Rizal's Novels:

Noli Me Tangere

El Filibusterismo
Noli me
tangere
Title: Noli me Tangere
The title, in Latin meaning, touch me not,
refers to john 20:17 in the bible ( king james
version) as mary Magdalene tried to touch
the newly risen jesus, he said “ touch me
not; for I am not yet ascended to my
father”. It also refers to a particular type of
cancer.
Noli Me Tángere, is an 1887 novel by José Rizal during the
colonization of the Philippines by Spain to describe
perceived inequities of the Spanish Catholic friars and the
ruling government

Early English translations of the novel used titles like An Eagle

Flight (1900) and The Social Cancer (1912), disregarding the
symbolism of the title, but the more recent translations were
published using the original Latin title. It has also been noted
bythe Austro-Hungarian writer Ferdinand Blumentritt that "Noli Me
Tángere" was a name used by local Filipinos for cancer of the
eyelids; that as an ophthalmologist himself Rizal was influencedby
this fact is suggested in the novel's dedication, "To My fatherland
Background
After reading Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher
Stowe, Jose Rizal had the idea to write a book that
would reveal the flaws in Philippine culture.
Jose rizal preferred that the prospective novel expresses
the backward , anti-progress and anti-intellectual way
filipino culture was.
Background
On 2 January 1884 in Madrid, Rizal proposed the writing
of a novel about the Philippines written by a group of
Filipinos. His proposal was unanimously approved by the
Filipinos present at the time, among whom were Pedro,
Maximino Viola and Antonio Paterno, Graciano López
Jaena, Evaristo Aguirre, Eduardo de Lete, Julio Llorente
and Valentin Ventura.
Almost everybody wants to write about women.
History on Publication

Jose Rizal finished the novel
He feared that it might not be printed and would remain unread.
struggling with financial constraints at the time
Maximo Viola lend Jose Rizal Php 300 for 2,000 copies.

March 1887
Rizal had sent a copy of the novel to his friend, Blumentritt

1899
The first Philippine edition (and the second published edition) was
finally printed in 1899 in Manila by Chofre y Compania in Escolta.
Influence on Filipino Nationalism
After publication, Noli me Tangere was considered to be
one of the instruments that initiated Filipino nationalism
leading to the 1896 Philippine Revolution. The novel did not
only awaken sleeping Filipino awareness, but also
established the grounds for aspiring to independence.
Noli Me Tangere gave us power, it was the seed that gave
us the idea to stop being ignorant and it aroused our
need for independency and freedom. Rizal's writing was
created to fuel the growing nationalism that will help the
Filipinos break free from the shackles of abuse.
Influence on Filipino Nationalism
Rizal portrayed nationality by highlighting the good traits
of Filipinos, such as a Filipina's loyalty and her impact on a
man's life, their profound feeling of appreciation, and
their strong common sense under the Spanish rule.

Two characters in particular have become classics in

Filipino culture: María Clara, who has become a
personification of the ideal Filipino woman, and the priest
Father Dámaso, who reflects the covert fathering of
illegitimate children by members of the Spanish clergy.
Influence on Filipino Nationalism

In 1956, Congress passed Republic Act 1425, more

popularly known as the Rizal Law, which requires all
levels in Philippine schools to teach the novel as part of
their curriculum. Noli me tangere is being taught to third
year secondary school (now Grade 9, due to the new K-
12 curriculum) students, while its sequel El filibusterismo
is being taught for fourth year secondary school (now
Grade 10) students.

EL
FILIBUSTERISMO
Meaning of El Filibusterismo
El filibusterismo translates to "The filibusterism",
"The Subversive" or "The Subversion"
also known by its alternative English title "The
Reign of Greed"
the second novel written by Jose Rizal.
the sequel to Noli Me Tángere
first published in 1891 in Ghent, Belgium.
Background
The novel centers on the Noli-El fili duology's main
character Crisóstomo Ibarra, now returning for
vengeance as "Simoun".
The novel's dark theme departs dramatically from
the previous novel's hopeful and romantic
atmosphere, signifying Ibarra's resort to solving his
country's issues through violent means, after his
previous attempt in reforming the country's system
made no effect and seemed impossible with the
corrupt attitude of the Spaniards toward the
Filipinos.
Background

Rizal dedicated el filibusterismo to the 3 martyred

priests of cavite mutiny who was executed and
became a significant to the title of the novel.
History on Publication
Rizal took 3 years to write his second novel
He began writing it on October 1887 while he was in
Calamba
In London, 1888, he revised the plot and some chapters.
he continued to work on his manuscript in Paris
He later moved to Brussels where the cost of living was
cheaper and he would be less likely to be distracted
by social events so he could focus on finishing the
book
History on Publication
He finally completed the book on March 29, 1891 in
Biarritz
September 18,1891-the book was published in ghent
partially funded by Rizal’s friend Valentin Ventura.
Rizal immediately sent on this date two printed copies
to Hong kong, one for Basa and one for Sixto lopez
Rizal gratefully donated the original manuscript and an
autographed printed copy to Valentin Ventura
Rizal sent copies to Blumentritt and other friends
History on Publication
The novel, along with its predecessor, was banned in some
parts of the Philippines as a result of their portrayals of the
Spanish government's abuses and corruption.
These novels, along with Rizal's involvement in organizations
that aimed to address and reform the Spanish system and
its issues, led to Rizal's exile to Dapitan and eventual
execution.
Both the novel and its predecessor, along with Rizal's last
poem, are now considered Rizal's literary masterpieces.
