Oriental Orthodox Christianities

In the course of this work, we will discuss a number of cases and examples related to the monk-king ideal, within the history of Ethiopia in the Middle Ages. Firstly, we will start by introducing the development of the monastic movement, outlining the tight linkage between the monastic institution and the kingship. Subsequently, we will carefully analyze the role of the Gadl – Ethiopian hagiography – within the context of this period of time, pointing out the relevance these hagiographies for the reconstruction of the history of Medieval Ethiopia. By considering these factors, I will present the most relevant “monk-kings” that assisted us to discuss and analyze this ideal.

From 1931 until 2016, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia made several attempts at establishing a missionary presence in India, initially at the behest of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, who sought union with them and the wider Orthodox Church.

Using archival and biographical sources, this paper provides a broad overview of the different phases of the missionary work, the personalities involved, and the varying approaches of the ROCOR Synod.

A recently edited metric homily (mimro) by the Miaphysite Syriac author Jacob of Serugh (452-521) sheds light on how a late antique author conceived of the link between saints and cult buildings-whether martyrion or churchdedicated to them.1 At a time, in 503, when the Persian army was occupying the stronghold of Amida (modern Diyarbakır in SouthEast Turkey) and was in turn surrounded by the Roman armies trying to win the city back, the mimro tells of a unique example of a church turned into a fire-temple.2 Concentrating on the fate of the building that passed into the hands of the Zoroastrian Persians, the author tries to make sense of the politico-religious meaning of that particular event for the defeated Christians. This fieldwork focused on exploring local men's, women's and clergy's perceptions and understandings of spousal abuse in juxtaposition to: a) theology-informed analysis of Church teachings concerning the metaphysics of gender relations, marriage and spousal abuse, and b) an analysis of culture-specific gender ideals and norms. This research has been motivated by the aim to identify local mechanisms and resources for changing attitudes that sustain spousal abuse and, especially, the relevance and feasibility of theology-informed and clergy-centred solutions. Ms Istratii presents here an overview of the project and fieldwork, contextualising it in the relevant literatures and the rationale for its epistemological and methodological innovations. While early to reach any conclusions, some research findings are delineated in ways that suggest intricate, multifarious realities on the ground and the need for multidimensional approaches to normative change.

This presentation was given at the "Religions and Development: Redrawing a Research Agenda" workshop, organised at SOAS on 29 April 2016. The workshop aimed to examine recent progress in the field of Religions and Development and to identify emerging issues and research needs. The specific presentation provided an overview of Ms Istratii's on-going study of conjugal abuse among the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwahәdo community in Aksum, Tigray. The project aims to consolidate an epistemology-sensitive gender and development science that can contribute to a better understanding of domestic violence cross-culturally.

Tożsamość narodowa na Bliskim Wschodzie zaczęła kształtować się stosun-kowo niedawno. O ile w Europie okresem kształtującym narodowości była zasad-niczo Wiosna Ludów, o tyle na Bliskim Wschodzie zaczęły się one kształtować od tzw. arabskiego odrodzenia (an-nahda al-arabija). Udział Libańczyków w tym ruchu, w tym Kościoła maronickiego jako głównego reprezentanta, jest nie do przecenienia. Można z całą pewnością stwierdzić, że bez chrześcijan Orientu nie byłoby arabskiego odrodzenia, w tym odrodzenia współczesnego języka arabskiego. Okres an-nahdy to czas od kampanii napoleońskiej w 1798 r. do upadku impe-rium osmańskiego w 1920 r. Pierwsza data wyznacza kontakty, a raczej starcie Zachodu ze Wschodem na płaszczyźnie militarnej, naukowej i kulturowej. Konflikt można by streścić w jednej kwestii: dlaczego Wschód opanował regres, a Zachód parł w postępie do przodu? Wskutek badań nad tą kwestią pod kątem religijnym, poli-tycznym i ekonomicznym, kręgi wykształcone na Bliskim Wschodzie, do których nale-żeli głównie chrześcijanie, rozważały jak wyjść z zacofania i upadku oraz doprowa-dzić do odrodzenia świata arabskojęzycznego. Druga data wyznacza początek zmagań kształtujących się państw arabskich oraz autochtonicznych społeczności Bliskiego Wschodu z europejską kolonizacją, zarówno istniejącą jawnie (kolonia), jak i w sposób ukryty (mandat lub protektorat). W ciągu XVI i XVII w. Turcy opanowali kraje arabskie rządząc w nich aż do początku XX w. Choć sułtanat osmański w okresie między XIV a końcem XVII w. był silnym państwem, wzbudzającym lęk w Europie i nazywanym " osmańską błyska-wicą " , stał się niebawem " chorym człowiekiem Europy " , a z tej racji obiektem tzw. kwestii wschodniej (La question d'Orient 1), która ogniskowała się wokół jednego zasadniczego pytania: jakie państwo lub państwa odziedziczą to bogate, olbrzymie imperium, wypełniając po nim pustkę? Jednym z nich stał się odrodzony Liban. Zanim jednak do tego doszło, warto przyjrzeć się roli kulturowej i politycznej, jaką odegrali Maronici 2 na Bliskim Wschodzie. 1 Za terminem tym kryła się infiltracja upadającego imperium osmańskiego przez europejskie rządy, która dokonywała się także za pośrednictwem misji. 2 Termin " Maronici " można pisać wielką literą, ze względu na narodowość, lub małą, ze względu na wyznanie. 209

In the New Testament the term koinônia denotes Christ’s sharing in our flesh and blood as well as the communion/fellowship among the members of the community because of the communion that we have with Christ, and with his Father. In the Pauline letters the phrases “in Christ,” “in the Spirit,” “one body” are used to signify the abolition of the barriers ans obstacles to communion. In the early Fathers we find an emphasis on the link between doctrine and communion as well as an emphasis on the unity of the community often centered on the bishop. In the Latin Fathers the question of doctrine is connected with the links with the apostolic churches and the unity among the bishops themselves is stressed. The Trinity itself is put forth by several fathers as a model of the unity that should exist in the church. Augustine stresses above all the unity of the Body of Christ and the connection of that unity with the Eucharist. A similar emphasis is found in John Chrysostom. Finally with Basil we find the relations within the Trinity described as a communion (koinônia), which in turn becomes the model for the communion within the church.

The Oriental Churches, despite what it was kept piling up them by their adventurous history, constitute even today the living witness and the immediate continuity of the ancient Christian tradition. In the modern era a new phase in the relations between the Orthodox Church and the Oriental seems to begin, especially after the profound development of "Ecclesiology" and the Ecumenical Movement. It is recognized as an important fact, that the same genuine orthodox Christological faith was preserved in both traditions despite the different theological terminology. Apart from the dominant Christological issue, a great variety of ecclesiological, liturgical, and pastoral issues preoccupied the official theological dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches. Οι Αρχαίες Εκκλησίες της Ανατολής αποτελούν ακόμη και στις μέρες μας τη ζωντανή μαρτυρία και την άμεση συνέχεια της αρχαίας χριστιανικής παράδοσης. Πρόκειται κυρίως για τις Εκκλησίες που δεν αποδέχθηκαν το χριστολογικό δόγμα της Δ΄ Οικουμενικής Συνόδου της Χαλκηδόνας (451) και διαμόρφωσαν την ιδιαίτερη πορεία τους ως τις μέρες μας με βάση τις τρεις πρώτες Οικουμενικές Συνόδους. Ήδη από τον 5ο αι. αλλεπάλληλες ήσαν οι προσπάθειες υπέρβασής του τόσο από τους βυζαντινούς αυτοκράτορες όσο και από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Μολονότι μεσολάβησε η αραβική κατάκτηση και κατόπιν η Τουρκοκρατία τα ορθόδοξα πατριαρχεία της Ανατολής ποτέ δεν έπαψαν να έχουν σποραδικές ενωτικές διαπραγματεύσεις και να προβαίνουν σε φιλικές επαφές με τις Αρχαίες Ανατολικές Εκκλησίες. Μια νέα εποχή στις σχέσεις της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας με τις Αρχαίες Ανατολικές Εκκλησίες φαίνεται να ξεκινά στα νεώτερα χρόνια, ύστερα μάλιστα και από την έντονη ανάπτυξη της «Εκκλησιολογίας» και της Οικουμενικής Κίνησης. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι στο γενικότερο κλίμα οικουμενικού διαλόγου και επικοινωνίας με τις άλλες χριστιανικές Εκκλησίες η Ορθοδοξία κατά τον 20ο αι. προκρίνει τη δημιουργία σχέσεων, θεολογικού διαλόγου και πορείας  προς την ένωση  με τις Αρχαίες Ανατολικές Εκκλησίες, οι οποίες θεωρείται ότι βρίσκονται πλησιέστερα προς την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία από τις άλλες χριστιανικές Εκκλησίες. Δεκαπέντε αιώνες αμοιβαίας καχυποψίας και εχθρότητας έδωσαν τη θέση σε μια νέα περίοδο σχέσεων. Ήδη από τις πρώτες ανεπίσημες συζητήσεις μεταξύ Ορθοδόξων και Ανατολικών κατεβλήθη προσπάθεια να διευκρινιστούν οι θεολογικές παραδόσεις των δύο πλευρών ως προς το χριστολογικό δόγμα, το οποίο αποτέλεσε και την μοναδική αιτία της εκκλησιαστικής αυτής διαίρεσης. Είναι σημαντικό ότι αναγνωρίζεται πως η ίδια αυθεντική ορθόδοξη χριστολογική πίστη διατηρήθηκε και στις δύο παραδόσεις, αν και εκφράστηκε με διαφορετική θεολογική ορολογία. Η διαφορετική αυτή έκφραση στη δογματική ορολογία έγινε, όμως, στο πλαίσιο της αδιάκοπης συνέχειας της αποστολικής παράδοσης και από τις δύο πλευρές. Έτσι, αντί να καταδικάζει η μία πλευρά την άλλη, οι εκφράσεις και των δύο παραδόσεων σε μια αρμονική εκδοχή μπορούν να δώσουν δυνατότερη περιγραφή του μυστηρίου της ενανθρώπησης. Συνεπώς, για τους Μη-Χαλκηδονίους είναι πλέον σαφές ότι «στη μία σεσαρκωμένη φύση του Λόγου οι δύο φύσεις συνέχισαν να υφίστανται». Πέρα από το κυρίαρχο χριστολογικό ζήτημα τον διάλογο της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας με τις Αρχαίες Ανατολικές Εκκλησίες απασχόλησε και μία σειρά από εκκλησιολογικά, λειτουργικά και ποιμαντικά ζητήματα. Αν, λοιπόν, αναγνωρίζεται ότι η βάση της ενότητας και της κοινωνίας μεταξύ Ορθοδόξων και Ανατολικών Εκκλησιών είναι η συνεχής πιστότητα στην αποστολική παράδοση, σύμφωνα με την κοινή εκκλησιολογική αντίληψη, η ενότητα αυτή δεν μπορεί να περιορίζεται μόνο σε ομολογιακές συμφωνίες στο χριστολογικό δόγμα. Ωστόσο, κανένα βήμα δεν έγινε ακόμη προς την κατεύθυνση της άρσης των αναθεμάτων και της αποκατάστασης της μυστηριακής κοινωνίας. Ενδεχομένως, τούτο να οφείλεται σε ορισμένες εκκρεμότητες του ίδιου του θεολογικού διαλόγου ή ακόμη στην ψυχολογική και γεωγραφική αποξένωση των δύο οικογενειών Εκκλησιών ή ακόμη σε συντηρητικές και ιδεολογικές αντιδράσεις ορισμένων στοιχείων εκατέρωθεν. Προς την κατεύθυνση αυτή οι δύο οικογένειες Εκκλησιών οφείλουν να προχωρήσουν στην οικοδόμηση της ενότητας με υπομονή και επιμονή, ώστε να αποφευχθεί οποιαδήποτε φονταμενταλιστική εκδήλωση και συνάμα να αποκλεισθεί κάθε είδος δογματικού μινιμαλισμού. Οποιαδήποτε τάση παραθεώρησης των βιβλικών, πατερικών, εκκλησιολογικών, λειτουργικών και κανονικών πλαισίων και συνάμα η ζηλωτική εμμονή στις πολεμικές αγκυλώσεις του παρελθόντος, αλλά και η ομολογιακού τύπου πρόσδεση σε ένα είδος ιδεολογικής ορθοδοξίας του γράμματος και μιας εκκλησιολογικής «καθαρεύουσας» που δεν ενδιαφέρεται για την αποκατάσταση της ενότητας μεταξύ των διηρημένων χριστιανών, μπορεί να ακυρώσει στην πράξη όλη την πρόοδο και τη δυναμική του διαλόγου.

A mediaeval Latin manuscript has preserved the Passion of a fifth-century Persian martyr, Vamnes, who is totally unknown in the hagiographic and liturgical sources of the various Oriental Christian communities.  In determining the historical value of the text we show the probability of an underlying Syriac original which had probably been translated into Greek before being translated into Latin.
