsbruck, beschäftige ich mit Fragen der Sprachphilosophie und der Philosophie des Geistes (insbesondere mit dem Problem der Intentionalität), die sich im Anschluss an spätmittelalterliche Debatten unter besonderer Berücksichtigung Cusanus' Schrift "Idiota de mente" ergeben. Nicolaus Cusanus (1401-1464) im Allgemeinen und seine Schrift "Idiota de mente" im Besonderen stellen sich unter diesen Fragestellungen als besonders ergiebiger Bezugspunkt der drei Hauptströmungen der spätmittelalterlichen Sprachphilosophie (Scholastik, Mystizismus, Renaissance-Pragmatismus) heraus, der in neueren Forschungen zur Philosophie des Spätmittelalters beinahe völlig übersehen wurde.
Im ersten Abschnitt (1) gebe ich einen kurzen geistesgeschichtlichen Überblick über das 15. Jahrhundert und einen kurzen biographischen Abriss. Der zweite Abschnitt (2) stellt die drei Hauptströmungen in der spätmittelalterlichen Philosophie zum Problem der Intentionalität gegenüber und versucht deren Einordnung im Cusanischen Denken. Der dritte Abschnitt (3) bietet eine philologisch wie philosophisch möglichst genaue Rekonstruktion der wichtigsten Argumente in der in Dialogform verfassten Schrift "Idiota de mente". Diese sollen schließlich im Hinblick auf die im zweiten Abschnitt aufgeworfenen Fragestellungen diskutiert werden. Im Schlusskapitel (4) ziehe ich kurz Schlussfolgerungen und versuche die philosophiehistorische Bedeutung von Cusanus' Konzeption abzuschätzen, die sich bis in die Sprachphilosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts verfolgen lässt.

In my master thesis, submitted to the Department of Christian Philosophy at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) in 2016, I discuss problems in the philosophy of mind and philosophy of language (mainly the problem of intentionality) in late medieval philosophy, based on Nicholas of Cusa's work "Idiota de mente". Generally, Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) - and "Idiota de mente" written in dialogue-form in particular - turns out to be a complex bundling of three major tendencies in the late medieval debate on intentionality (scholasticism, mysticism, renaissance pragmatism) and - surprisingly - almost overlooked in recent studies on this issue.
In the first section (1), I present the historical background for Nicholas of Cusa in the 15th century. The second section (2) discusses the three main tendencies in the debate on problems of intentionality in late medieval philosophy and its treatment by Nicholas of Cusa. The third section (3) provides a detailed examination of "Idiota de mente" by reconstructing approaches to the issues risen in the former section. The last section (4) gives a short conclusion of the results and a historical classification of Cusanus’ approach traceable up to the philosophy of language in the 20th century.

El propósito de este trabajo es doble. En primer lugar, presenta algunos de los debates actuales en los estudios del humanismo renacentista a partir de las propuestas de Ernesto Grassi, principalmente en su Rhetoric as Philosophy. The Humanist Tradition (1980), Cristopher Celenza en su The Lost Italian Renaissance. Humanists, Historians, and Latin’s Legacy (2004) y de Rocco Rubini en su The Other Renaissance: Italian Humanism between Hegel and Heidegger (2014). En segundo lugar, se propone señalar la forma en la que algunos elementos de la teoría de los medios tal como surge de las concepciones de Marshall McLuhan (él mismo un estudioso del Renacimiento) pueden iluminar cómo los humanistas del Renacimiento concibieron el efecto del latín clásico en la cultura. Con este propósito se analizan algunas de las declaraciones de Lorenzo Valla acerca de esta temática. A partir de este recorrido, aspiramos a mostrar que algunas de las encrucijadas señaladas por Grassi, Rubini y Celenza pueden encararse productivamente a partir de los aportes de la teoría de medios.

This is the Introduction to my book on Giovanni Pontano. It discusses how Pontano connects to Aristotelianism, and why I think it is worthwhile to study his virtue ethics, and Renaissance virtue ethics in general. You will also find the argument of the book.

This paper is devoted to the first period of Pomponio's career, from the 1450s to 1468, which is relatively little known. A fresh examination of the subscription in his copy of Lucretius produces new evidence. He is shown to have been seeking patronage from Pius II and/or Ferdinand I of Naples. But at some point after 1459, though he originally came from southern Italy, it became convenient to make himself out to be Roman. The three sources that he used when transcribing Lucretius are examined and there is detailed discussion of the part that may have been played in the textual study of Lucretius by Valla and Pietro Odo da Montopoli, whose annotated copy of Lucretius (Milan, Bibl. Ambrosiana, E 125 sup.) is identified here. Pomponio's knowledge of the 'Roma'/' 'Rhoma' debate is examined. It is argued that what later became known as the Pomponian (or Roman Academy) initially styled itself "humanissimi viri Laurentiani" in homage to Valla.

The analysis is directed at grammars used in 15th century Hungary. In this period, there were marked changes in the area of available grammars: besides the antique–late antique grammars (Donatus and Priscian) and then medieval grammars and vocabularies, first in Italy and later beyond the Alps too gradually new grammatical-rhetorical works meeting Renaissance and Humanist ideals started to appear (Guarino Veronese, Lorenzo Valla, Niccolò Perotti, Giovanni Sulpizio, Antonio Mancinelli, etc.).

Il "De papatu Romano Antichristo" di Alberico Gentili (San Ginesio 1552 – Londra 1608) è conservato nella Bodleian Library di Oxford (D’Orville 607, ff. 1r-95v) e rappresenta il più noto degli inediti del giurista di San Ginesio al quale, soprattutto a partire dal secolo scorso, gli studiosi hanno dedicato particolare attenzione. Nuove indagini sul manoscritto hanno dimostrato che, pur essendo stato originariamente redatto fra il 1580 e il 1585, quel testo era stato rivisto, corretto e integrato dallo stesso Gentili. Correzioni, aggiunte, appunti scritti dall’Autore almeno fino al 1591: una novità deducibile dalla lettura di alcuni appunti autografi vergati in uno dei primi fogli del manoscritto bodleiano – fogli originariamente destinati a restare bianchi – ove si fa rinvio, più volte, al "Tractatus criminalis" di Tiberio Deciani la cui "editio princeps" risale al 1590.

Per tentare di comprendere pienamente l’entità e la natura sostanziale di queste modifiche e annotazioni, e le ragioni per le quali il Gentili non giunse mai alla determinazione di completare e successivamente pubblicare il lavoro, occorreva tornare a studiare criticamente la fonte manoscritta nella sua interezza, ma soprattutto predisporne l’edizione critica: un evento sempre auspicato ma mai, fino ad ora, realizzato.

Il progetto, dopo oltre sei anni di intenso lavoro da parte di Giovanni Minnucci che, nel corso di questo lungo periodo, ha dato periodicamente conto dei risultati progressivamente raggiunti, è stato finalmente portato a compimento.

Composta di 24 "Assertiones", attraverso le quali l’A. intese dimostrare che l’Anticristo era da identificare nel Papato Romano, l’opera è corredata da un numero copiosissimo di allegazioni tratte dalla Sacra Scrittura, dalle opere dei Padri della Chiesa, da quelle teologiche, storiche, filosofiche, letterarie e giuridiche, individuate dal curatore, a pié di pagina, in un apposito apparato critico. In un secondo apparato, sempre a pié di pagina, vengono edite anche le numerose "additiones" che Gentili vergò nei margini e, talvolta, nelle interlinee del testo. Segue un’  "Appendice" nella quale si legge il testo, criticamente edito, degli appunti di lavoro che Gentili annotò nel frontespizio e nei fogli del manoscritto inizialmente destinati a restare bianchi.

In ragione della particolare natura del testo – un vero e proprio work in progress che Alberico Gentili non aveva mai concluso – l’edizione critica del De papatu Romano Antichristo, delle numerose additiones e dei cospicui appunti sparsi che ne caratterizzavano la stesura, era meritevole di essere accompagnata da un saggio introduttivo. Per una migliore comprensione dell’opera, e per una sua più compiuta, ancorché preliminare, illustrazione, Giovanni Minnucci ha ritenuto necessario soffermarsi sulle presumibili ragioni sottese alla decisione assunta da Gentili di voler affrontare il tema oggetto del suo lavoro e sulle fonti complessivamente utilizzate – avendo riguardo anche a quelle prive di esplicito rinvio – cercando di approfondire, allo stesso tempo, la natura delle additiones vergate nei margini e nelle interlinee, e le probabili motivazioni della sua mancata pubblicazione. Né potevano essere ignorate, infine, in ragione dei contenuti eminentemente teologici e giuridici dell’inedito, le idee che, in relazione ai rapporti fra diritto e teologia e fra coloro che quelle discipline professavano, il nostro Autore aveva espresso negli anni ai quali va fatta risalire la conclusione della prima redazione dell’opera e a quelli immediatamente seguenti, allorquando decideva di aggiornarla e modificarla. In questo periodo, com’è noto, si concretizzarono i prodromi di un vero e proprio scontro teorico, di natura politico-dottrinale, con i puritani inglesi e, più in particolare, con il teologo John Rainolds. Queste vicende, già note alla storiografia, erano suscettibili non solo di essere ripensate e approfondite alla luce della documentazione manoscritta che le attesta, ma anche nuovamente contestualizzate: proprio mentre la polemica iniziava ad accendersi per poi successivamente esplodere all’inizio degli anni Novanta del XVI secolo, Alberico stava attendendo alla scrittura e alla successiva revisione del De papatu. Temi e problemi già oggetto di studio da parte di Minnucci, che vengono qui ripresi, integrati, approfonditi e notevolmente ampliati nei Prolegomena che precedono l’edizione.

Giunto ad uno stadio avanzato di elaborazione, il De papatu Romano Antichristo attesta i forti dissensi che caratterizzarono la vicenda politica e religiosa europea in uno dei momenti più bui della sua storia millenaria, ed è contestualmente testimone della vastissima cultura e della poliedrica attività scientifica del grande giurista e pensatore italiano, esule in Inghilterra sin dal 1580 per la sua adesione alla Riforma, e regius professor di civil law a Oxford dal 1587.

The aim of the book is to take stock of Hungarian documents of
studia humanitatis, with 1526 as a milestone. The census intends to register predominantly the use of (school)books in Hungary in teaching grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history, and moral philosophy.

This article analyses Valla’s historiographical stance in the light of his dialectical assumptions about possibility, verisimilitude, and truth. I argue that, at variance with most humanists, Valla believed that historical truth should satisfy the requirements of logical necessity, being therefore incompatible with verisimilar reconstructions of past events. However, Valla also realized that a critical method of assessment grounded in verisimilitude was indispensable to the analysis of doubtful accounts and traditions. In order to explore these matters, Valla developed a genre distinct from history proper and closer to the forensic, inquisitorial tradition. While history had to deal with necessary truths, the aim of ‘historical inquisitio’ was to draw probable conclusions from pieces of conjectural evidence. According to Valla’s dialectical principles, these conclusions were not absolutely true, but they could be considered true thanks to the notion of intellectual acumen, which allowed Valla to take a leap from the field of possibility or verisimilitude to that of truth and necessity.

This article analyses the influence of Lorenzo Valla’s philosophy on his own grammatical conceptions. In particular, I argue that, in spite of the anti-normative claims of the Elegantiae, Valla’s philosophical assumptions led him to adopt normative and prescriptive stances that were harshly criticized by Bartolomeo Facio and Poggio Bracciolini. In light of an analysis of Valla’s polemics and of his grammatical works, I suggest that the contrast between anti-normative and normative traits in Valla’s grammar largely depends on whether the Elegantiae are considered from the perspective of their conception – with regard to classical Latin – or from the point of view of their reception – with regard to Humanist Latin.
